Sheet For Brains!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “Pong” and “Doom” are the first games to enter the ‘Video Game Hall of Fame’, chosen for their influence, longevity, reach, and iconic status. The project to find influential games that deserve to be inducted was begun in February by The Strong, the museum of toys located in Rochester NY. “Tetris”, “Super Mario Bros”, “Pac-Man”, and “World of Warcraft” have also been chosen to be part of a permanent exhibit of iconic games. Winners were whittled down from a list of 15 picked by an international panel of academics, journalists, and game experts. “Angry Birds” and “Minecraft” were nominated but didn’t make the final cut.

★ Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie want to buy a Greek island. They’re reportedly considering ponying up $4.7 million for the entire island of Gaia so their family can better enjoy private downtime. An insider says Angie fell in love with the place and at the relatively modest price they’ll have no problem building the vacation home of their dreams. The 43-acre island already has planning approval for up to 6 villas. That means Brangelina’s brood of 6 kids would finally be able to run around freely without worrying about paparazzi. The news follows reports that their home in New Orleans LA is now on the market for $6.5 million.

★ Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen may have decided they wont be participating in John Stamos’ “Fuller House” on Netflix, but that doesn’t mean ‘Michelle Tanner’ will be forgotten. Participating cast member Jodie Sweetin, who played older sister ‘Stephanie’ on the original “Full House” TV series (1987-95), says the ‘Michelle’ character will still have “a presence” on the new show. Quote: “I love and support [Mary-Kate and Ashley], and I think we’re going to be just fine.” Sweetin also reveals that filming on the new series is set to begin next month.
– “Us Weekly”
★ And LA’s “ATX Television Festival” played host to a “Gilmore Girls” reunion of epic proportions Saturday night, with creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, exec producer Daniel Palladino, and stars Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop et al reuniting to look back on the 2000-07 WB/CW series and where their careers have taken them since the show ended. Despite Patterson’s recent comments about a potential revival, Sherman-Palladino has burst that bubble by saying there’s nothing in the works at the moment. However, she says, “If it ever happened, I promise we’d do it correctly.”

APPLE PICKS:
Today Apple’s long-awaited music streaming service will apparently be revealed at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in a move which could disrupt Spotify’s dominance of the sector. Rumors have circulated around the Californian tech giant’s move into streaming in the wake of its record-breaking $3.2-billion purchase of the audio equipment and streaming divisions of Beats Electronics last May. Now sources close to the matter are saying Apple is planning to officially unveil the new service, rumored to be called Apple Music, at WWDC. The service will reportedly work on a $10-per-month subscription model, with an extremely limited number of songs available to those opting not to pay. (Isn’t Songza, which is free, still the best one out there?)

STAR LOCATION:
YouTube’s new ‘Music Insight’ reveals some surprising facts about popular music artists. The analytics tool shows exactly where their videos are most often streamed. A few highlights …
✓ Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert are at the top of the country music game but their main fan base is almost entirely in America, with Chicago, Dallas, and Houston their top 3 markets.
✓ Bruce Springsteen’s videos are more popular in London UK than NYC. The same is true of fellow New Jersey artist Bon Jovi.
✓ Coldplay have a lot of fans in Latin America. In fact, 6 of the top 10 markets where they are most popular are located there, with Mexico City topping the list.
✓ Ed Sheeran’s 3 biggest fan bases are the UK, the USA, and The Phillippines.
✓ Katy Perry is more popular in Mexico City than anywhere in the United States.
✓ Taylor Swift’s videos have been watched a staggering 3.3 billion times worldwide, but the new stats show she has more fans in Bangkok, Thailand than anywhere else.
This tool could be valuable in helping artists to plan tours targeting their most dedicated fans. (Could also help radio programmers select music.)

IN THE MOOD:
What’s being dubbed the ‘female Viagra’ may soon get marketing approval. A panel of experts is supporting the use of the drug ‘flibanserin’ to treat low sexual desire in women. During testing, women taking the drug have reported between 0.5 and 1 more sexually satisfying events per month, which researchers admit are very modest results but significant to those who have a clinical problem. The researchers also suggest that the drug carry warnings about possible strong side effects including fainting and tiredness. The final decision now moves to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), which has previously rejected the drug twice since 2010. (What brand name would you give the drug to make it appealing?)

IN CASE OF THE BIG ONE:
Japan is looking into installing toilets … in elevators. Officials from the country’s infrastructure ministry have proposed that temporary facilities plus emergency drinking water become a requirement in the aftermath of last week’s 7.8-magnitude undersea earthquake, which was felt across the country. In Tokyo alone, almost 20,000 elevators stopped after the quake, with 14 of them trapped between floors. In one case, passengers were stuck for over an hour before being rescued. During Japan’s devastating 2011 quake, some people were trapped in elevators for more than 9 hours. Japan is regularly shaken by minor earthquakes, but seismologists say it’s likely the capital will be hit by the ‘big one’ within the coming decades. (If stuck in an elevator, wouldn’t you rather have a fully stocked bar?)

SON OF CONCORD:
On October 24, 2003 the final flight of the Concorde Supersonic Transport came to an end, and with it, the promise that supersonic travel could transform the aviation industry. Now, more than a decade on, NASA is hoping to revive the dream of supersonic planes and has announced $2.3 million in funding to help make it a reality. The money will be spent on 8 different research projects that each aim to address technical challenges such as the impact of supersonic cruise aircraft in the stratosphere and noise reduction for the aircraft. (Soon you may be able to fly cross country against the time zones and arrive before you started!)
