Get Your BS Here, Hot ‘n Fresh!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
TONIGHT on E! Entertainment’s premiere of “Wild On Tara”, new host Tara Reid visits Athens, where Paris Hilton’s fiancé Paris Latsis invites her crew to his family’s private estate for a ‘pre-party’ before partying at several clubs (word is at a later bash in Sardinia, she gets so wasted she puts a firework in her mouth) . . . Paris Hilton reportedly has a lookalike who is impersonating her at upscale hotels and entertainment venues from Disneyland to Hawaii, a mystery blonde in her 20s who carries a Chihuahua and repeatedly uses the catchphrase “That’s hot” (another publicity stunt dreamed up by Ms Hilton perhaps?) . . . ABC-TV has started production in Lithuania on the TV movie “Have No Fear: The Life of Pope John Paul II”, with the late pope played by Thomas Kretschmann (“The Pianist”) . . . Meantime, actor Cary Elwes has been tapped to play a younger version of the pope in CBS-TV’s upcoming mini-series “Pope John Paul II” . . . “War of the Worlds” has now surpassed “Mission: Impossible 2″ to become Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing movie ever ($549 million worldwide so far) . . . Britney Spears is denying her security staff were involved in that shooting of a photog outside a weekend baby shower she was attending (we all know it was K-Fed) . . . A German family in the town of Idar-Oberstein was shocked to answer the door and find actor Bruce Willis asking to come in and see the house where he was born in 1955 (his father was stationed at a nearby US military base) . . . And, just days after ABC News anchor Peter Jennings’ death, there are already more than a hundred ‘memorabilia items’ up for auction on eBay, including photos, books, bumper stickers, memorial candles, and – ‘Peter Jennings Tribute Ribbon Magnets’.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Duran Duran – Frontman Simon Le Bon is set to compete against 280 others in the 608-mile “Fastnet Yacht Race” aboard the vessel ‘Drum’. That’s the same boat and the same race that almost claimed his life when he capsized in bad weather in 1985.
• Green Day – TONIGHT they kick off a 2-month, 37-city North American tour in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont IL. Jimmy Eat World is the support act.
• Kalan Porter – The reigning “Canadian Idol” champ has a big fan base among mature women. A fan club of them known as ‘Boomers & Hens’ recently gathered in Calgary for the 1st-ever “Kalan Convention”.
• Keith Urban – TONIGHT he’s on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien”.
• Marc Cohn – The “Walking in Memphis” singer is recovering in Denver CO after being shot in the head during an attempted carjacking. He’s married to ABC News anchor Elizabeth Vargas, who’s been a regular fill-in on “World News Tonight” ever since Peter Jennings first became ill.
• Montgomery Gentry – They’ll release a greatest hits package later THIS YEAR and are asking fans to come up with a creative title for it. Contest details are on their official Website.
NET: http://montgomerygentry.musiccitynetworks.com
• Rolling Stones – TONIGHT they’ll play one of their now-legendary surprise club gigs in Toronto (rumored to be the Phoenix), as has become their habit after rehearsing in T-Dot for a tour. They’ll also help ABC-TV start up the 2005 NFL season, appearing on the “NFL Opening Kickoff 2005″ special Thursday, SEPTEMBER 8th before the season opening game (Oakland Raiders vs New England Patriots).
• Sugar Ray – TONIGHT they do “Last Call With Carson Daly” on NBC-TV.

COMING ATTRACTIONS:
Brazilian director Walter Salles (“Motorcycle Diaries”) will finally bring Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” to the bigscreen, the story of a young man who hitches and train-hops across America . . . The upcoming action flick “Blowback”, starring The Rock & Ryan Reynolds as San Francisco cops, is described as a ‘modern-day “Lethal Weapon”-type buddy’ movie (they’re partners on the beat … and at home?) . . . Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner are said to be stoked about doing “Daredevil 2″ together, their first screen collaboration as husband & wife (um, did they actually watch the first dud?) . . . Speaking of duds – “American Pie: Band Camp”, the 4th in the gross-out comedy series, will feature a cast of virtual unknowns and be released straight to DVD this DECEMBER . . . Former “American Pie” star Seann William Scott (‘Bo Duke’ in “Dukes of Hazzard”) is set to next shoot “The Book of Leo”, a comedy about a young man facing a ‘quarter-life crisis’ as he turns 30 . . . An upcoming remake of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” will feature “Wedding Crashers” star Owen Wilson (the 1947 original was headlined by Danny Kaye) . . . And Meryl Streep has signed on to play Martha Mitchell, the whistle-blowing wife of White House Chief of Staff John Mitchell, in “Dirty Tricks”, a movie that will focus on the role of women in the Watergate scandal which down former US president Richard Nixon.

BS BUZZWORDS:
New terms leaking into the lingo …
• ‘Latelyweds’ – Couples who get married after years of living together. (“After 30 years, Ed & I have finally decided to get married. We’re on the gift registry at the retirement home.”)
• ‘Teleworking’ – A new term to replace ‘telecommuting’ because these days, with wi-fi, Blackberries and laptops, you can work not only from home but just about anywhere else from a client’s office to an airport lounge.
• ‘Emotional Cheating’ – Cheating on an emotional but not a sexual level, a betrayal that’s still traumatic to the significant other. The term has recently coming to light due to the Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie mess.

FORGET-ME-NOT:
According to a new study, men are twice as likely to forget a partner’s birthday or their anniversary as women. 1 in 5 men forget at least 1 special occasion per year, compared to 1 in 10 women. While men often blame stress at work, the study suggests that this may not be the case – it may be that women are simply better at reminding themselves of dates. (Or maybe guys are intentionally trying to forget the day they got married?)

COFFEE TO GO:
A Houston TX native nicknamed ‘Winter’ (Rafael Antonio Lozano) set out in 1997 to visit every Starbucks store on the planet. After 8 years, he has now visited 4,775 Starbucks in North America and 213 in other parts of world. Outside of North America, he’s been to Starbucks in Spain, England, France and Japan. Hey, the guy might actually make it! There are 5,715 corporate-owned Starbucks worldwide, leaving him just 940 short of his goal. (Which he plans to visit as soon as his hands quit shaking.)

WHAT NEXT, CHOCOLATE WIENERS?
Japan’s Nissui Corp has come up with an unusual solution to flagging sales of its fish-meat sausages – new ‘Strawberry Milk Sausages’ set to go on sale in SEPTEMBER. The new flavor is designed specifically to attract children. After a survey determined that strawberries are the favorite fruit of kids, the firm decided to use the flavor by adding strawberry juice and milk to its products. The texture and flavor of the sausages are reportedly close to those of regular fish-meat sausages, with the exception that an aftertaste of strawberry remains. A Nissui official claims strawberries go well with minced fish. (Urgh. Okay … who wants breakfast now?)

SLAPPED WITH A FINE:
NYC’s Hot 97 (WQHT) is paying out $240,000 in a settlement for running a so-called “Smackfest” promotion in which young women took turns violently slapping each other in order to win concert tickets and cash. Images of the slapping then ran on the station’s Website. The contest was investigated as a potential violation of NY state law on promotion of a combative sport. $60,000 of the settlement will go to a non-profit group that promotes awareness of domestic violence. (The sad thing is … $240,000 is cheap for all the publicity it garnered.)

FROM THE BS POLL VAULT:
A BS snapshot of who we are and what we do …
• 75% of the emotions we generate on a daily basis are affected by smell.
• 57% of us hit the snooze button on the alarm clock … at least 3 times.
• 41% of parents have given their child a nickname.

• 24% of video gamers say they’ve reduced their TV viewing over the past year.
• 14% of golfers have snuck onto a course without paying.

POD PAYMENT:
Thanks to a Supreme Court of Canada decision, iPod owners who paid a levy of as much as $25 will soon be able to get their money back. The tariff was collected by the Canadian Private Copying Collective, a non-profit agency that works on behalf of musicians and record companies. It’s another elaborate plan to help the industry survive in a digital world. Details of how to apply for the refund from Apple Canada have not been announced at this point. (You can bet it’ll involve jumping and hoops.)

• Over 60% of all US paper currency is held outside America’s borders.

AND WE QUOTE:
“You call yourself a Christian, I call you a hypocrite/You call yourself a patriot. Well, I think you’re full of sh–t!/How come you’re so wrong, my sweet neo-con.”   – Anti-Bush lyrics from the new Rolling Stones’ tune “Sweet Neo Con”, as reveled by Mick Jagger in the new edition of “Newsweek”.
