BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The “Game of Thrones” actor best known to fans Ser Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, Hafthor Björnsson, crushed the world record on Saturday by deadlifting 1,104 lbs. (501kg). Björnsson, who stands 6 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs 450 pounds, set the record at his home gym in Reykjavík, Iceland. But former deadlift champion and 2017 World’s Strongest Man winner Eddie Hall — who set the previous record in 2016 — disputed the event, pointing out that the new mark was set “in [Björnsson’s] home gym with a bunch of [his] pals.”

★ Dwayne Johnson and Shawn Mendes led the stars collecting prizes virtually at the 2020 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday night. The hour-long ceremony was initially scheduled for March 22, but was replaced with an online event in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. But the crisis didn’t halt proceedings, with stars tuning in to provide entertainment and accept prizes with speeches from their homes. Johnson kicked off the evening by receiving the ‘Favourite Movie Actor’ prize for his roles in “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” and “Jumanji: The Next Level”. Mendes won ‘Favourite Male Artist’ along with ‘Favourite Music Collaboration’ for ‘Senorita’, with his girlfriend Camila Cabello.

★ Ryan Reynolds delivered the commencement speech for his alma mater, Kitsilano Secondary School, via YouTube. He shared inspiring words for the class of 2020, and described the school in British Columbia as “the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” At the end of the video, after congratulating the graduating class, Reynolds mentioned that he misses his favorite local pizza shop, Nat’s Pizzeria – and because of that, “every grad gets one large pizza on me.”

• Chris Lane — shaved his beard off for a good cause. He first shared video showing his full quarantine beard, explaining that he is about to shave it to bring attention to Schick Hydro’s #ShaveFromHome program to bring awareness to the National Out of Work Barbers COVID-19 Relief Fund. NO DOUBLE SPACING: WORD!
Those of a certain age were taught in computer class (or…ahem…TYPING class…) that the end of a sentence should always be followed by two spaces. Now, Microsoft has thrown down the gauntlet and declared that two spaces between sentences is too many. The style choice will now be marked as an error in Microsoft Word — and users who press the space bar twice after a period will be met with those dreaded blue squiggly lines, signifying a keystroke error. The change is rolling out gradually, so you may not notice it until your software updates. The usage of two spaces is a relic from the era of typewriters, when typists spaced twice to more clearly define the end of a sentence. Characters were “monospaced” back then, which means they all took up the same amount of space on the page — today, most fonts adjust the width of characters so sentences are easier to read. Because of this, very few style guides advise using two spaces after a period. The good news: If you absolutely cannot imagine life without your beloved double space, you can do something about it: When Word marks it as an error, right click to view your options. You can ask Word to ignore this issue when it comes up again.
(I’m not sure how Apple handles this, but if I ask a Mac user, I’m sure they’ll say “Better”!)
(Double-spacing used to look so right…and now it looks so wrong!)
(“Ignore the issue when it comes up again”? Can I get this program for my wife?)

BLOODY MURDER:
So, something called “Murder hornets” have been spotted in Canada and the US for the first time. Actually called “Asian giant hornets”, the massive insects got the nickname “murder hornets” because a series of stings (which have been described as feeling like piercing hot thumbtacks) can be fatal – and they feed on bees. Their queens are more than two inches long, and the insects have been described as “something out of a monster cartoon” with mandibles shaped like shark fins which can puncture a beekeeping suit. Asian giant hornets kill up to 50 people a year in Japan, and have now been found in Washington State and British Columbia. Some experts say there is the potential that “murder hornets” could establish themselves in North America and eventually wipe out domestic bee populations.
(OK, OK…another month of self-isolation…no problem…)
(In the continuing saga of the weirdest year on record, May just told April to “Hold my beer!)
(Of course, right now, our Australian friends are sweeping a Sydney funnel web spider out of their kitchen, and saying, “THAT’S not a scary bug. THIS is a scary bug!”)

BEST-EVER REVENGE SONGS:
1. ‘Kim’ – Eminem: A profanity-fuelled hateful stream of consciousness, drawing on feelings of violent instability, promising all kinds of horrific things to his real-life wife, whom he also imitates in the song.
2. ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now’ – Elvis Costello: Laced with sarcasm, it’s an eloquent anthem that’s entirely about sticking it to your ex, and telling them exactly how you feel, and sounding great doing it.
3. ‘Thank U, Next’ – Ariana Grande: It clearly draws on her many emotions about both the death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and the growing spat between her and her more recent ex-fiancé, comedian Pete Davidson. Catchy, upbeat and empowering.
4. ‘These Boots are Made for Walkin’’ – Nancy Sinatra: Her delivery is calm and cool, but carries an air of unwavering control as she tells off and promises to walk out on (and all over) her unfaithful partner. And that bass line…
5. ‘Gives You Hell’ – The All-American Rejects: Singer Jason Ritter calls it: “A ‘tongue-in-cheek’ view of someone that you hate, that puts you down, and channelling this hatred into a song that’s designed to tell them to back off.”
6. ‘Rolling in the Deep’ – Adele: When Adele produces a song about being betrayed by a former lover, you know it’s going carry a huge amount of emotional heft. And this is about as vengeful as Adele can get.
7. ‘Since You Been Gone’ – Kelly Clarkson: It’s all about feeling like you’ve come out on top following a break-up. A song of self-assurance, and of being better off without your ex.
8. ‘Smile’ – Lily Allen: Inspired by being betrayed by her boyfriend, she barely masks the contempt she now feels for him.
9. ‘Forget You’ – Cee Lo Green: That’s the “clean” title. And the version he performed with The Muppets on the Grammys.
10. ‘Cry Me a River’ – Justin Timberlake: About 10 years later, he finally admitted it was about his ex, Britney Spears.
(I’m gonna come right out and say that there are about 50 country songs that can out-revenge these without breaking a sweat!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A Tokyo aquarium closed during the coronavirus outbreak is asking people to make video calls to their eels so the sensitive creatures remember humans exist and don’t pose a threat. The Sumida Aquarium says its animals have become used to a largely human-free environment, and in a bid to reacquaint the eels with humans, the aquarium is setting up five tablets facing the tank housing the delicate creatures, with eel enthusiasts asked to connect via FaceTime. Once the video calls start, people are asked to show their faces, wave and talk to the eels.

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Cinco de Mayo”, a Mexican holiday commemorating the 1862 victory over French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Mexicans (and honorary Mexicans) everywhere celebrate with parades and fiestas. That’s likely the reason today is also called “Totally Chipotle Day”, a celebration of the smoked jalapeño pepper. (And how weird is it that this year, Cinco de Mayo falls on a Taco Tuesday, only to be ruined by a virus named after a Mexican beer?)
• “Cartoonists Day”, kicking off “Cartoon Art Appreciation Week”, to create greater public awareness of and appreciation for the cartoon. Why today? “The Yellow Kid”, the first newspaper comic strip, was initially published on this day 125 years ago (1895). What’s your favorite? Least favorite?
• “Hoagie Day”, celebrating the super-sized sandwich also known as a sub, grinder, hero, Italian sandwich, po’ boy, wedge, zeppelin, or torpedo. What’s the best combo?
• “International Midwives Day”, observed since 1991 in over 50 nations to recognize and honor these healthcare professionals who are experts in women’s reproductive health.
• “International Roller Derby Day”, an unofficial worldwide holiday celebrating the unique sport.
• “Oyster Day”, celebrating the mollusk delicacy enjoyed by many. (What brave soul could have first decided to eat one of these things?)

BAD BS WAYS TO INITIATE YOUR SON INTO MANHOOD:
✗ Put cream on his face and let the cat shave him with its tongue.
✗ Teach him the secret male rituals of leaving the toilet seat up and the toilet paper roll empty.
✗ Have a ceremony where you give him his own remote control.
✗ Lead him through an afternoon of rigorous physical training in the backyard while you sit in a lawn chair with a half-gallon of ice cream.
✗ Eat until you’re about to burst and then ride the Screamin’ Hurler roller coaster together.
✗ Walk behind him through his school halls yelling, “You da man!”
✗ Send him to the local discount store to buy mom’s ‘personal things’.
✗ Shotput catching.
TODAY’S SCOOP OF BS:
➠ Today is Cinco de Mayo, a day of remembrance of an important military victory for Mexico, and a source of pride for its people. (Please keep that in mind while you’re throwing up Dos Equis and pork rinds…)
➠ It may be Cinco De Mayo, but I don’t celebrate because it promotes stereotypes. (Plus I can’t be trusted with alcohol since I’m Irish!)
➠ I just read that the average person spends 33 minutes a day on Facebook. (“Like” if that describes you!)
➠ News anchor Brian Williams is 61 today. (Remember, no surprise parties. He still has PTSD from being under heavy fire . . . from his bosses for his pathological lying)
➠ Instagram has upped its fundraising game with a new feature that allows people to make real-time donations during live broadcasts. (In other news about Instagram benefiting the world… . . . nope, that’s it.)
