BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Almost three months after former President Donald Trump left the White House, another Republican reality TV star is eying a political campaign of their own. Reportedly, Caitlyn Jenner has been “actively” exploring running for governor of California and has been talking with political consultants about potentially doing so. Jenner is a Republican who voted for Trump in 2016, although in a 2018 interview, she criticized him and said she was wrong to think he would help transgender people as president.

★ Prince Harry’s next on-screen appearance will look very different from his last. While he was most recently on CBS with Meghan Markle for their revealing interview with Oprah, the two are now focusing their efforts on their first project with Netflix, since signing a deal with the streaming service last fall. Their producing debut will be “Heart of Invictus,” a docuseries on the Invictus Games — the global adaptive sports competition Prince Harry founded. It will document competitors’ training and reveal their compelling life stories, as well as follow the Games’ organizers as they support the athletes.

★ After earning raves at the Sundance Film Festival, the first trailer has been released for the new documentary “Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street.” The documentary shows the improbable beginnings of “Sesame Street,” using archival footage and interviews with the major players who brought the series to life. The film looks at the groundbreaking series, which focused on real-world issues facing children, including the effects of race, equality, death, education, and representation, that were unheard of in children’s programming. ★ Versatile British actor Paul Ritter, best known for playing ‘Eldred Worple’ in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, has died at age 54. Ritter, whose roles ranged from a hapless suburban patriarch in the sitcom “Friday Night Dinner” to a Soviet engineer who helps cause a nuclear disaster in “Chernobyl,” had been suffering from a brain tumor. He also appeared in the James Bond film “Quantum of Solace” as government adviser ‘Guy Haines’. “Chernobyl” screenwriter Craig Mazin said on Twitter that Ritter was “one of the most gentle, gracious and brilliant people I’ve ever known, much less worked with.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

MEDICAL ADVICE VARIANT:
Maybe it’s time to put away the Clorox and bottles of hand sanitizer that seem to line the entrances to every school, restaurant and supermarket wanting to show off their COVID-19 safety protocols. While so-called “hygiene theater” may be reassuring to the public, these precautions are not necessary, according to a revised guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (in the US). The CDC says: “It is possible for people to be infected through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects, but the risk is generally considered to be low. The CDC estimates the chance of contracting the coronavirus through surface transmission to be lower than 1 in 10,000. As scientists have known for a while, the virus is spread almost exclusively by airborne and aerosolized particles. Despite this, many establishments have continued to insist on strict sanitization protocols, with some school districts even closing classrooms for full-day “deep cleaning.”
(Uh-oh…we’ve got a LOT of commercials to re-do…)
(That’s fine, but I’m still going to clean my oranges before I lick them…)
(OK, but can we maybe still have hand sanitizer in the bathrooms?)

YAWN PHENOMENON:
Although it’s well known that yawning is contagious, we never really knew why — until now. Researchers recently spent 5 months following two prides of lions at a game reserve in South Africa and their findings give some idea as to why the phenomenon occurs. Scientists found that spontaneous yawning mainly happened when lions were relaxed, suggesting that like humans, yawning may be used to cool the brain and increase blood flow. It was also observed that if two lions were lying down and one yawned, the other would yawn. And then, if the first yawner stood up, so did the other lion. That seems to support the theory that contagious yawning evolved to boost the vigilance of a group of social animals. This could mean that it has advantages for “threat detection”. The study, which was published in the journal “Animal Behaviour”, found that the likelihood of a lion yawning was an incredible 139 times higher if they had just seen another member of the pride yawning. Contagious yawning has also been observed in elephants – after their human handlers did so first.
(Let’s face it, of all the bodily functions that could have been contagious, it could be a lot worse than yawning!)
(Yes, but when lions yawn, does it get them out of having to watch another rom-com with their wife?)
(Maybe lions DO yawn together, but they couldn’t possibly look as horrendous as my wife and I when they do it…)

PLAY THESE SPORTS, STAY YOUNG:
According to research in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings involving data from The Copenhagen City Heart Study, certain sports can help you live stronger and longer. (Worth noting: The researchers admit that the jury is still out about whether the relationship is simply correlated or causal.) Over 25 years of tracking more than 8,500 people, they found that these sports and activities (done regularly) increased life expectancy the most compared to sedentary peers:
1. Tennis: increased lifespan by 9.7 years
2. Badminton: 6.2 years
3. Soccer: 4.7 years
4. Cycling: 3.7 years
5. Swimming: 3.4 years
6. Jogging: 3.2 years
7. Calisthenics: 3.1 years
(Believe me…If I go swimming, it’s NOT going to make me live longer…)

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a study, turning to “Dr. Google” does not make a person’s assessment of their symptoms less accurate, or worsen their anxiety regarding their health. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, found that when patients Google their symptoms, it actually leads to a slight improvement in diagnosis once they are in a medical setting, contrary to the common concern that the internet can lead them down the wrong path. Study author Dr. David Levine said: “It is likely OK to tell our patients to ‘Google it’…there’s not a lot of harm in that, and, in fact, there may be some good.”
