BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Star Trek’s ‘Captain Kirk’ is rocketing into space this month — boldly going where no other sci-fi actor has gone before. Jeff Bezos’ space travel company, Blue Origin, announced Monday that William Shatner will blast off from West Texas on Oct. 12. At age 90, Shatner will become the oldest person in space. He’ll join 3 others — 2 of them paying customers — aboard the New Shepard rocket. It will be the company’s second launch with a crew.

★ Surprisingly, Jeff Bezos praised Netflix’s co-CEOs Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos for the rival platform’s “impressive and inspiring” international content. Bezos’ tweet also included a positive comment about the most talked about show at the moment, “Squid Game”, causing some to wonder if it is a sign of something bigger happening between Amazon and Netflix — perhaps a team-up or even a buyout. Squid Game is already Netflix’s top show in 90 countries, and is on track to be the streamer’s most popular original series ever, a title currently held by “Bridgerton.”

★ “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” may be devouring the U.S. box office, but the world belongs to Bond. “No Time to Die” finally arrived in 54 countries over the weekend and grossed $119 million, the best launch for a film since the pandemic began without China included. Of course, the biggest market for the film is Bond’s homeland of the UK, where the film set a pandemic era record with an estimated $34.8 million 4-day opening.

★ The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has announced that Daniel Craig will be honored with the 2,704th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame tomorrow. His star will be placed next to that of Roger Moore, who also portrayed ‘James Bond’.

SHOOTING THE BULL

GREEN CARS:
Yes, old cars have a reputation for being “gas guzzlers”. But a surprising new study says that trading in your old vehicle for a brand-new electric car may actually do more harm than good. Researchers in Japan say keeping your older gasoline-powered car longer leads to fewer emissions. A team from Kyushu University says while electricity and hydrogen are cleaner energy sources, it still takes a lot of energy to build these vehicles. They found keeping older fuel-efficient cars on the road longer reduces CO2 emissions significantly more than speeding up the global transition to green technology. They point out that as demand for new cars increases, it results in an increase in emissions from manufacturing. If car owners kept their vehicles on the road 10% longer, the researchers say the overall carbon footprint of cars would decrease by 1%.
(Don’t tell that to me – tell it to my car!)
(Who knew electric cars could backfire?)
(This story has been brought to you by [***local car dealer with a good sense of humor***] , who I’m pretty sure just cancelled all their commercials!)

PUMPKIN SPICE: NICE:
The good news about the fact that these days it’s pumpkin spice everything, everywhere: It’s good for you – or at least good for your mood. The Dynamic Perception Lab at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore says the smell of pumpkin spice gives us the “warm, fuzzies”. How? The part of your brain that processes smell is closely tied to the part responsible for memories. This accounts for the fact that smells like musty books can take you back to long study sessions at the library or campfires remind you of nights at summer camp. The popularity of pumpkin spice comes from both the scent — the familiar cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg — and our previous experiences smelling, tasting and even just being aware of the aroma. And because pumpkin spice is only generally available in the Fall, the brain associates the smell with affectionate, warm, cozy thoughts and memories of fun activities enjoyed at this time of year.
(Of course, the minute my brain associated pumpkin spice with raking leaves, it was over for me!)
(I’m pretty sure this was all true – until they came up with pumpkin spice mac n’ cheese!)

CAN’T MASK OUR EXCITEMENT:
We all know that office celebrations can be a great way to break up the daily grind and build office culture. On the other hand, for every fun office celebration, there’s usually one that takes such a drastic left turn, that you’d swear it was organized by Michael Scott and the rest of the Dunder Mifflin gang. But don’t let that stop you this Halloween. According to a survey, most workers want to have an office Halloween party. One thousand employees were asked their thoughts on Halloween celebrations, and 77% indicated they want and enjoy them. Some other findings:
• 57% said their workplace will celebrate Halloween in some way
• 33% plan on dressing up at work for Halloween
• 27% think their boss will dress up for Halloween
• 14% say a co-worker has dressed completely inappropriately for a work Halloween event
• Candy corn is the least-popular Halloween candy among workers
(Second least-popular Halloween candy? Used candy corn…)
(Hey, any time I can eat candy on the company’s dime and not have to obey the dress code, I’m ready to party!)

MANDELA EFFECT:
The Mandela Effect is basically “mis-remembering something which you are surprised to find is incorrect. Here are some great examples:
✗ Nelson Mandela’s Death: This is where the phenomenon got its name. Countless people distinctly remember him dying in prison in the 1980s. The problem? He died in 2013 at age 95.
✗ Looney Tunes, Not Toons:  It makes almost zero sense, but yes, the cartoon was spelled as “T-u-n-e-s”, rather than “T-o-o-n-s”.
✗ The Berenstein Bears Didn’t Exist:  The lovable cartoon bear family actually spelled their last name with an “a”: The Berenstain Bears.
✗ Fruit of the Loom Logo: It is a drawing of fruits and leaves. But many clearly “remember” it as having a cornucopia (horn of plenty) behind the fruits. Nope. It has actually never been there.
✗ Febreze:  You might use the stuff every day, but be honest: You thought it was “Febreeze,” didn’t you? Only one e before the ‘z’.
✗ Oscar Mayer:  There’s an “A” in “Mayer”?! Be honest: You thought it was “Meyer”, didn’t you?
✗ Monopoly Man and His Monocle:  … or more like the fact that he doesn’t have one. Yes, he has a big, bushy mustache and a top hat. But no monocle.
✗ “Life is Like a Box of Chocolates”: … is not what Tom Hanks’ ‘Forrest Gump’ said. Listen closely…he says, “Life was like a box of chocolates.”
✗ “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall”:  That wasn’t a line either. In fact, in “Snow White” the Wicked Queen says, “Magic mirror on the wall …” (Yes, my childhood has been ruined too.)
✗ Smokey Bear:  Yep, that’s his name. Contrary to popular belief, his name isn’t “Smokey the Bear”.
✗ Sinbad Never Played a Genie:  Bizarre, I know. Many people “distinctly remember” seeing the comedian play a genie in a movie called “Shazaam”. Maybe they’re confusing this memory with the movie “Kazaam”, starring Shaquille O’Neal as a genie. (Well, they’re both bald…)
(Any others?)

DID YOU KNOW?
We typically think of “fall” as the North American version of the word “autumn”, but it was in fact in widespread use in England until relatively recently. Originally a shortening of the phrase “fall of the leaf”, it was a common term in England in the 17th century. The word “autumn” entered English from the French “automne” and didn’t come into common use until the 18th century.
