Sheeters Always Prosper!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Taylor Swift serenaded Carole King, former U.S. President Barack Obama praised JAY-Z, and Paul McCartney paid tribute to the Foo Fighters on Saturday at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which also honored Tina Turner, The Go-Go’s, and Todd Rundgren. The ceremony, in Cleveland, was packed with A-listers including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Jennifer Lopez, Lionel Richie and Keith Urban. Swift opened the show with a pop version of King’s  ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’. Tina Turner, appearing via video from her home in Switzerland, said: “If they’re still giving me awards at 81, I must be doing something right”. McCartney said he and Grohl were both “ordinary kind of goofy” kids who had somehow fallen into rock and roll music.
The 2021 ceremony will be broadcast on HBO Nov. 20.

★ Dave Chappelle continues to use the Netflix controversy and transgender community as a punchline. Comments the comedian made about trans people in his special “The Closer” sparked backlash last month — and it doesn’t appear to be over. At a standup show in New Orleans, which he co-headlined with fellow pot-stirrer Joe Rogan, Chappelle poked fun at being cancelled amid the backlash (again). He also made new trans jokes, and said: “I haven’t been in this much trouble in my life”, and reportedly went on to spend his hour at the mic roasting so-called “PC culture.”

★ Will Ferrell turned down a $29 million offer to star in an “Elf” sequel. He appeared in the 2003 festive film as ‘Buddy Hobbs’, a human who was raised by Santa’s elves, but he rejected the chance to make a follow-up because the premise was too similar to the original. Ferrell told Hollywood Reporter: “I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place…I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.’” Last year, James Caan – who played Buddy’s father, ‘Walter’, SAID an Elf sequel “will never happen” because of tension between Ferrell and director Jon Favreau.

★ Carole Baskin may not be taking part in “Tiger King” Season 2, but she will be telling her side of the story in “Carole Baskin’s Cage Fight” on Discovery+. The streamer just announced the new docu-series about Baskin, to premiere on Saturday, Nov. 13. Carole Baskin’s Cage Fight will depict how the release of “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” on Netflix impacted her real life. It will likely give details on Baskin’s claims that she was misled by the film crew of that series and misrepresented on screen.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Adele — After breaking multiple records on Spotify and Amazon Music with her single ‘Easy On Me’, Apple Music says that her “30” album is the most pre-added album ever on the platform, and on top of that, it has broken the “record for largest single-day pre-add in history.”
• Ed Sheeran — had a “solo party” to celebrate the release of his new album “=”, and says he is the “most proud” he has ever been of a piece of work. The record dropped on Friday, but he was unable to go out after testing positive for coronavirus, so he had to celebrate from his home in Suffolk.
• Fugees – have postponed their reunion tour, which was supposed to begin in Chicago tomorrow. The group wrote on Instagram that the decision was “to ensure the best chance that all cities on the tour are fully open”. They have not yet announced their make-up dates, which are slated for “early 2022.”
• Madonna – has stirred up controversy, again. In a spread for V Magazine, she and photographer Steven Klein used the last photos taken of Marilyn Monroe before her death in 1962, as inspiration. But many people online felt the pics are in bad taste and “ghoulish,” considering Monroe’s overdose and death. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3hxr6zv7
• Queen – The new documentary “Freddie Mercury: The Final Act” will be broadcast by BBC Two sometime this month. It tells “the story of the extraordinary final chapter of (his) life, as well as the journey leading up to the Freddie Mercury tribute concert at Wembley Stadium that followed.”
• AC/DC – Their ‘Thunderstruck’ music video has surpassed one billion views on YouTube. It was the lead single from their 1990 album “The Razors Edge”, and was first uploaded to YouTube in 2012.
• George Strait – honors police officers, firefighters and other first responders in his new video for his 2019 single ‘The Weight of the Badge’. He wrote on Facebook that the clip pays tribute to them because “The people in this music video are our friends and neighbors who carry #TheWeightOfTheBadge each day”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/883p3n8a
• Dierks Bentley – Not only did he release the video for his single ‘Beers On Me’ on Friday, he also announced the next leg of his tour of the same name. The 20-city run launches Jan. 6 in London ON, and hits 11 Canadian cities before crossing back into the US for 9 more though Feb. 18. The tour will include openers Jordan Davis along with Tenille Arts and Lainey Wilson. LINK: https://youtu.be/rpsAYUBLVow
• Miranda Lambert — Upon her recent induction into Fort Worth, Texas’ National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, she revealed that she “just learned to ride [a horse] at 30 years old, and I’m still working on it”. She says that the Hall of Fame embodies the fact that “there’s cowgirls of all kinds. And it’s really about grit, determination, drive.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

ZUCK BOOK:
Yes, Facebook (the company, not the platform) is changing its name to “Meta”. And following the announcement, a company called “Meta Materials” experienced a sharp stock market boost. Canadian-based Meta Materials is unrelated to the social media giant, but saw its shares rise more than 30% on Friday. Meta Materials is a material science-based company, creating technology for things such as ‘invisibly heating a window in a car’. While the increase in its share value is probably a case of mistaken identity, CEO of Meta Materials George Palikaras is enjoying the fuss, tweeting: “I would like to cordially welcome @Facebook to the #metaverse. Meta, meet META® :-)” (***Note the trademark symbol!***) Other Twitter reactions to Facebook’s announcement:
⇒ And it was on that day that ‘that’s so meta’ went from being an interesting observation to a devastating insult. – Hank Green
⇒ He could also legally change his name to Jason Momoa, but the truth remains the same. – Linda Childers
⇒ Anagram of Facebook Meta is Backfat Emo, which isn’t any worse as a name – James Felton
⇒ this all happened because zuckerberg never meta girl until college – Brandy Jensen
⇒ BIG NEWS lol jk still Twitter — Twitter

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ Two middle school students are being praised for their brave actions that helped save their school bus driver. Conner Doss and Kane Daugherty, both students at East Paulding Middle School outside Atlanta, were on a crowded bus when their driver, Miss Julie, pulled over and yelled for help. When Kane ran up to her, she was bright red and shaking. He picked up the dispatch radio and asked for help. Dispatch called 911 and helped the boys set the emergency brake, flashing lights and emergency stop arm. The boys knew Miss Julie had diabetes, and got her to eat and drink something as they waited for help. With their classmates, they waved down cars and caught the attention of a pastor, who prayed with the worried students. Miss Julie is now recovering, and the pair were recognized for their bravery at a recent school board meeting. (When I was a kid, the nicest thing we ever did for our driver was not show up!)
➢ A young dog-lover has made it his mission to get as many dogs as possible out of New York City shelters and adopted into loving homes. 11-year-old Evan Bisnauth lives in the Bronx. He goes to Animal Care Centers and helps socialize dogs by talking and reading books to them. His favorite is “Belly Rubbins for Bubbins”, which is “about a dog that was placed in the shelter and got adopted.” He says: “I like reading that to the dogs because when I’m done reading the book I’m like, ‘You will get adopted. Now I have hope for you.'” Bisnauth wants people to know that “shelter dogs are not bad dogs. They are just looking for good people.” He was recently named ASPCA’s Kid of the Year.

CHARGED UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS:
What tech devices do we most want to find under the Christmas Tree this year? According to a global survey by YouGov, a 5G phone is going to be the item that Santa has the most requests for, with 38% of survey respondents indicating that is at the top of their Christmas list. Coming in second was a robot vacuum (34%), and wireless earphones were third (30%). Video doorbells (24%) and smart speakers (19%) were next. About 1 in 5 listed fitness tech like wearable trackers (21%) or connected exercise equipment such as Peloton. Other popular tech gift ideas include: a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and wearable fitness trackers (like fitbits and apple watches).
(I’m hoping for a 5G phone, too. And I’ll get one – as soon as 6G comes out, and my kid has to have THAT!)
(I’m hoping for a Bluetooth garden clipper. But I’ve always been into ‘cutting hedge’ technology…)

NEW GOOD WORDS:
We heard late last week that Merriam-Webster has added 455 new words to the dictionary. Many of them have emerged due to the pandemic, which has played a big part in our lives over the past 20 months. Here are some of the new additions for 2022:

☞ doorbell camera : a small camera designed for use on an exterior door, that includes a doorbell, and often has a built-in microphone and speaker.
☞ air fryer: an airtight electrical appliance for quick cooking of foods by means of convection currents circulated rapidly by a fan.
☞ ghost kitchen: a commercial cooking facility used for the preparation of food consumed off the premises — called also cloud kitchen, dark kitchen.

☞ TBH: abbreviation meaning “to be honest”.

(How is it that ‘dad-bod’ isn’t in there already?) My family’s been using it on me for years!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Four years after the “Greatest Show On Earth” shut down, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is returning — without animal acts. The 3-ring circus shut down 2017 after a 146-year run. Costly court battles with animal rights activists led circus officials to end elephant acts in 2016. Without the elephants, ticket sales declined drastically. Officials also blamed the rise of online games and videos, which made the “Greatest Show On Earth” not seem that great anymore. An official announcement of its return is expected sometime next year.

BS WHACK CANDY FACTS:
(If you have kids, here are some fun facts about the candy that was once inside those wrappers you’ve found laying around your house over the past 12 hours or so…)
✓ The Milky Way bar was developed to mimic the taste of a milkshake, a popular treat in the 1920s.
✓ Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are named after Harry Burnett “H.B.” Reese, who invented peanut butter cups in 1928, and originally sold them for a penny each.
✓ The Ms on candy coated M&M chocolates stand for Mars & Murrie, AKA Forrest E. Mars Sr. and Bruce Murrie, the treat’s co-founders.
✓ The lollipop was invented in 1908 by George Smith. Although hard candy had been around for a while, Smith came up with his own version and named it after his favorite racehorse, “Lolly Pop”.
✓ Based on criteria including flavor, acidity, bitterness, and sweetness, wine experts recommend pairing Whoppers with cabernet sauvignon, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with sherry, and Hershey’s Kisses with zinfandel.
