BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Drew Barrymore faced a scary situation on Monday night. The daytime TV personality hosted a Q&A with singer Reneé Rapp in New York when the event was interrupted by a man rushing the stage. Video posted to TikTok showed Barrymore and Rapp caught off guard by the man, who shouted “You know who I am…I need to see you at some point while you’re in New York.” He was swiftly blocked by security as the pair were escorted off the stage to safety. They later returned to the stage, after the man was removed. The original TikTok post alleged that the man who rushed the stage was a known stalker, though that has not been confirmed. ★ Sylvester Stallone is set to deliver a keynote speech at the Toronto Film Festival as part of the “In Conversation With…” series where the “Rocky” and “Rambo” writer-actor-director will discuss his long Hollywood career. The action icon’s discussion of his film industry longevity coincides with “Sly”, Stallone’s career-spanning documentary for Netflix from director Thom Zimny, being tapped to close TIFF on Sept. 16 with a glitzy world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall. The Toronto Film Festival will run Sept. 7-17.

★ The mirror ball is back! The first poster and promo have been unveiled for season 32 of “Dancing with the Stars”, with host Alfonso Ribeiro and new co-host Julianne Hough. In March, it was announced that Hough will be joining the show as co-host, taking over from Tyra Banks. In a video promo for the new season, Ribeiro and Hough show off their dance movies, as an announcer promises “a new spin” on the reality competition. Since the vid was posted, it has been announced that “Bachelorette” star Charity Lawson will appear as a for the upcoming 32nd season. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/53wnzkkj

★ Sienna Miller is pregnant! The 41-year-old “American Woman” actress revealed she is expecting her second child — as she was photographed in a bikini while vacationing in Ibiza. Miller spent time at the beach, wearing a brown 2-piece that accentuated her baby bump. Prior to her vacation, Miller was spotted spending time in St. Tropez with her 26-year-old boyfriend Oli Green. No official word from Miller yet, who is already mom to 10-year-old daughter Marlowe, whom she shares with Tom Sturridge.

★ “The Golden Bachelor” finally has a premiere date. The new addition to the “Bachelor” franchise, this one revolving around Gerry Turner finding a second shot at love, will premiere Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. ET. That’s a change from the network’s previously announced schedule, which had “The Golden Bachelor” premiering on Mondays after “Dancing with the Stars.” In the revised lineup, the new spinoff will be followed by “Bachelor in Paradise”. A premiere date for “Dancing with the Stars” is expected to be shared soon. (I assumed “The Golden Bachelor” would air at 4pm – just before the early-bird special at the country club!)

★ Movie lovers have a great reason to go to the theater this weekend. Sunday is National Cinema Day, when movie houses across North America will celebrate the joys of moviegoing with $4 tickets for every show. The event is mounted each year by the Movie Theatre Association of Canada, in partnership with the US-based Cinema Foundation. Over 3,000 venues will participate in National Cinema Day, with movies showing on over 30,000 screens across both countries.

SHOOTING THE BULL

GENERATION INNOVATION:
☞ Remember when if you saw someone watching TV with the subtitles turned on, you immediately assumed they were hard of hearing? Well, that’s not the case any longer. Possibly thanks to the fact that TikTok has helped normalize captions for young media consumers, a UK survey found that 80% of people aged 18-25 “use subtitles all or part of the time” when watching TV. And a poll of TV viewers in the US found that 70% of Gen Z respondents rely on captions “most of the time” compared to only 35% of Baby Boomers [those 59-77]. (In Gen Z’s defense, their parents did tell them they should read more!)
☞ The very thought was laughable just a few years ago, but Gen Z has canceled the fan-favorite acronym “LOL”. Instead, the slang-savvy generation has coined a more complicated term: “IJBOL”. Guessed it yet? It means “I just burst out laughing.” Admittedly, IJBOL isn’t quite as catchy as millennial terms like “LMAO” “ROFL” or “LOL”, but “IJBOL” — pronounced “eej-bowl” is more closely associated with “Gen Z humor”, which , if you ask any Gen Zer, is funnier. (Am I dating myself, then, when I text “Hahahahahahaha”?)

WATCH OUT:
You might feel like you’re all “on fleek” (or whatever term the kids are using these days) when you’re wearing your stylish Apple Watch or Fitbit, but scientists say there is a good chance it is covered in harmful bacteria. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University tested plastic, rubber, cloth, leather, and metal (gold and silver) wristbands, and found that 95% of them were contaminated with some kind of dangerous bacteria. Want more details? 85% were found with Staphylococcus spp — which causes staph infections, 60% had E. coli bacteria — and 30% carried potentially deadly Pseudomonas spp. These bacteria can lead to things like pneumonia and blood infections.
(Maybe they need to come up with a watch app that counts bacteria, in addition to steps!)
(Ever notice that scientists are always discovering that common things, like smartphones, doorknobs, kitchen sinks, elevator buttons – and, yes, probably smart watches – have more bacteria on them than toilet seats? I’m starting to think that the safest place to store anything might actually be in the toilet!)

CANINE PATROL:
➢ Honest Paws is offering up a job that pays $100 an hour – for dogs. The pet wellness company is looking for canines that can be ambassadors for its peanut butter. The job description includes strutting about local dog parks, canine events, and pet stores, as well as “showing off your love for our yummy Honest Paws Peanut Butter”, and being “the star of live treat-tasting shows.” Job requirements include “bark-tastic social skills” and a tail that “won’t stop wagging.” Successful applicants must also have a human who can accompany them to events, and help with “tricky stuff” — like opening peanut butter jars. Applications close on September 1. (Funny. I have an uncle who makes $100 an hour – and he’s not capable of opening a peanut butter jar, either!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4pppvvee
➢ I love this! Research shows that petting other people’s dogs can improve your well-being. According to accumulating findings, human-dog contact increases the production of oxytocin (the “love hormone”) while reducing the production of cortisol (the primary stress hormone). And you only need 5-20 minutes of interaction with other people’s (friendly) dogs to reduce stress and boost your health. And it’s not just us. Scientists report they observe the same response in dogs, when we shower them with affection. (That’s awesome! All the benefits of owning a dog – but no poop-bags!)

DID YOU KNOW?
If your child plays football, and you’re worried about concussions, don’t let them play quarterback. Researchers at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center and Penn State University came up with a system to rate which positions face the highest risk of brain injury through brain biomarkers, and determined the chance of sustaining a concussion to be much higher for players in “speed positions” such as quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs, running backs…“and other players who build up momentum prior to tackling…or being tackled, compared to non-speed positions like offensive and defensive linemen who engage other players before significant momentum can be generated.”

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade & Its Abolition”, designated by UNESCO in 1998 as an annual observance to reflect on “the historic causes, the methods, and the consequences of the slave trade”.
• “Hug Your Sweetheart Day”, an annual excuse to let your beloved know that he or she is always there in your fondest thoughts. Gag.
• “Sponge Cake Day”, celebrating the fat-free dessert that’s based on flour, sugar, and eggs. It has a firm yet well-aerated structure, similar to a sea sponge. (And is no good until it is covered with icing, whip cream, ice cream, or all 3!)
• “Buttered Corn Day”, are you a butter spreader or full cob roller? (Depends on who’s looking?)
• “Internaut Day”. No one’s sure exactly why we celebrate it Aug. 23, but today’s the day we celebrate the invention of the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web and the internet are distinct from each other, and an “internaut” is a person who has a deep knowledge of how to use the internet, as well as of its history. (Anyone know the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web?)
• “Ride the Wind Day”, a day to soar above the earth or catch a ride with the breeze. Here are some great ways to enjoy Ride the Wind Day:
-Fly in an airplane
-Fly a kite
-Parachute
-Bungee jump
-Hang glide
-Ride a motorcycle
-Hop in a sailboat (or forget to do up your zipper?)

BULL’S BITS

BS WHACK FACTS:
✓ Wind doesn’t make a sound until it blows against an object.
✓ Rainbows are actually circular. We don’t typically see a full circle rainbow because the Earth’s horizon blocks the lower part.
✓ There are 12 times more trees on Earth than stars in the Milky Way (at least there were before this year’s wildfire season…).
✓ The fedora hat was originally made for women.
✓ The most successful pirate in history was a woman.
✓ The wealthy in Russia sometimes hire fake ambulances instead of taxis for a faster and more convenient way of getting to a destination.
