BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Jennifer Lopez has her sights set on a new home following her split with Ben Affleck, and it’s a famous piece of L.A. real estate. TMZ quotes sources as saying J Lo is close to striking a deal to buy the Azria Estate in Holmby Hills. The 30,000-square-foot estate is listed for $55 million, and she’s said to be trying to negotiate the price down to somewhere in the $30 millions. The home, once owned by late BCBG owner Max Azria, has 14 bedrooms and sits on a 3-acre lot with gardens, a greenhouse, a guest house and an infinity pool with a sauna, plus an in-home theater and game room. Sources say J Lo has taken several tours of the place over the last few weeks. The estate served as a filming location for her movie “Atlas”.

★ Tom Cruise pulled off an impressive stunt at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony, and you won’t believe how much he was paid: Nothing. Casey Wasserman, chairman of the LA2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said that Cruise was all for his jump from the Stade du France to accept the official Olympic flag from LA Mayor Karen Bass and Olympian Simone Biles. He then (a-hem!) “cruised” through Paris on a motorcycle, and boarded a plane, only to skydive into an area near the Hollywood sign in LA in a pre-recorded segment. Wasserman said his committee thought they’d get Cruise to film part of the video, and “have the thing done” by stunt professionals. But “about 5 minutes into the presentation (Cruise) goes ‘I’m in. But I’m only doing it if I get to do everything.’” And he not only did it all, he did it for free.

★ With little more than a slap on the wrist, Justin Timberlake now will NOT face drunk driving charges, thanks to a plea deal. Under the agreement, the singer will enter a guilty plea of a traffic violation, a far lesser charge. Additionally, Timberlake will pay a fine of around $300-500, depending on what a judge decides today. The plea deal sees the initial Driving While Intoxicated misdemeanor charge dropped. That charge carried a maximum of one year behind bars and a $2500 fine. Instead, he’ll accept punishment for Driving While Ability Impaired. Timberlake will still not be able to drive in New York for almost a year, as a result of refusing a breathalyzer.

★ Michael B. Jordan is following in the footsteps of Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan. He’ll star in and direct a remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair”. The new project reunites Jordan with MGM after the release of his directorial debut “Creed III,” which was a hit last year. Released in 1968 and directed by Norman Jewison, The Thomas Crown Affair starred McQueen as an art thief who falls in love with an insurance investigator, played by Faye Dunaway, who was hired to track him down. John McTiernan directed a remake in 1999 starring Brosnan and Rene Russo.
-TheWrap
★ Jeff Bridges had one name in mind that he wanted to be called when he became a granddad, but it didn’t turn out exactly how he imagined. On “Good Morning America”, the “Big Lebowski” star was asked about the name his grandkids call him, to which he responded: “I wanted them to call me Dude Pa, but they’ve shortened that down to just ‘Dudie’”. He added: “I hope it’s Howdy Doody and not dog doody! Anyway, I’m Dudie, man!”

STRANGE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ARE CONSIDERED BAD LUCK:
(Yes, Friday the 13thcan be daunting, but in some cultures, so are these…)
⇒ Wishing someone ‘Happy Birthday’ before their birthday:Many Germans believe doing so will cause misfortune to everyone involved. Instead, they sometimes gather the night before a birthday and begin celebrating exactly at midnight. (But I like to celebrate my birthday WEEK!)
⇒ Changing your bed on a Friday: An old wives’ tales says if you turn your mattress that day, you’ll be cursed with bad dreams. Others say the bad-luck day is Sunday. (Let’s just not do that anywhere near the weekend, OK?)
⇒ Carrying bananas on a ship: In the 1700s, many ships that were lost or shipwrecked were carrying bananas, so sailors, being a superstitious bunch, decided that bananas on a boat meant bad news. (I’d be much more worried about banana PEELS on a boat, but…)
⇒ Renaming a boat: This goes back to ancient times, when sailors believed that the name of every boat was written in the ledger of Poseidon. If you dared change the name of a boat, you’d incur the sea god’s wrath. (Still, if you happen to buy a boat named “Titanic”, I’d change it…)
⇒ Mixing beers: In the Czech Republic, whose people drink more beer per capita than anyone, it’s believed that if you pour one type of beer into a mug containing another type, you’re in for some misfortune. (Especially if the guy whose beer you just stole is bigger than you…!)
⇒ Tuesday the 13th: While many cultures see Friday the 13th as bad news, in Spain, the 13th day of the month is unlucky when it falls on a Tuesday. In Spanish, the word for Tuesday is “Martes,” which comes from “Mars”, the Roman god of war, so Tuesday spells trouble.
(My psychic told me I’d have bad luck until I was 30. And after that I’d get used to it!)

SPEAKING IN CURSIVE:
While swearing is most definitely not an acceptable thing to do in some situations, it is, on the other hand, a perfectly natural part of any language. In fact, letting curse words fly has been linked to things like intelligence, honesty, and increased pain tolerance. And a new analysis of tweets by language blog Wordtips has revealed the world’s most (and least) profane nations — at least among those who post in English…
1. United States – (41.6 tweets per 1000 contain profanity)
2. United Kingdom (28.6)
3. Australia (26.6)
4. New Zealand (25.2)
5. Canada (24.6)
6. Mexico (24.5)
7. Jamaica (23.7)
8. Colombia (22.6)
9. Dominican Republic (22)
10. Egypt (21.9)
The least-swearing countries, all in the Middle East, are: Kuwait (3.6 tweets per 1000), followed by Lebanon and Saudia Arabia.
(…probably because they’ve never heard of [***local bad sports team***]!)
(In defense of the USA, this IS an election year…!)

Billboard has unveiled its 2024 “Songs of the Summer” chart. The list tracks the most popular tunes in the US, based on the streaming, airplay and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Here are the top-10…
1. ‘I Had Some Help’ – Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen (14 weeks at #1)
2. ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy) — Shaboozey
3. ‘Not Like Us – Kendrick Lamar
4. ‘Espresso’ – Sabrina Carpenter
5. ‘Million Dollar Baby’ – Tommy Richman
6. ‘Please Please Please’ – Sabrina Carpenter
7. ‘Too Sweet’ — Hozier
8. ‘Lose Control’ – Teddy Swims
9. ‘Birds of a Feather’ – Billie Eilish
10. ‘Beautiful Things’ – Benson Boone
Last year’s Song of the Summer was Morgan Wallen’s ‘Last Night’. Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’ took the crown in 2022.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A man who jokingly placed an ad offering to spoil couples’ weddings has turned his prank into a business. Spaniard Ernesto Reinares’ unexpected career shift happened after he posted an online ad reading: “If you have doubts or don’t want to get married and don’t know how to refuse, don’t worry…I’ll object to your wedding.” The self-proclaimed “wedding destroyer” continued: “Tell me the time, place, and date. For EUR 500 (US$550), I’ll come to your wedding and get it called off.” Things quickly turned serious when he was inundated with responses, so he made it his job, promising to “show up at the ceremony, claim to be the love of your life, and we’ll leave hand in hand.” He’s booked through the end of the year. Oh, and while 500 Euros is his going rate, the wedding crasher charges extra if he is attacked by angry guests – which does sometimes happen. (I wonder how many fathers-of-the-bride are the ones doing the hiring!)
➢ A lifeboat crew in England responded to a report of a stranded person in the water — but left feeling like dummies. In a social media post, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution crew stationed in Filey said that once on the scene, the team “recovered a training dummy from the water.” The dummy turned out to have been lost by another RNLI crew in Hartlepool 2 weeks earlier. On Facebook, the Hartlepool crew thanked the Filey station for finding their dummy, named Fred, writing: “So Fred’s had an unauthorized holiday to Yorkshire”. (Is part of their training that when they can’t find someone, they simply give up and go home?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Those afraid of Friday the 13th experience different symptoms, ranging mild anxiety to complete panic attacks. Many avoid going to work, traveling, or making big purchases. In fact, US businesses lose about $900 million on the dreaded date. But these fears are unfounded. A study by the Dutch Centre for Insurance Statistics revealed that fewer traffic accidents occur on Friday the 13th than on other Fridays. The number of fires and thefts reported is also much lower. And for the brave, today may prove to be extremely lucky. Retailers often offer discounts to encourage people to shop.

BS CHRONOMETER 09.13.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Friday the 13th”, a bad day for those who suffer ‘triskaidekaphobia’ – fear of number 13, or ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’ — fear of Friday the 13th. Every year has at least 1, but never more than 3. (By the way, the 1940 bombing of Buckingham Palace and the 1996 death of Tupac Shakur each occurred on a Friday the 13th…)
• “Defy Superstition Day”, a day to stare down your superstitions. So, walk under a ladder, break a mirror, let a black cat cross your path, open an umbrella indoors, and do all those other things that many think are bad luck. (Although I think it’s also bad luck to believe in superstitions…)
• “Fortune Cookie Day”, celebrating the tasty little treat with a slip of paper inside that brings you good luck, a whimsical saying, or a philosophical thought. It’s thought they were invented in San Francisco around 1914 (How ‘fortunate’ that it’s also “Defy Superstition Day”!)
• “Blame Someone Else Day”, taking place on the first Friday the 13th of each year, today is a day when anything that goes wrong can be blamed on someone else. (Or someTHING else?)
• “Skeptics Day”, occurs each Friday the 13th, as well as every US Election Day. (Or DOES it?)
• “International Chocolate Day”, celebrating ‘the greatest substance known to humanity’. It’s a day for indulgence that should be free of guilt (…until you get on the scale tomorrow morning!).
• “Peanut Day”. They’re not really nuts at all, but ‘legumes’ (edible seeds enclosed in pods). Legumes provide the best source of concentrated protein in the plant kingdom (and how perfect is it that it’s also Chocolate Day?).
• “Stand Up To Cancer Day”. Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) is an organization that brings together scientists around the world to collaborate on cancer research. It raises funds and awareness of how everyone is affected by cancer in some way. LINK: https://standuptocancer.org/
• “Bald is Beautiful Day”, a day that we can stop hiding and finally start celebrating the thing that haunts many of us. Today, being bald is beautiful. There will be no hats, crooked toupees, or cover ups of any sort. Let it shine!
• “Positive Thinking Day”. It’s all about attitude … a positive attitude. (And I’m positive this is never gonna fly…)
• “Roald Dahl Day”, He’s best-known as a beloved storyteller. In books like “Matilda”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, and “James and the Giant Peach”, Dahl brought readers into his wildly original imagination with richly detailed worlds, zany characters, and touching storylines.
• “Snack a Pickle Day”, there are many types of pickles to try:
-Bread and butter—part of sweet family of pickles; has onions and bell peppers; sometimes have a waffle-esque shape.
-Cinnamon – bright red and flavored with cinnamon; sometimes a Christmas treat.
-Dill – made with dill herbs or dill oil.
-Gherkins – smaller and usually sweeter.
-Kool-aid – soaked in Kool-aid and pickle brine.
-Kosher dill – dill pickle with lots of garlic in the salt brine.
-Polish – somewhere between kosher dill and sour.
-Sour – fermented longer in brine, which makes them more sour.
-Sweet – usually made with vinegar, spices, and sugar; includes sliced sweet pickles, or “cross cuts”, which are cut crosswise into chips.

SATURDAY:
• Parents Day Off Day”, founded in 2021 to show appreciation for parents, and encourage them to take a much-deserved break. Once school starts, parents should have a bit of time to take a breather. Taking time for yourself benefits you and the entire family. (Day off? Maybe a half-hour…)
• “Cream-Filled Donut Day” … a holiday for cops? Donuts can be filled with such delicious additions as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, and lemon. (Why eat a regular donut when you can replace the empty space of the hole with delicious cream…or caramel…for the same price??)
• “Eat a Hoagie Day”, celebrating the super-sized sandwich also known as a sub, grinder, hero, Italian sandwich, po’ boy, wedge, zeppelin, or torpedo. What’s the best combo?
• “National Coloring Day”, not to be confused with National Coloring Book Day, which is observed in August. Today is about adding a splash of color to your life, with or without coloring books. (Crayons are just like M&Ms . . . they taste the same no matter what color they are!)
• “Gobstopper Day”. Also commonly called jawbreakers, they are hard candies—so hard that they can’t safely be bitten into. They are usually round, between 1-3cm in diameter, but can be larger. Gobstoppers consist of layers that are different colors, and sometimes different flavors.
• “Live Creative Day”. Today, take the time to invent, discover and dream. Incorporating creativity, through anything from painting and graphic art to music and gardening, has a positive impact on our lives. (The only thing I’m capable of creating is an excuse!)
• “World Hearing Voices Day”, for those who receive advice, encouragement, and even laughter from others … who aren’t really there. (Something tells me you should visit this website: https://www.intervoiceonline.org/world-hearing-voices-day#content )

SUNDAY:
• “Google.com Day”. Google was founded on September 4th 1998; however, it was registered as a domain on this day in 1997, 26 years ago. (Who says “Google.com”?)
• “Greenpeace Day”, honoring the 1971 founding of the internationally renowned environmental organization. A group of 17 activists initially formed in Vancouver BC to protest offshore nuclear testing in Alaska.
• “Someday”. How many tasks have you put off, saying you’ll get to them “someday”? Well, guess what? Time’s up. Someday is here. Get to work!
• “Double Cheeseburger Day”. The first double cheeseburger is said to have been thought of by someone at a California restaurant called “Bob’s Big Boy” in 1937. (A big, greasy thumbs up to him/her!)
• “Thank You Day”, a day to encourage kindness to those who let others go ahead of them in line, or hold doors open for strangers, or give gifts, or speak words of encouragement. But don’t just thank them today – thank them whenever you have a chance!
• “International Day of Democracy”, a UN observance since 2007, encouraging the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social, and cultural systems.
• “International Dot Day”, to encourage people of all ages to harness their creativity. The inspiration is the children’s book “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. It tells the tale of a teacher who challenges a pupil to take courage in her abilities, and from a dot on a page, the youngster goes on to make her mark.
• “Women’s Friendship Day 2014”, celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of September since 1999 by the Kappa Delta Sorority, who remind us: “Men come and go, but girlfriends are forever!”
• Today is also “Wife Appreciation Day” and National Neighborhood Day”.
