★ Sydney Sweeney will star alongside Amanda Seyfried in a film adaptation of the bestselling Freida McFadden book “The Housemaid.” In the thriller, Sweeney will play ‘Millie’, a struggling young woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to ‘Nina’ (Seyfried) and ‘Andrew’, an upscale, wealthy couple. But she soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own. Paul Feig, the filmmaker behind “Bridesmaids” and “Ghostbusters,” will direct.

★ Mario Lopez will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. In addition to hosting “Access Hollywood” and “Access Daily with Mario & Kit,” the 2-time Emmy-winner is the host of 2 nationwide radio shows and a boxing podcast. BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Kendrick Lamar – His Drake-diss track ‘Not Like Us’ has set a record with an unprecedented 21st week at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart. The single surpassed the 20 weeks spent atop the chart by 2019’s ‘Old Town Road’ from Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.
• Billie Eilish – shares in a November cover story for Vogue that she regrets being candid about her attraction to women in an interview last year. Quote: “I’m never talking about my sexuality ever again, and I’m never talking about who I’m dating ever again.”
• Bruce Springsteen – plans to attend 2 special screenings of his upcoming documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.” The movie will be part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Screening Series. Screenings in New York on Oct. 15 and in LA on Oct. 21 will feature a conversation with Springsteen, his manager Jon Landau and the film’s director, Thom Zimny.
• Kiss — is working on a 5-part documentary about their farewell tour. Paul Stanley revealed the news on social media, posting a pic of his wife Erin being interviewed for the series. “The End of the Road” tour ran from 2019 through Dec. 2023, and included 250 shows. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/djxkzmrf
• The Doors — Next year marks the group’s 60th anniversary, and there are plans for multiple releases to mark the occasion. These include a series of archival releases, the first of which will drop on Nov. 22 for Record Store Day Black Friday: “The Doors – Live in Detroit” will be available on vinyl for the first time. It features a performance from Cobo Arena on May 8, 1970. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bde45hea
• Luke Bryan – How close is he to new fellow “American Idol” judge Carrie Underwood? His answer: “Aside from just saying hey and doing a couple of songs together on stage, we’ve never really got to hang out and visit in-depth.” Bryan said that he actually hangs with Underwood’s husband, Mike, more than he has ever hung out with Carrie, but the 3 Idol judges plan to get together for dinner soon.
• ERNEST – His new single ‘Would If I Could’ was written in the 1993 and spent most of the last 30 years waiting for someone to record it. It was written by successful country songwriters of the era Dean Dillon (‘Tennessee Whiskey’) and Skip Ewing (‘You Had Me From Hello’). George Strait passed on the song back in the day, then it was untouched until a 2023 Lainey Wilson version for Apple Music’s Lost & Found.
• Billy Strings – The Lansing MI native’s “Highway Prayers” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums chart, and at the top of the all-genre Top Album Sales tally. It also entered the Top Country Albums chart at #8.
• Morgan Wallen – is steering clear of chairs these days. In Tampa, he stuck around after his show while the stage crew picked up items from fans for him to sign. In the sea items thrown onto the stage, a chair was passed to him. Video shows Wallen noticeably avoiding it.

SHOOTING THE BULL

TWO, PLEASE:
A group of scientists in the UK say they have a come up with a great way to encourage the public to cut back on excessive drinking – the only problem is that “the public” wants nothing to do with it. As you may know, the 20-ounce pint is embedded in British pub culture. But research, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, suggested that offering two-thirds of a pint as the largest size available could have a positive health impact nationwide. The idea was based on the idea that people tend to think in portions rather than portion sizes, as in grabbing ‘one beer’ or ‘one glass of wine’, rather than debating milliliters or ounces. And in a trial, beer sales fell 9.7% with the smaller beer sizes. But we don’t think the idea is going to stick: Of 1,700 pubs approached to take part in the study, only 12 agreed. And not only did sales tail off – so did earnings. Even the researchers agreed that while there is a potential health benefit to reducing standard beer sizes, neither pub owners nor politicians are likely to pursue the matter further.
(OK – now THIS is taking shrinkflation a step too far!)
(For MY friends, what they need to do is reduce the size of KEGS, not glasses!)

SCIENTISTS SAY:
❑ Today is “Depression Screening Day”, and as you know, early detection can be a game-changer when it comes to treating matters of mental health. And your phone might soon be a powerful tool for spotting the early warning signs of depression. Scientists from Stevens Institute of Technology have developed two innovative AI-powered smartphone apps that could revolutionize how we detect mental health issues. The first app, called PupilSense, works by taking snapshots of your eyes while you’re using your phone, and was found to be 76% accurate in identifying times when users felt depressed. The second app, called FacePsy, examines your facial expressions to gain insight into your mood. The developers say that unlike other AI systems for detecting depression, which often require special devices, these smartphone-based apps offer a more convenient and less intrusive option. (Remind me not to use those things when checking my banking app!)
❑ A new study suggests sugary fruit juices and fizzy drinks may be linked to a higher likelihood of strokes. The findings, from global research studies by University of Galway and McMaster University Canada, found that both fizzy ‘soda pop’ beverages, either with sugar or artificially sweetened, increase stroke risk by 22%, and fruit juices by 37%. And bad news for coffee lovers, too: It was also found that drinking more than 4 cups of per day also appears to increase stroke risk. The good news is that those who enjoy sparkling water can sip easy, since this study refers specifically to sugary drinks. (Yeah, I’ll be adding that stuff to my coffee from now on!)

MUSIC ‘STUDY’:
Music seems to surround us, no matter where we go throughout the day. And as meaningful and uplifting as it is, science also shows that it can help you while working on a project, studying, and doing homework, because it is capable of increasing your focus and even motivating you. Although results may vary according to the individual, research has given us these guidelines, in case you like to have tunes in the background as you carry out a mentally demanding task:
• Instrumental or familiar music in the background competes (or distracts) less with a study assignment than songs with lyrics or unfamiliar music. Instrumental music also seems to interfere less with reading.
• Soft, fast music has a positive impact on learning, but loud and fast, loud and slow, and soft and slow music all hinder learning.
• Upbeat music may help when you’re doing something requiring movement or motivation, such as exercising or cleaning your room.
• The more difficult your task is – for instance, memorizing material, problem-solving, or learning something new – the more likely that music will be distracting.
(Ah – Just like trying to find a street address when driving!)
(So, what they’re saying is that Taylor Swift can even help with your homework? Is there anything she CAN’T do?)

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a survey, using an Android phone could be impacting your dating life. In a summer poll of 1,000 anonymous phone users by All About Cookies, 22% of iPhone users admitted they look down on those sending non-iMessage texts, and nearly 23% of iPhone users said finding out a potential romantic interest is an Android user would be a total dealbreaker. 31% of men said they’d swipe left on an Android user, while 16% of women felt the same. The same survey found that 52% of Android users have been made fun of for their device. (Well, it’s not an “Apple to Apple” comparison, is it?)

BS CHRONOMETER 10.10.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Metric Day”, celebrating the system of measurement based on multiples of 10. For that reason, Metric Day is celebrated on 10/10. Flemish mathematician Simon Stevin first suggested such a system in 1586, centuries before the metric system became an accepted form of measurement.
• “Angel Food Cake Day”, honoring the dessert every starving dieter touts as being ‘fat-free’ … just before inhaling it in its entirety. (With a ton of high-fat whip cream!)
• “International Stage Management Day”, celebrating all the work that stage managers do in theaters and on film sets. (Like referees, if you don’t notice them, they’re doing a great job!)
• “World Homeless Day”, to draw attention to the needs of the homeless and provide opportunities for communities to get involved in responding.
• “World Mental Health Day”, a day for mental health education and awareness. It was first celebrated in 1992 as an initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, which operates in more than 150 countries. It’s also “Depression Screening Day”.
• “World Porridge Day”, a celebration of Scotland’s traditional national dish. It began in the wee Scottish Highlands village of Carrbridge (home of the annual “World Porridge Making Championship”) as a fundraiser to feed needy children. So…how do you like your gruel? (I like mine not too hot, not too cold…but JUST RIGHT!)
• “Hug a Drummer Day”, a day to celebrate drummers, the percussionists who keep the rhythm and beat of music, but are usually the least-celebrated bandmembers. And because we never miss a chance to tell them, here are our favorite drummer jokes:
➢ How can you tell when a drummer is at the door? [The knocking speeds up. Then he doesn’t know when to come in.]
➢ How can you tell when the stage riser is level? [The drool comes out of both sides of the drummer’s mouth.]
➢ What do you call a drummer who breaks up with his girlfriend? [Homeless.]
➢ What’s the last thing a drummer says in a band? [“Hey guys, why don’t we try one of my songs?”]
➢ [***CAUTION***] What’s the difference between a podiatrist and a drummer? [A podiatrist bucks up your feet…]
➢ And the all-time classic: What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians? [A drummer.]
