BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The Los Angeles area continues to be devastated by raging wildfires. At least 5 fires are continuing to spread throughout the county, and the fire in the Pacific Palisades has caused much of the devastation, having torn through almost 27 square miles. It is here that many celebrities have lost their homes. Among them is Melissa Rivers, who just managed to save her lare mother Joan Rivers’ Emmy award. Anna Faris has also lost her home, it has been confirmed. Billy Crystal’s home with Janice Crystal, his wife of over 50 years, has burned. Other celebs reeling after the loss of their homes include Ricki Lake, “All My Children’s” Cameron Mathison, singer Diane Warren, “Dirty Dancing’s” Jennifer Grey, as well as Paris Hilton, who watched her Malibu home burn live during a news broadcast. Spencer Pratt & Heidi Montag shared that their home burned, as did TV chef Sandra Lee. John Goodman, Eugene Levy, James Woods, Anthony Hopkins, Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, and Cary Elwes are also among the stars who have lost their homes in the fires.

★ The Producers Guild Awards nominations have been postponed from today to tomorrow. The organization said in a statement: “Due to LA County wildfires, the Producers Guild of America will be extending the voting window for the PGA Awards by 2 days until Saturday, January 11 to allow members additional time to cast their ballots. The official PGA Awards nominations will now be announced on Sunday, January 12.” This decision follows the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ extension of its Oscar nomination voting period by 2 days. The Oscars also shifted the announcement of the 97th nominations from Jan. 17 to Jan. 19.

★ The Critics Choice Awards, set for Sunday evening in Santa Monica, have been postponed amid devastating fires raging across the Los Angeles area. Critics Choice Association COO Joey Berlin said that further details will be forthcoming. The Critics Choice Awards are among many award-related events affected in the wake of the fires. Wednesday morning’s SAG Awards nomination live announcement was also scrapped, with the nods unveiled instead via a press release. The annual starry AFI Awards luncheon on Jan. 10 is being rescheduled, while the annual BAFTA Tea Party set for Jan. 11 in Beverly Hills will no longer take place.
-Variety
★ “Wicked” has topped nominations to the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards, landing a leading 5 nods, including best ensemble, and individual nominations for Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey. The best male lead nominees were largely as expected: Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), Daniel Craig (“Queer”), Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) and Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”). Demi Moore is among the nominees for best female actor in a leading role for “The Substance”, joined by Erivo, “Emilia Pérez” breakout Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison of “Anora” and Pamela Anderson for “The Last Showgirl.” Wicked saw its Oscar chances rise with the SAG news, which is one of the most predictive Academy Awards bellwethers. The other nominees for best ensemble are: “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “A Complete Unknown.” SAGs will be handed out on Feb. 23.

★ The results are in, and while Netflix‘s premiere of “Monday Night Raw” was up over the spectacle’s average audience on USA Network, it’s probably too soon to call it a heavyweight champ. Monday’s episode averaged 2.6M households live + same-day in the U.S., according to data from VideoAmp. That’s up from Raw’s 2024 average of 1.2M households per episode, and higher than any other Raw broadcast in the last 5 years. However, it should be noted that USA Network reports viewership via Nielsen, so it’s not possible to make a direct comparison between the 2, due to different measurement methods. Within 24 hours of its inaugural Netflix broadcast, Raw was up to 4.9M viewers globally.

DRYUARY:
This is the month that thousands of people dread – and it’s not because the Christmas credit card bills are coming in. It’s “Dry January”, when many challenge themselves to lay off the booze for the entire month. The Dry January challenge started in 2013, when a charity in the UK decided to get people involved in creating a healthier relationship with alcohol. But Dry January may prove to be not very difficult at all, because many are already drinking less. US stats show that per capita alcohol consumption has dropped to its lowest level since 2002. And it’s younger people who are leading the way: The share of 18-34-year-olds who say they drink at all has fallen by 10% in the last 2 decades. And Dry January is more popular than ever, with web searches for the term in the first week of 2024 doubling, compared to a year earlier. And alcohol sales at 3 major US liquor chains plunged 52% in the first week of January last year. In fact, this month, many bars are now offering special ‘mocktails’ and other promotions, just to get people in the door.
(So…it turns out that Dry January doesn’t mean you’re only supposed to drink Chardonnay? Who knew?)
(But did someone REALLY have to come up with a way to make this month seem even LONGER??)

NEW FOOD NEWS:
❑ It’s the food mashup that if no one else has been waiting for, I sure have: Krispy Kreme has announced a collaboration with Pop-Tarts, which will introduce 3 new, zany options to the donut chain’s shelves, for a limited time. Each new donut in the “Crazy good” line reflects a favorite Pop-Tart flavor. The first is a frosted strawberry dipped in shortbread icing and stuffed with strawberry filling, with pieces of strawberry Pop-Tarts on top. Next is a frosted chocolate fudge donut with chocolate and browner batter buttercream, and crushed frosted chocolatey fudge Pop-Tarts. The third is a brown sugar cinnamon donut topped with a buttercream flavor, with brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese – and covered with frosted cinnamon roll Pop-Tarts. (Who’s gonna be the first to try to shove one of those things in the toaster?)
❑ Dry January or not, some people are definitely buzzing about a new line of non-alcoholic drinks that promise give you a…well, a “buzz”, without the dreaded hangover. The range of range of drinks from Sentia Spirits are designed to serve as an “effective alternative to drinking low levels of alcohol,” essentially tricking your brain’s internal chemistry into thinking you’re tipsy. Developer Professor David Nutt said it is “based on the science of alcohol, particularly the low doses of alcohol that relax you and make you more sociable.” Sentia Red is apparently designed to help you “chill out”, while Black is to “boost productivity”, and Gold is “to bring warmth and wellness to social gatherings”. (Pro tip: DO NOT mix that stuff with whiskey!) LINK: https://shorturl.at/0Fv7N

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A man who cut himself shaving has been awarded $6,250 compensation – after suing the razor company. Nick Silverthorn of London purchased a supermarket-brand razor from his local store. But according to him, when he used it for the first time, it cut both of his cheeks. He claims that one of the razor blades was detached and the razor was faulty. And incredibly, he was awarded an out of court settlement against Wilkinson Sword, the maker of the store brand razor. Silverthorn says his injury was “no ordinary shaving cut. It sliced my skin”, and caused him to bleed for over 20 minutes. The incident left him with scars on his cheeks and he said the trauma of being cut led to him having nightmares for months afterwards. (His after-shave probably stung a bit, too)
➢ A man in California who was pulled over shortly after the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1 was apparently so hammered that he told cops “I’m the DUI”, rather than the “DD” (designated driver). A Murrieta Police Department officer pulled him over after noticing him swerving across the roadway. Body cam footage shows the man telling the cop: “I was just dropping off my friend because I’m the DUI tonight.” After being corrected by the officer, the driver admitted to drinking some champagne and beer. He nearly fell over multiple times during sobriety tests and was taken to jail – for DUI. (…where he may or may not have gotten a New Year’s kiss!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Living close to an airport could land you in hospital. A new study found that constant exposure to airplane noise, especially at night, can lead to stiffer and thicker heart muscles that can double or quadruple the risk of a heart attack, life-threatening heart rhythm or stroke. The researchers from University College London also pointed out that 40 million Americans reside near major airports. (The good news? If you live near an airport and wind up in hospital, at least the parking there is cheaper!)

BS CHRONOMETER 01.10.25
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Houseplant Appreciation Day”, a day to salute their therapeutic value in lifting your mood and outlook. And if you’re a gardener, they give you an opportunity to play in the dirt until Spring arrives in the seemingly far, far, distant future. (No, thanks. I already take care of a few things that sit around the house all day doing nothing: Teenagers.)
• “Bittersweet Chocolate Day”, the kind you can eat with less guilt because it has less sugar. And unlike milk chocolate or white chocolate, it doesn’t contain any milk solids.
• “Cut Your Energy Costs Day”, a day to help both the environment and your bottom line. So, what’s your best tip? (I removed the light bulb in the fridge…until my wife found out!)
• “Peculiar People Day”, to celebrate the leaders of the strange and unusual, those who refuse to succumb to the world’s idea of what is normal. Which is great, until you find out that they mean YOU! (***Ask listeners to tell about the extraordinary, unusual, strange, odd, uncommon, intriguing, different, abnormal, and quirky people they know***)
• “Save the Eagles Day”. Some species of eagles are on the endangered list. But thanks to the work of scientists and the public, although still “protected”, the Bald Eagle was removed from the endangered list in 2007.
• “Oysters Rockefeller Day”. This dish consists of oysters on the half-shell that have been topped with a rich sauce of butter, parsley and other green herbs, and bread crumbs, then baked or broiled. Lemon wedges are the typical garnish. After its invention in 1889, the dish was named after John D. Rockefeller, then the wealthiest American, for its extreme “richness”.
SATURDAY:
• “Hot Toddy Day”, saluting the traditional drink taken before retiring for the night, or in wet or cold weather. It’s typically a mixture of liquor and water with honey (or, in some recipes, sugar), herbs (such as tea) and spices, and served piping hot. Some believe it relieves the symptoms of cold and flu. (Or at least makes you forget them…)
• “Milk Day”, although I’d much rather have a hot toddy!
• “International Thank-You Day”, a chance to thank someone from your past who did something nice for you. (I’d like to take a moment to say thank you to those who have lent me money…I’ll never be able to repay you!)
• “Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day”, in case you want to embrace a technology that has pretty much disappeared. Dash-dot-dot-dot … dot-dot-dash … dot-dash-dot-dot …
• “Human Trafficking Awareness Day”, drawing attention to efforts to eradicate modern-day slavery around the world. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/47t5trcb
• “Cigarettes are Hazardous to Your Health Day”. Did we really need a day to tell us this?
• “Secret Pal Day”. Almost everyone has special friend who they trust with their deepest secrets. Secret pals provide relief from our emotional baggage and mental stress. Because keeping secrets is detrimental to our health, a secret pal is therefore a preventive health measure.
• Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend Day”. Remember when you were a kid and would get yelled at every time you accidentally stepped in — or purposely jumped in — a puddle? Today, you have an excuse to do just that…and soak a friend at the same time. (But really…in January?)
SUNDAY:
• “Stick to Your New Year’s Resolution Day”. More power to you if you’ve made it this far!
• “International Kiss a Ginger Day”, invented in 2009 as a response to the obviously problematic “Kick a Ginger Day”. Today, you’re encouraged to pucker up and plant one on a redhead (um…with permission, of course!) Here are some famous gingers…
✓ Movie star Emma Stone (“La La Land”)
✓ Movie actress Amy Adams (“Arrival”)
✓ Podcast host/former TV host Conan O’Brien (“Conan”)
✓ Movie actress Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”)
✓ Movie actress Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”)
✓ Brit ex-royal Prince Harry
✓ Pop star Ed Sheeran (‘Shape of You”)
✓ Former/upcoming US President Donald Trump (same color as his face?)
• “Pharmacist Day”, honoring your friendly-neighborhood (legal) drug dealers…
BS SIGNS YOUR PHARMACIST IS NUTS:
☞ Counts out pills: “One for you, two for me . . .”
☞ Says he can’t read the doc’s writing, so he’ll have to take a guess.
☞ Writes on the pill bottle: “Take a bunch a couple times a day.”
☞ Makes people with high blood pressure wait longer in line.
☞ Every day at 5pm, he yells “Happy Hour!”
☞ Wears a shirt that says “A day without Prozac is like . . . Depressing, man”.
• “Marzipan Day”, celebrating the sweet, mold-able treat made mostly from sugar and almond meal or paste. It can end up looking like a big ball of Play Doh that you can color with food coloring and then form into different shapes.
• “Curried Chicken Day”. It’s a very popular dish in Asia, the UK, and the Caribbean. The word “curry” is an anglicized version of the Tamil word “kari,” which means “stir-fried.”
• “Hot Tea Day”, celebrating the rich culture and history, diverse types, health benefits, and soothing qualities of tea, and encouraging ‘tea-totalers’ “to raise their cups in honor of the beloved beverage.”
• “No Pants Subway Ride”. This annual public participation event began in NYC in 2002, then spread to subway systems worldwide. This year, pranksters are expected to drop trou in 150 cities, including Chicago, London, Sydney, Toronto, Washington, and Vancouver. What’s the point? Fun! LINK: https://tinyurl.com/36b5m28r
