We’ve gone Bullistic!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
[***UPDATE***] ★ Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78. Born in the affluent Hampstead area of London in 1946, she was known for hits like ‘As Tears Go By’, which reached the UK top 10 in 1964, and for starring roles in films including 1968’s “The Girl On A Motorcycle.” She was also famously the girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in the 1960s, inspiring songs such as ‘Wild Horses’ and ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’. After a period of heroin addiction in the 70s, she resurrected her career with the classic album “Broken English”. Paying tribute, Jagger described Faithfull as “a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress,” saying he was “so saddened”.

★ Netflix previewed its 2025 film slate at the “Next on Netflix” event in LA, and revealed release dates for some of its biggest titles of the year. In addition to Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” (with Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth and Jacob Elordi) in November, Fall 2025 will see the release of Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly” starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, Joe Carnahan’s “RIP” led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, an untitled Kathryn Bigelow thriller with Idris Elba, and the third “Knives Out” whodunnit “Wake Up Dead Man” starring Daniel Craig , with Glenn Close, Josh Brolin and Mila Kunis. Among the streamer’s scheduled documentary subjects are Osama Bin Laden, the Manson murders and the Titan submarine.
-Deadline
★ “Squid Game” is returning to Netflix sooner than you might have thought. The Korean smash will return for its third and final season on June 27, following the major cliffhanger that Season 2 ended on. The June return is just 6 months after season 2 launched on the streamer on Boxing Day. While many expected the dystopian drama to show up again around Christmas, the fact that seasons 2 and 3 were filmed at the same time has allowed Netflix to brink it back quickly. The move could also bolster Squid Game’s Emmy chances, as the third season will be airing during the voting window for the second season, much like “The Bear” last year.
-Deadline
★ Harvey Weinstein begged a New York judge to move up his retrial date, claiming he’s in poor health and doesn’t know “how much longer I can hold on.” A frail Weinstein was rolled into court in a wheelchair, where he told the Manhattan Supreme Court judge that he was requesting a speedy retrial of his 2020 conviction on rape and sexual assault charges, which was overturned last year after it was ruled he didn’t receive a fair trial. Weinstein also claimed he “won’t be there” for the scheduled start on April 15 if he is consigned to remain on Rikers Island.
-People
★ Jake Gyllenhaal will star in M. Night Shyamalan next film. Reports say that the so-far unnamed project is a supernatural romantic thriller, based on an original story co-created by Shyamalan and bestselling novelist Nicholas Sparks. Shyamalan and Sparks are independently writing a screenplay and a novel, respectively, based on the same original love story. It’ll Shyamalan’s second time making a feature from literary material, after adapting Paul Tremblay’s horror novel “The Cabin at the End of the World” into the 2023 apocalyptic thriller “Knock at the Cabin.”
-Deadline, Variety
★ “Little House on the Prairie” is getting a reboot. Netflix has greenlighted a new version of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic 1930s book series, after the 1970s drama enjoyed a stunning resurgence on Peacock recently. Rebecca Shonnenshine, known for her work on “The Boys”, will serve as showrunner. Little House on the Prairie was first adapted into a TV series in 1974, centering on the adventures of the Ingalls family, who lived on a farm in 1800s Minnesota. The show lasted 9 seasons, concluding on May 10, 1982.

DARING DAIRY?
Move over almond and soy milk – and whatever other kind of milk the trendy people are drinking these days. Because the next big daily alternative just might be – camel milk! New research from Edith Cowan University in Australia says camel milk could offer some impressive health benefits, especially for our immune systems. In their in-depth head-to-head comparison of cow vs. camel milk, the researchers found that camel milk contains distinctive proteins that could make it especially valuable for immune system support and gut health. The cream portion of camel milk was found to contain bioactive peptides that can help fight harmful bacteria and potentially protect against certain diseases. Additionally, camel milk contains lower lactose levels than cow’s milk, potentially making it easier to digest for some people.
Camel’s milk currently accounts for just 0.4% of global milk production.
(Also coming soon…the new Camel Caramel Macchiato!)
(Actually, all it would take for camel’s milk to become a thing even sooner is for there to be a nation-wide outbreak of bovine-flu!)

VACAY YAY AND NAY:
The good news is that Monday will mark the halfway point of winter. The bad news? You guessed it – Monday will mark just the halfway point of winter. But at least that gives us an excuse to start thinking of vacation time. And whether, for you, that involves a getaway to a beach locale while Old Man Winter is still raging, or you plan to hold off and use your time off in the summer, new research has revealed a simple way to improve your health and well-being while on vacation – and one bad habit to avoid. Psychologists from University of Georgia analyzed data from 32 countries, and not only found that vacations are more beneficial to the well-being of workers than they thought, they also determined that travelers who participate in physical activities experience higher levels of well-being and restoration. And all it takes is some kind of exercise that boosts the heart rate. With this in mind, a fitness trainer recommends packing resistance bands and doing 10-minute mini-workouts while you’re away. On the other hand, what is it that you SHOULDN’T be doing? Aside from spending your entire week in the buffet line or at the bar, the researchers say you should steer clear of work emails and calls while on vacation. They point out that vacations are one of the few opportunities we get to fully disconnect from work, and those who are able to do that showed the most improvement in their well-being, according to the analysis.
(But I CAN’T pack resistance bands. My suitcase is already full of snacks and excuses!)
(If I want to get my heart rate up while I’m away, I just follow my wife on one of her shopping excursions!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A man on what he called a “Carnivore diet” arrived at a Tampa hospital with an odd ooze emanating from yellowish nodes on the palms of his hands, elbows, and the soles of his feet. He told doctors that beginning 8 months earlier, his daily intake consisted of entire sticks of butter, 6-9 pounds of cheese — and hamburger patties. The patient insisted that since going full fat and all animal, he lost weight and saw improvements in his energy levels and cognitive functioning. The problem, though, was the painless but decidedly icky ooze that had been affecting him for a month. Butter man’s cholesterol level was found to exceed 1,000 mg/dL. For comparison, a healthy cholesterol level is under 200. Cardiologists diagnosed him with xanthelasma, a condition caused by high cholesterol levels, where excess lipids ooze from blood vessels and form localized deposits. Yes, he was seeping cholesterol. Unsurprisingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not endorse the carnivore diet. (Yes, you are what you eat – but no one mentioned you’d start leaking it!)
➢ A chunk of fossilized vomit dating back to the time of the dinosaurs has been discovered in Denmark. Fossil hunter Peter Bennicke found the…um…stuff at a coastal cliff not far from Copenhagen. The self-declared “fossil geek” took the fragments to be examined at the Museum of East Zealand, which confirmed the vomit could be dated to the end of the Cretaceous period 66 million years ago – when dinosaurs including Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops existed. The spew sample has already been classified by Denmark as an object of “exceptional natural historical value.” (Wow – that’s SICK! Literally…)

DID YOU KNOW?
If you plan to host a Sper Bowl viewing party next Sunday (Feb. 9) for 9 of your football-mad friends (and yourself), it’ll cost you about US$139. Store-bought Super Bowl snacks for 10 will set you back about the same amount as last year, according to a report from Wells Fargo. Their estimate included chips, guacamole, beer and chicken wings for a gang of 10. That total is just 10 cents more than last year’s price. (But if you’re serving eggs, all bets are off!)

BS CHRONOMETER 01.31.25

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Backwards Day”, a day to relieve Winter blahs by doing everything backwards, ie: calling people by their last name, eating meals in reverse, (***signing off your show at the beginning***), etc.  (Not to be confused with “Opposite Day”, which we celebrated last week. Actually…yes! It is very much to be confused with Opposite Day!)
• Fun At Work Day”, because experts say when we enjoy our work, we’re more productive. Here are a few suggestions for having fun at work . . .
✓ Find out where your boss shops, and buy the same exact outfits. Always wear them one day after your boss does. (Especially effective if your boss is of a different gender.)
✓ Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.
✓ Include a piece of your kid’s artwork as a cover page for all reports you write.
✓ When answering your phone, talk in a fake British accent.
✓ Make up corny nicknames for all your co-workers and refer to them only by these names. (“That’s a good point, Sparky.”)
✓ Take a picture of your boss, have it framed, and display it prominently on your desk.
✓ Leave the photocopy machine set to reduce 200%, extra dark, 17-inch paper, 99 copies.
✓ Send e-mail to the company DL, telling them EXACTLY what you’re doing. (“If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the bathroom.”)
✓ Pretend your computer mouse is a CB radio mic. Talk to it.

• “Big Wig Day”, Hmmm…How could we make this occasion work in conjunction with “Fun at Work Day”?) LINK: https://nationalbigwigday.com
• “Hell is Freezing Over Day”, a day to make a list of things you have said or thought in the past that you would never, ever do. Think about each one to see if you still feel the same way. (What thing that you said you’d never do . . . have you done?)
• “Hot Chocolate Day”, saluting the warm and creamy beverage we love to drink on a cold Winter’s day.
• “Inspire Your Heart With Art Day”, celebrating the effect it can have on your disposition. Look at a piece of art and ask yourself – What is telling me? How does it make me feel? What emotions is it evoking within me? (What is that thing?)
• “Brandy Alexander Day”, saluting the classic dessert drink that combines brandy with dark crème de cacao in a silky blend — often likened to an alcoholic milkshake.
• “Scotch Tape Day”, on this day in 1930, the 3M Company (then called Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing) revealed Scotch Tape. Consisting of clear cellophane tape with a pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side, it would become a household and office necessity.
• “Eat Brussels Sprouts Day”, just in case you aren’t already in a bad mood. The small cabbage and cruciferous vegetables were developed from cabbage around the 1400s in Brussels, Belgium. (So, where’d the name come from?)
• “Winterlude”, the annual celebration of the season in Canada’s capital region of Ottawa-Gatineau. This is the 47thedition, lasting through Feb. 17. The national celebration includes fun activities such as the live ice-carving championships, light art, the Snowflake Kingdom, Indigenous Experiences, the Aurora Festive Winter Experience…and beaver tails! SATURDAY:
• “Ice Cream for Breakfast Day”, invented on a snowy winter day in the 1960s by Florence Rappaport in Rochester NY. To entertain her 6 kids on a day when her city experienced several feet of snow, shutting down schools, she decided…well, you know…
• “Change Your Password Day”, an annual reminder that ‘123456′ is not keeping your data all that safe.
• “Spunky Old Broads Day”, dedicated to the saying ‘old girls just wanna have fun’. Spunky old broads are positive, fun, butt-kicking mature women over the age of 50 who refuse to sit back quietly and get old. (Who’s the spunkiest famous old broad, now that Betty White has left us?)
• “G.I. Joe Day”. The name was inspired by the 1945 Robert Mitchum movie “The Story of GI Joe”. FUN FACT: Hasbro invented the term ‘action figure’ because it believed boys wouldn’t play with a ‘doll’.
• “Dark Chocolate Day”. Unsweetened chocolate is dark chocolate made up of between 85–100% cocoa beans. It is the most bitter dark chocolate — but also the healthiest.
• “Car Insurance Day”, commemorating the first auto insurance policy, issued to one Truman Martin of Buffalo NY on this date in 1898. It cost $11.50 (96 cents if he paid monthly)
• “Baked Alaska Day”, made with hard ice cream on a base of sponge cake and covered in a shell of toasted meringue. (I thought “Baked Alaska” was the name of a reality show!)
• “Robinson Crusoe Day”, commemorating the anniversary of the rescue of Alexander Selkirk, on this date in 1709. He was a Scottish sailor who was banished to an uninhabited island in 1704 after a quarrel with his captain. His adventures there are said to have formed the basis for Daniel Defoe’s book “Robinson Crusoe”.

SUNDAY:
• “Groundhog Day”, an annual tradition that perpetuates the folk tale that a hibernating groundhog prodded from its burrow can forecast 6 more weeks of Winter by seeing its shadow. This annual oddity stems from the Christian celebration of “Candlemas”. An old Scottish poem proclaims, “If Candlemas is fair and clear, there’ll be 2 winters in the year.”
– Canada’s best known groundhog forecaster is ‘Wiarton Willie’. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/hyhjc36v
– ‘Punxsutawney Phil’ is America’s original prognosticator, and most famous hog. LINK: http://www.groundhog.org
• “Dump Your Significant Jerk Day”, when you’re encouraged to terminate your jerk relationship before Valentine’s Day, thereby saving the money and awkwardness involved in faking romance.
• “Crêpe Day” (aka “La Chandelier”) in France, when the traditional thin pancakes are served, filled with either sweet or savory goodies. Today, it’s customary to hold a coin in one hand and the crêpe pan in the other as you flip the crêpe into the air. If you manage to catch it in the pan, it’s said that your family will be prosperous for the rest of the year.
• “Sled Dog Day”, honoring those tenacious teams of canines that pull together to provide transportation in the snowy North. (A good day to enjoy some ‘mush’!)
• “Tater Tots Day”, The name “tater tots” is trademarked, but is also generically applied to any similar brands of potato products. “Tater” is an abbreviation for potato, and “tots” refers to their small size. In some places they are simply called “tots.” Tater Tots were invented in 1953.
• “Change Your Windshield Wipers Day”. Just like you change your smoke alarm batteries when it’s time to spring forward or fall back, Groundhog Day is a reminder to replace our windshield wipers. One study found that nearly ¼ of auto accidents happen when it’s raining, and most of us neglect to change our wipers until our vision is already impaired.
• “World Play Your Ukulele Day”, offering uke players a chance to ‘change the world 4 strings at a time’ by playing, sharing, and teaching others to play the mini-guitar.
• “World Wetlands Day”, observed since 1997 to raise awareness of the ecological value and benefit of the world’s wetlands. (Formerly known as ‘swamps’.)
• “Self Renewal Day”, try these tips to recharge, renew and rejuvenate:
-Smile when you first wake up, no matter how you feel.
-At different times during the day, take 3 deep breaths.
-Instead picking up your phone or turning on the TV, sit quietly for a few minutes. Breathe slowly, and notice what you see and hear.
-Say “thanks” to some part of your body for what it does for you. If this makes you laugh, all the better.
-Gently place your hands on top of your head, with your fingers together and slightly cupped. Hold in a relaxed way for a few seconds.
-Go outside or sit beside an open window. Feel the fresh air on your face. Smile again.
