BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Robert Downey Jr., Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy and Da’Vine Joy Randolph have been named in the first group of presenters for the 2025 Oscars. All 4 went home with an Academy Award at last year’s ceremony. Downey Jr. won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role as ‘Lewis Strauss’ in “Oppenheimer”. His co-star Murphy, who played ‘Robert Oppenheimer’, won best actor. Randolph won best supporting actress for her performance in “The Holdovers”, while Stone took home the trophy for her role in “Poor Things”. The Academy Awards are set for March 2.

★ It’s been a few years since they last “blue” up, but the Smurfs are back. Paramount has unveiled the first full trailer for its upcoming musical film “Smurfs,” which features a starry cast that includes Rihanna as the voice of ‘Smurfette’. Riri also introduces the trailer, and is producing the film — and wrote original songs for it. The voice cast also includes James Corden, Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, Sandra Oh, and Octavia Spencer, plus Kurt Russell and John Goodman, and more. “Smurfs” hits theaters July 18. ★ Supermodel Gisele Bündchen has given birth to her third child, her first with boyfriend Joaquim Valente. The 44-year-old mom and baby are said to be healthy. It’s unclear when the new bundle arrived. The news comes months after reports surfaced that Bündchen was 5-6 months along. At the time, TMZ said that the couple planned to wait until birth to find out if they were having a girl or boy. It’s still unclear which they had. Bündchen’s ex-husband Tom Brady and their kids, 15-year-old Benjamin and 12-year-old Vivian, were given a heads-up about the baby news before it broke last fall.

★ Robert De Niro is set to star in the Netflix crime thriller “The Whisper Man”. Based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Alex North, it tells the story of a widowed crime writer who looks to his estranged father, a retired police detective, for help when his 8-year-old is abducted, only to discover a connection with the decades-old case of a convicted serial killer known as “The Whisper Man.” James Ashcroft (“The Rule of Jenny Pen”) is set to direct, and production is expected to start this Spring.

★ Harrison Ford is unfazed by the fact that the last ‘Indiana Jones’ film was a flop. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he said of the performance of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, the 5th and final installment in the series, which opened in 2023 to an underwhelming $60.4 million at the domestic box office. Ford said: “(Stuff) happens”. I was really the one who felt there was another story to tell…I wanted one more chance to pick him up and shake the dust off his (butt) and stick him out there…to see what happened.” Despite the film not being as successful as the others, Ford said: “I’m still happy I made that movie.”

• Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish – seem to be teasing a new collab. The pair sat down for a joint interview at the DGA Theater Complex in Hollywood, and had fans on the edge of their seats after both remarked that they really “do need to do that.” Eilish did say, though, that they are both “resting” their voices “for now”.
• Taylor Swift – Her boyfriend Travis Kelce‘s favorite album of hers isn’t “Midnights” — it’s “The Tortured Poets Department”. He also told an interviewer that his fav songs on the album are ‘The Alchemy’ and ‘So High School’, both of which are reportedly about him. He could “neither confirm nor deny” whether “Reputation (Taylor’s Version)” is on its way. (Of course, he has other things to think about right now…)
• Van Halen – Drummer Alex Van Halen was honored with the Buddy Rich Award at the 2024 Drumeo Awards. READING TV:
Are you part of the in-crowd? According to a new survey from youth culture website “Pubity”, a whopping 70% of viewers of its Broadcast Channel watch TV with subtitles turned on. It would seem that whether that’s to catch every word of dialogue, or a substitute for having the sound turn up, closed-captioning is must-have for many. Many commenters agreed, with some saying that they can’t properly hear without the subtitles on. Another pointed out: “That’s how I learned English.” On the other hand, some cannot STAND words endlessly flashing across their screen. One non-fan wrote: “I hate subtitles with a burning passion.” Another looks at captions this way: “If I wanted to read, I’d read a book, not watch TV.”
(I don’t know about you, but to me, turning off subtitles is like playing TV on ‘hard mode’.)
(One thing’s for sure: If movie subtitles were never invented, I’d eat a lot fewer chips!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A robber is in custody after essentially turning himself in to police. Bullhead City, Arizona police posted surveillance photos on social media from 2 recent bank robberies, asking for help identifying the suspect. Soon after, detectives received a tip from someone who identified him as 37-year-old John Steiner. They were working on obtaining a search warrant for the suspect’s truck when he showed up at the police station. Why? He wanted to report that someone pointed a gun at him and accused him of being the bank robber posted on social media. Steiner was then taken into custody for robbery, his truck was searched, and clothing was found inside that matched what was worn during the robberies. Also still inside the truck: The notes he allegedly used to demand money from the bank tellers. (Pro tip: Your getaway plan should NOT involve driving yourself straight to the police station – with all the evidence!)
➢ The company behind a popular Artificial Intelligence system, that wants everyone to use AI, is asking potential employees NOT to use AI in their job applications. Anthropic, which developed the popular AI writing assistant Claude, makes the request in most of its 150 current job listings. Anthropic, which recommends on its website: “Talk to Claude, anywhere you go. Brainstorm ideas, get answers…” But included many of its job listings are the words: “Please do not use AI assistants during the application process. We want to understand your personal interest in Anthropic without mediation through an AI system, and we also want to evaluate your non-AI-assisted communication skills.” (Apparently, Claude can help you with anything — except your cover letter. For that, you’re on your own!)

BOWLED OVER:
In 2013, a newspaper reporter gained access to the NFL’s “Host City Specifications and Requirements”. That’s the league’s confidential 153-page list of its demands for any city bidding to host the Super Bowl. Although the list has probably changed since then, it has probably become even MORE difficult to fulfil. Here are some of the items on that 2013 list…
☞ 16 months before the bog game, the NFL will send 180 people to the host city for a “familiarization trip”. All expenses must be covered by the host city.
☞ Hotels where players stay must carry the NFL Network on their TV systems for a year prior to the Super Bowl.
☞ The host city must give the NFL the use of at least 20 billboards at no charge.
☞ The city must cover the cost of providing the NFL with a task force devoted strictly to busting game-ticket counterfeiters.
☞ NFL must be allowed to install ATMs in the stadium that accept “preferred” credit and debit cards. The league may also cover up or remove ATMs belonging to other banks.
☞ In the event of a snow or ice storm on game day, the city must give priority to the NFL over “all other ice and snow” projects (except threats to public safety).
☞ On game day, NFL must be given access to 35,000 parking spots near the stadium at no cost.
☞ The requires exclusive access to 3 area golf courses (free) to host a tournament on Super Bowl weekend.
☞ NFL also requires the use of 2 “top quality” bowling alleys (free) for tournaments on the Wed. before the game.
☞ After the game, the host city must remove the playing field, and if requested, give the pieces to the NFL, so they can be sold as “licensed products”.
(What? No one has to remove the brown M&Ms?)

The phrase “Choose Love” will be stenciled in the back of one end zone at Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. An NFL spokesperson said: “‘Choose Love’ is appropriate to use in the Super Bowl as our country has endured in recent weeks wild fires in southern California, the terrorist attack here in New Orleans, the plane and helicopter crash near our nation’s capital and the plane crash in Philadelphia.” The other end zone will have the message “It Takes All of Us.” This will be the first time that the words “End Racism” are not used in the big game since 2021.
