IT’S A GAS GAS GAS:
New research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston has found that sewer gas can induce – ‘suspended animation’. Hydrogen sulphide, the toxic gas that smells like rotten eggs, occurs naturally in swamps, springs and volcanoes. But in mice, it’s found to slow down heart rate and breathing and decrease body temperature, while keeping a normal blood pressure. Researchers say that if the same holds true for humans, the gas could help protect organs during surgery. (It’s not exactly suspended animation, but [co-host] once managed to evacuate an entire bus station.)

DO TONGUE STUDS COUNT?
Women are most likely to dress to impress when they are at their most fertile, according to new UCLA research. The study of young college women shows they tend to wear more fashionable and flashier clothing and jewelry when they are ovulating, selecting skirts instead of pants, and showing more skin in general. Researchers suggest this is a natural part of the human version of a tendency all animals have – indicating the readiness to mate. (Apparently the ladies in [local working girl area] are ovulating daily.)

NUTS TO YOU:
Eating walnuts at the end of a meal may help cut the damage that fatty foods do to the arteries, according to new research at the Hospital Clinico in Barcelona, Spain. It’s thought that the nuts are rich in compounds that reduce hardening of the arteries, thereby keeping them flexible. The study also suggests that walnuts may have even more health benefits than the oft-touted olive oil. (And you also lose weight because it takes 6 hours of tedious work with a hammer and tongs to get your recommended daily 1 ounce-worth.)

DID YOU KNOW?
Wint-O-Green Life Savers create sparks when you chew them in the dark. Other hard sugar candy also produces ‘triboluminescence’ – light from friction – but the fluorescent quality of wintergreen flavoring makes brighter sparks with a bluish tint.

The 6th day of the week and the number 13 both have foreboding reputations said to date from ancient times, so when they come together (1-to-3 times a year), tradition has it they bring misfortune. (See BULL’S BITS.)
• “School Librarian Day” … but don’t say anything about it too loud or you’ll get a detention.
• “VQA Wine Day” (Vintners Quality Alliance), honoring Canadian wines that meet quality standards and verification of product origin. Although the regulations vary between BC- and Ontario-made wines, in general the VQA designation requires …
– 100% of the grapes used to produce the wine be grown in Canada.
– The wine must contain at least 85% of the grape variety named on the label.
– Wines bearing the name of a specific region must be 85-95% made from grapes from that specific area.
– Wines of a particular vintage date must be 95% from that particular year of harvest.
(And an unofficial requirement: the price must be jacked up by at least triple.)

SATURDAY –

• “Sweetest Day”, born out of a project instigated by a confection company employee some 70 years ago to distribute candy to the sick, shut-ins & orphans in Cleveland OH. Observed on the 3rd Saturday of October, the objective has become to do something nice for someone today.

• “My Mom is a Student Day”, when kids are to show support for moms who’ve gone back to school by giving gifts of school supplies. Be sure to ask mom if she finished her homework.
• “Sunday School Teacher Appreciation Day”. Hey, no spit-balls today, okay?

Specials this week include bacteria, purportedly taken from Dave Navarro at only $5.75; and skin cells from movie actor Jeff Bridges for just $10.75.
