Wow, You Really Know Your Sheet!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
TODAY “Canadian Idol” auditions come to Montréal . . . TONIGHT NYC’s annual “Tribeca Film Festival” opens with a screening of “The Interpreter”, starring Sean Penn & Nicole Kidman . . .
There’s another rumor floating around that Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher are set to wed – this time it’s said to be planned for the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas (as soon as they refill the famous  dancing Fountains of Bellagio with Kabbalah water) . . . All those renovations done to houses on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” could be taxable so producers lease each property for the purposes of shooting the show for 14 days – that way any improvements made during the lease are tax-exempt (smart!) . . . Since his death, John Paul II’s 5th and final book, “Memory and Identity”, has become the all-time bestseller in his native Poland, eclipsing the previous record-holder – “Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix” . . . “Fever Pitch” star Drew Barrymore says she has perfected the art of vomiting on-screen – by putting mushroom soup in her mouth and making hacking sounds (yuck, thanks for sharing) . . . Prolific movie actor Samuel L Jackson collects action figures of characters he has played on the bigscreen, including  “Shaft”, ‘Frozone’  from “The Incredibles”, ‘Mace Windu’ from “Star Wars” and even “Pulp Fiction” characters that he found in a novelty store in Canada.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Buddy Jewell – TONIGHT the “If She Were Any Other Woman” singer receives the “2005 Fatherhood Award” during the National Fatherhood Initiative’s annual presentation dinner.
• Carbon Leaf – The Richmond VA-based “Life Less Ordinary” band has been playing clubs and colleges up and down the East Coast for 5 years and made 3 independent CDs. Their sound is described as ‘ether-electrified porch music’.
• George Canyon – The “My Name” singer’s name was Fred George Lays when he was born near Westville, Nova Scotia but he adopted a stage name when he launched his music career in Calgary 15 years ago.
• Great Big Sea – Singer Alan Doyle says producing actor Russell Crowe’s upcoming album has been an ‘excellent music experience’. The two met while Crowe was filming “Cinderella Man” in Toronto. They later continued writing and recording songs at Crowe’s home studio in Australia.
• Relient K – The “Be My Escape” Christian rockers from Canton OH ruled out being a straight punk band, says member Matt Hoopes, because they like to sing in tune. The ‘Relient K’ was a Plymouth car model made by Chrysler Corp in the 1980s.
• The Hives – TONIGHT they’re on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien”.
• Usher – He tells “Men’s Health” he kicks off his 3-hour workout sessions with 20 minutes of meditation, then gets into 30 minutes of ‘static stretching’, 90 minutes on C-V machines, 10 minutes working on his abs, and finishes off with a 15-minute steam and a cold shower.

TODAY’S VIDEO RELEASES:
• “Meet the Fockers” (Comedy – DVD): In this sequel to 2000’s “Meet the Parents”, all hell breaks loose when the ‘Byrnes’ family meets the ‘Focker’ family for the first time. Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro & Blythe Danner from the original film are joined by Dustin Hoffman & Barbra Streisand as ‘Bernie & Roz Focker’. Hard to believe, but this one cleaned up over $500 million at the box office worldwide.
• “Birth” (Psychological Thriller – DVD): Nicole Kidman plays a widow who becomes convinced that a 10-year-old boy is the reincarnation of her dead husband. The most famous thing about this film is the controversial bathtub scene featuring Nicole and the boy (Cameron Bright) naked … but done tastefully, of course. Lauren Bacall co-stars as Kidman’s mother.
• “House of Flying Daggers” (Martial Arts Action – DVD): An exotic, beautiful, blind dancer is associated with a dangerous revolutionary gang known as the House of Flying Daggers. Enraptured by her, police deputies concoct a plan to save her from capture. In Mandarin with English subtitles.
• “A Love Song for Bobby Long” (Drama – DVD): John Travolta & Scarlett Johansson star in the story of an estranged teen who returns to her family home in New Orleans only to discover she has an unexpected roommate: her late mother’s lover, a boozy academic who’s slowly drinking himself to death.

BURNING DESIRE:
Crispy, thin-crust pizza may soon be a thing of the past in Italy, where wood-burning ovens may be abolished under a new law limiting air pollution. The National Consumers’ Union warns that restaurateurs and bakeries would have to stop using the ovens if their emissions exceed new pollution limits. Italy, which boasts 30,000 pizzerias, has reacted badly to the news, with one newspaper claiming the smell of bread is a, quote: “Physical emotion that leads to fantasy, recalling one’s childhood and a world of flavors and rituals, which all lead back to the oven.” (Man, I just got hungry … how ‘bout you?)
– “Daily Telegraph”

SWAT BECOMES SWAM:
The Mesa AZ Police Department is seeking about $100,000 in federal grant money in order to find and train a new member for its SWAT team – a monkey! The average capuchin monkey weighs only 3 to 8 lbs, has tiny humanlike hands and puzzle-solving skills. Top cops say it would be able to get into places no officer or robot could go and could unlock doors, search buildings and find suicide victims on command. (“I ain’t going in there. Send in Special Weapons & Monkey!”)
– KOLD / AP

AND SHE’S ALWAYS IN THE MOOD:
Nuremberg, Germany inventor Michael Harriman claims he’s created the world’s most sophisticated – robot sex doll! The doll sells under the ‘Andy’ brand name at about $7,500 for the basic model, with extra charges for adaptations like extra large breasts. Underneath the special silicon skin, originally developed for use in medical surgery, is an electronic heart that beats faster during sex. The doll also breathes harder and has an internal heater to raise body temperature. However, Harriman says, their feet stay cold – just like in real life. (Another advantage to marriage … it has a warranty.)

HOW VARIOUS AGES EARN WAGES:
Australian business consultant Gretel Bakker says each age group has its own work ethic, tastes and attitudes when on-the-job. For instance …
• Baby Boomers [born prior to 1953]: Generally workaholics, enjoy material comforts, are reactive and don’t like to be told what to do, want acknowledgment for their efforts, are results-oriented and have the attitude that age is no barrier.
• Generation Jones [born between 1954 and 1965]: They mix idealism with cynicism, are very self-reliant, have a strong focus on finances and employment security.
• Generation X [circa 1966 to 1977]: Are brutally honest, self-reliant, tend to work alone, value freedom and flexibility in the workplace.
• Generation Y [circa 1978 to 1987]: Like working in groups, demand respect first and try to prove themselves later, demand flexibility and up-to-date technology.
(She forgot Generation M [1987 to now]: Huh? Like I gotta go to work?)
– “Sunday Mail”

AND WE QUOTE:
“I love it but it’s hard to understand why they care so much.”  – Clay Aiken in the “Ft Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel” echoing the sentiments of many others who are trying to understand why he has such rabid fans.

A new online forum has been launched to introduce ‘beautiful people to other beautiful people’.
New members have to submit a photo of themselves and get booted off by other members if they don’t measure up to stringent standards. While about 500 apply each day, only about 1 in 15 passes. Why the exclusivity? Marketing director Greg Hodge says people are fed up wasting time and money meeting unattractive people online.
