BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The investigation into the death of Verne Troyer is officially underway and an examination of his body is set to be conducted. An autopsy has been scheduled for this week. The exact cause of death is still unclear, but the initial call to the star’s home was for poisoning, and his family suggested that his death may have been the result of a suicide attempt. The coroner notes that Troyer died in the hospital, which was where he had been since being placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold.

★ Avatar and The Godfather. Do you see the connection? James Cameron says that that his four planned “Avatar” sequels are at heart a “generational family saga”. Quote: “I found myself as a father of five, starting to think about what would an Avatar story be like if it was a family drama, if it was The Godfather. Obviously very different genre, but I got intrigued by that idea. So, that’s really what it is. It’s a generational family saga”.
(And it’s taking him about a generation to make the next one too!)

★ Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are reportedly at the center of a bidding war between movie bosses over the rights to make a story of their romance. Hollywood is said to be hot on the idea to immortalize the story of the famous couple, who wed in 2014 after a two-year romance following Kim’s brief second wedding to Kris Humphries. Now the likes of Warner Bros. and Sony are wooing them, and they figure a movie could be a huge hit if it’s done right. Word is that Kanye wants his music to play a central part.
(You have to admit that Kim’s first movie will be a tough one to top!)

★ The tragedy of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash is not lost to Canada’s neighbours to the south. Ellen DeGeneres honoured the victims of the crash by carrying a hockey stick to a speaking event in Calgary on Saturday.  She told the crowd at Scotiabank Saddledome, “My heart breaks for everyone, it hurt all of us. Let’s try to shine some light and love and dedicate this night to them.”

★ Paula Patton says she was a ghostwriter for Robin Thicke under the pseudonym Max Haddington, and she has co-writing credits on songs like ‘Magic, ‘Dreamworld’, ‘Get in My Way’ and ‘Diamonds’. Patton says that the two had been a couple since she was 15 years old, and she agreed to co-write under the pen-name so it wouldn’t seem like Thicke was writing with his ‘girl’.

• Luis Fonsi – A pair of accordion players have been asked by the Toronto Transit Commission to stop performing his hit ‘Despacito’ on Toronto subway trains. The two have been spotted separately by commuters in recent days and videos of their performances have been circulating on social media.
• Beyoncé – once again turned Coachella into Beychella with an energetic performance that included some of the same, and some new stuff from the previous week. She brought out Destiny’s Child and hubby Jay-Z for the second weekend in a row, and surprised the crowd by performing with J Balvin for his hit song, ‘Mi Gente’, which Beyoncé was featured on.
• Spice Girls – Mel B is planning a movie about her life. Reports are that she wants to create a ”documentary-style film” about her career so far.
• Eminem – reached 10 years of sobriety on Friday. On Saturday, he tweeted: “Celebrated my 10 years yesterday”, alongside a photo of him proudly showing off a sobriety coin marking the milestone.
• Blink 182 – drummer Travis Barker’s music festival has a backstage breastfeeding area. His ‘Back to the Beach Fest’ will kick off this weekend at Huntington State Beach in Southern California and, to ensure everyone can go, he’s created a kid-friendly section so that new mothers can feed their babies.
• Prince – was once offered nearly a half million bucks to play a private party for Jada and Will Smith. A found document says the Smiths were planning a private party for 100 guests in Los Angeles scheduled for September 17; Jada’s birthday is September 18. It’s unclear if the party ever happened.
• Metallica – Last year, they announced the formation of ‘All Within My Hands’, their foundation to facilitate volunteerism. Now, they are inviting fans to volunteer for a day on May 23 at the community food banks the band supported during last summer’s North American tour.
• Maren Morris – is starting work on her second album and is excited about it. She refers to it as ”genre-less” and reports that she loves the ”creative freedom” she is enjoying in its production. She says it will be ‘’much more positive’’ than her debut and will also feature love songs about her husband Ryan.
• Shania Twain — has apologized in a series of tweets for comments she made about Donald Trump.  She found herself in hot water after saying she’d have voted for President Trump had she been a U.S. citizen.
• Glenn Campbell – Sunday (April 22) would have been his 82nd birthday, and his daughter Debby has released “The Way We Were”, a tribute album in which she sings some of her dad’s most beloved hits. It features 12 Campbell favorites, including the title track and ‘By the Time I Get To Phoenix’.

SMILEYS: SERIOUSLY WRONG:
You probably shouldn’t have to be told this, but just in case: You shouldn’t use emojis in work-related emails. No smiley-faces, no cute symbols, nothing. If you need proof, scientists from Ben-Gurion University conducted an experiment in which participants were asked to read a work-related email from an unknown person, and evaluate their competence and warmth.
The content of the email was the same for all participants. Some included smileys, and some did not. The results showed that the smileys in the emails had no effect on the perception of warmth, but had a negative effect on the perception of competence. That’s right, the researchers concluded that including emojis in work emails can make you seem incompetent to your peers. And to business associates. Especially the ones whom you don’t know personally.
(But sometimes all-caps are appropriate. Like when they say: DON’T SEND EMAILS WITH EMOJIS. IT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE YOU DON’T TAKE YOUR JOB SERIOUSLY.) (SMILEY-FACE)

I LOVE SCIENCE:
Everyone knows that one guy who claims he came up with a great idea when he was three sheets to the wind. Now, science says that makes sense. Drunks are better at creative problem solving.
Professor Andrew Jarosz of Mississippi State University carried out a study where vodka-cranberry cocktails were served to 20 male subjects until their blood alcohol levels neared legal intoxication and then gave each a series of word association problems. Not only did those who imbibed give more correct answers than a sober control group performing the same task, but they also arrived at solutions more quickly. They found that the tipsy people solved two to three more problems than folks who stayed sober. They also submitted their answers more quickly within the one-minute-per-question time limit.
(Unfortunately, their solution to every problem was to order pizza…)
(The problem with coming up with a great solution when you are hammered is that by the next morning, you’ve forgotten it!)

SLEEP MYTHS THAT WE NEED TO STOP BELIEVING:
✗ If You’re Functioning At Work, You’re Getting Sufficient Sleep: When you’re consistently not getting enough sleep, you get used to feeling tired, and your body adapts to function on that amount of sleep. But this doesn’t mean that you’re performing at your best. You may be making mental errors or find yourself being short with co-workers if you aren’t getting enough sleep (Or maybe that’s just the way I am!)
✗ Everyone Functions Best On Eight Hours Of Sleep: There is the perception out there that eight is the magic number. Quality of sleep matters much more than length. And everyone is different. Some need just three to four hours, although researchers believe that this only applies to 5% of the population. Experimentation is the best way to go. Observe how adding or subtracting one hour of sleep impacts your productivity.
(If you have kids…the subtracting part should be no problem…every morning!)
✗ You Can Binge On Sleep On The Weekends To “Catch Up”: It might feel nice, but the harm of binging on sleep on Saturday and Sunday is that it makes it hard to get a good night of sleep on Sunday night, which then sends us off into the workweek on the wrong foot. (Ask me if I care about this on a Saturday at 6:30am!)
✗ You Can Train Yourself To Be A Morning Person (Or A Night Person): You’re born with one tendency or the other, so you might as well work it as best as you can. No amount of coffee or willpower will make a morning person do their best work at night, or make a night-owl grow to love early mornings.
(I don’t think that I’ve trained myself to be a morning person…it’s more like being a night person has been beaten out of me!)
