BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ [***UPDATE***] “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced Monday to 18 months in a New Mexico prison, the maximum sentence possible for her conviction on charges of involuntary manslaughter. Gutierrez-Reed, the young and inexperienced armorer in charge of guns and ammunition on the movie set when Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021, was found guilty last month. She was acquitted on evidence-tampering charges that could have extended her sentence further.

★ The 30th anniversary of the original animated film version of “The Lion King” will be celebrated at the Hollywood Bowl next month with a live-to-film concert and screening that will include cast members from both the movie and theatrical versions — plus other stars — including Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, Billy Eichner, Ernie Sabella, Jason Weaver and Bradley GIbson. The shows will take place at the Bowl May 24-25, featuring a full orchestra performing the Oscar-winning score. Cast members who’ll sing the musical numbers written for the film by Elton John and Tim Rice will be drawn from the hit 1998 Broadway adaptation and the 2019 movie remake, as well as the initial film. More celeb performers will be announced.

★ Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry are cooking up 2 new projects with Netflix. One series will see Markle celebrate the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship. She’ll also exec-produce. The second explores the world of professional polo. Prince Harry is known as a keen polo player and is often photographed playing internationally. He’ll make a cameo in the series, and will exec produce with his wife. Both untitled shows are in early stages of production, and are part of the deal they signed with Netflix in 2020 via their Archewell Productions company.
-Deadline
★ CBS is looking to reopen “Cold Case”. A reboot of the crime procedural, which aired for from 2003-10, is currently in development. The new iteration would follow an entirely different group of detectives dedicated to investigating unsolved crimes. Though details are being kept under wraps, one confirmed change from the original series is its setting; the reboot would take place in the Southwest. The OG was set in Philadelphia.

★ Jimmy Fallon is about to celebrate his 10th anniversary as host of “The Tonight Show”, a franchise that began with Steve Allen in 1954. Allen was followed by legends Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien – and Fallon wants some day to be the show’s longest-serving MC. Speaking about Carson’s record of 30 years as the longest-running host of this seminal late-night show, Fallon said during a panel at the Contenders Television event, “Let’s break the record, let’s go, let’s do 30 years!”
-Deadline
★ Uma Thurman has stepped into the ongoing beef between rappers Kendrick Lamar, Drake and J. Cole. Seemingly in response to Lamar’s verbal taunts on the song ‘Like That’, Drake dropped his own song and shared a photo of Thurman’s character from Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill,” surrounded by attackers on all sides. Thurman took up the call, sharing a photo of her original Kill Bill yellow jumpsuit, and tagged Drake on Instagram, captioning the photo, “Need this?” Drake reshared the post and replied, “Yes pls. The pen is the Hattori Hanzo.” That’s a reference to the famous sword and its swordsmith from the film. LINK:

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Billie Eilish – Her 3rd album “Hit Me Hard and Soft” is still nearly a month away from release, and she’s not dropping any singles ahead of time, but she teased a 15-second snippet of one song during an interview. • Alice in Chains — A day after announcing that his original G&L guitar had gone missing, Jerry Cantrell says it turns out it was just misplaced. In an Instagram video, while standing next to the guitar, he said: “We found the damn thing…what a relief. It was misplaced…during transit between photo shoots and the studio. He also said he’s working on a record “right now”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4zdh7p9z

The unlikely pair teamed up to record ‘Let it Roll’ for “The Garfield Movie”, which hits theaters May 24. Urban wrote on Facebook: “Out of the blue, I got a call from Garfield asking if I’d sing and play a song for his movie.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4dw8kb3v
• Riley Green – celebrated his annual Duckman Jam, which happened over the weekend in Florida, by dropping his new EP “Way Out Here”. Among its 7 songs are the previously released ‘Worst Way’ and the title track, plus a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Atlantic City’. LINK: https://youtu.be/lEgfh7U3dY0
• Jelly Roll – In the midst of winning all those awards lately, he’s also been losing weight. A month away from participating in the 2 Bears 5K at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, he told People magazine: “I’m probably down 70-something pounds.” How? He said he’s been “doing 2-3 miles a day, 4-6 days a week”. And eating healthy.

SHOOTING THE BULL

SUPPORT STRUCTURE:
Of course, it’s pretty obvious that having tension in your relationship can be a stressful thing. But according to researchers at Binghamton University, there’s a connection between stress and having an unsupportive partner, too. And that could affect your health. In their study, the researchers found that wives who received support “more negatively” (e.g., rejecting help) felt less understood, validated and cared for by a partner, and that had a ‘stress-amplifying’ effect, meaning levels of the stress hormone cortisol increased. High levels cortisol can lead to increased risks of obesity, cancer, and heart disease, and accelerated aging of the immune system. On a happier note, those who said their partner showed positive support skills, showed lower stress levels and felt more understood, validated and cared for.
(My wife has always been very supportive. Every day, she encourages me to get out there and find a ‘real job’!)
(Well, my first wife definitely can’t say I’m not supportive. I’ve been paying support for years!)

NEW FOOD NEWS:

❑ It’s a good idea to snack before heading out on a grocery run. New research shows that food shopping on an empty stomach can lead to some serious overspending. A poll of 2,000 adults in the USA found that the average person spends an extra $26 per trip when they’re hungry. And with the average person making 2 grocery runs per week, well, YOU do the math… (Wow. I’d better stock up on snacks so that doesn’t happen!)
❑ Yes, TikTok has become a useful resource for finding important information – whether that be discovering useful products or time-saving hacks. Here’s the problem: New research shows that health and wellness tips should probably be taken with a grain of salt. A study by Dublin City University found that 57% of people who use TikTok consider it their main source of nutrition information (and 87% of millennials and Gen Z do). But, get this, just 2.1% of that info is accurate and regulated with public health codes. Some of the recent viral hacks that surfaced on TikTok include “Nature’s Ozempic” (the supplement Berberine) and the practice of marinating Diet Coke in the fridge for days to make the flavor “crispier”. (Are you supposed to put it in the “crisper”?)

S.N.A.C.U. (Situation Normal, All Cluttered Up):
You’ve got to take the good with the bad – and the arrival of spring also means the arrival of spring cleaning season. And if you’re like me, one of the big reasons you dread starting is because of all that clutter. And new research says it’s a common concern. A survey of 2,000 homeowners with garages in the US found that 40% of us are afraid of facing the clutter in our homes. And although 82% said they consider themselves to be organized, they’re feeling the mental load of keeping their home in check. Nearly half of respondents said that the organization of their home has an impact on their mental health, and 80% feel more motivated when their home isn’t cluttered. The most difficult areas of the home to keep organized were found to be the garage, followed by closets and drawers.
(Obviously, these people don’t have teenagers’ bedrooms!)
(Who am I kidding? The REAL reason I dread spring cleaning is because that involves doing stuff. And I don’t wanna do any stuff that doesn’t involve my couch and the playoffs on TV!)

COOL CERTIFICATIONS THAT ARE PRETTY EASY TO GET:
☞ Teaching English as a Foreign Language: Can be as simple as doing a Google search and taking a few classes. It is good for a lifetime, and schools all over the world are looking for teachers with it. Note: Having a college degree is usually a pre-requisite.
☞ NBA Free Agent: It’s not technically a certification, but all you have to do is declare yourself eligible for the draft. (And then put “NBA Free Agent” on your resume!)
☞ Licensed Alligator Trapping Agent: In Florida, you can do this for $50. (I’m doing this now. Wish me luck…)
☞ Certified Bartender: If you look around, you can find courses for as little as $20.
☞ Scuba Diving: Even if you don’t live near an ocean, you can get a scuba certification pretty easily.
☞ Bounty Hunter: In some states, you don’t even need a license.
☞ Nutritionist: In the US and UK, this isn’t a protected term. So, you can just sort of…call yourself one. (This explains so much about what I’m seeing on TikTok these days…)
☞ Wilderness Firefighter: In the US at least, it’s mostly online with a little bit at the local fire department. Then you can go around the country and fight forest fires.
☞ Fireworks Launching: Getting a license to launch professional-grade fireworks only takes one day-long class. (And eventually, 3 or 4 fingers!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Researchers have found that a pat on the back statistically improves your chances of a successful basketball free throw – demonstrating the power of human touch. A team at the Universities of Basel, Landau and Perdue studied video from a total of 60 games played by women’s basketball teams and 835 incidents of 2 free throws. The data showed that the chance of scoring rose when teammates showed their support through touch. The effect only happened after a failed first shot, which the study author explained in her conclusion, writing: “Support from teammates is most helpful when your stress level is already high because you’ve missed the first of the two shots.” (What I need to do is hire a designated hugger to follow me around the golf course…!)

BS CHRONOMETER 04.16.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day”, an annual event begun as a promotion for a pajama-maker, that’s evolved into another fun excuse for office hijinks. (Many of us have been wearing our PJs while working for years now…)
• “Eggs Benedict Day”, a day to enjoy heart-attack-on-a-plate – poached eggs, topped with back bacon, served on toasted English muffins, and slathered in Hollandaise sauce … made of even more egg-yolks and butter. (Because we’re “Hollandaise” together!)
• “Healthcare Decisions Day”, to inspire and educate the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning.
• “Save the Elephant Day”, to raise awareness of threats to their future in both Africa and Asia, ranging from poachers and traffickers to loss of habitat. At current rates, ivory poaching could make the African elephant extinct within decades, according to “TIME”.
• “World Voice Day”, initiated in 1999 as a celebration of the phenomenon of voice as a tool of communication. Events include concerts, symposia, and open houses at voice clinics, TV shows, and radio programs. (What celeb has the greatest voice…aside from Morgan Freeman?)
• “Day of the Mushroom”, celebrating edible mushrooms, which can be eaten plain, be stuffed, or be used in salads, soups, and sauces. (And pizzas!)
• “Librarian Day”, honoring Dewey Decimal devotees everywhere … but not too loudly. Shhh!
• “Stress Awareness Day”. Stress can be defined as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. It is a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges and threats in our lives. (So, today, do something about it!)
• “World Semicolon Day”, to celebrate those who chose not to end their lives because their stories are not over yet. Why the semicolon? When authors use semicolons, it shows that a sentence is not yet ended…and the story is not yet over. Suicide survivors mark the day by sharing their stories, to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.
