Ahhh, It’s Your Daily Constitutional Sheet!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Following the tragic outbreak of violence in Charlottesville, Barack Obama has spoken out with an important quote from one of the world’s greatest leaders – Nelson Mandela – and it’s become one of the most liked Tweets in history. The initial post has received more than 3.2 million likes and 1.2 million re-Tweets.  The Tweet? “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion”, Obama wrote, alongside a photograph of himself smiling through a window at a group of multi-racial children.

★ Tom Cruise is expected to be out of action for months after breaking two bones in his ankle during a stunt on the set of ‘Mission: Impossible 6′.  Production on the film could be halted for up to four months as Cruise recovers from his injury, sustained while filming a sequence in which he was to jump from one building to another in London earlier this week.
(I feel the need…the need for a speedy recovery!)

★ Mindy Kaling has FINALLY confirmed she is pregnant with her first child. The actress, who still hasn’t revealed who the father is, admits that she is not sure what to expect. Quote: “It’s so unknown to me. I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands’, which is kind of a fun feeling”.
(No control? Out of your hands?  Wait until that kid is a teenager!)

★ Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are reportedly continuing with their divorce, despite recent claims that they may have called the process off .  Insiders say the reconciliation rumours ”couldn’t be further from the truth”.  They added: ”Both sides are hashing out child custody and property settlements, and the divorce is full steam ahead.”

★ Captain Jack Sparrow secretly slipped into a children’s hospital in Vancouver on Monday and the kids couldn’t have been more thrilled!  Actor Johnny Depp dressed up as his popular ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ alter ego before visiting BC Children’s Hospital. Depp spent more than five hours hanging out with sick young kids and their families in the oncology, general pediatrics and neurology wards.

★ The best prize any Thor fan could hope to own is set to go on sale. Chris Hemsworth’s hammer from the Marvel movie series is expected to fetch $80,000 at auction alongside a number of other rare pieces of movie memorabilia next month.  Other items of interest: Peter Quill’s helmet from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as worn by Chris Pratt and Jack Nicholson’s Joker costume from 1989’s ‘Batman’.  Hemsworth is wielding a brand new hammer in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, coming on November 3rd.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Justin Bieber – may have pulled off the road, but he has some new music to promote.  He took to social media to announce that he will be releasing a brand new single today.  Bieber posted the cover art for the new track “Friends,” which features a collaboration with Bloodpop (aka producer/songwriter Michael Tucker).
• Taylor Swift – sketching her is ‘hard’ because of her beauty.  So says courtroom artist Jeff Kandyba.  Because cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, the closest anyone had to seeing Swift in the trial was through Kandyba’s work. And many Swift fans criticized his drawings on social media.  (At least he didn’t ask to have his picture taken with her!)
•  Pink – will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the 2017 MTV VMAs in California on August 27. It is the highest honor available to artists at the show – and has previously been bestowed upon the likes of Madonna, Beyoncé, and last year’s winner Rihanna.
• Ted Nugent – says his support of the National Rifle Association has stopped him from being inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame. Nugent believes Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation member Jann Wenner is keeping him out because Nugent is on the board of directors of the National Rifle Association. (Maybe.  But there are a lot of people in there who have done worse!)
• Elvis Presley – his baby grand piano will be auctioned on eBay. It was built in 1912 and installed in the Music Room at Graceland for 12 years between 1957 and 1969.
• Lionel Richie – his grandchildren call him ‘Pop Pop’. The 68-year-old singer’s daughter Nicole Richie has two kids, seven-year-old Sparrow and nine-year-old Harlow, and they had no idea their grandfather was famous until they saw him perform live for the first time a few years ago.
(Now then, could someone please explain why Nicole is famous?)
• Robert Plant – is teasing a new single with a 28-second clip posted to his website and social media channels. Its presumed title: ‘A Way With Words’.
• Skid Row – guitarist Scotti Hill has ruled out a reunion with former singer Sebastian Bach.  He admits the band and Bach have had talks but ultimately it was decided to stick with current singer ZP Theart. Quote: “That door is now shut”.
• Blake Shelton – has announced plans for a six-song live EP, ‘Blake Shelton (Live)’. It is set for release in late August.  Tracks include ‘Honey Bee’, ‘Boys ‘Round Here’, and ‘A Guy With a Girl’.
• Carrie Underwood – was one of two country artists to take home Teen Choice Awards when it aired Sunday.  Underwood earned Choice Country Artist, while Sam Hunt‘s “Body Like A Back Road” earned Choice Country Song.

IT’S LIKE NETFLIX…BUT AT THE THEATER!
As movie theaters struggle with lukewarm sales, Mitch Lowe, who is a former Netflix executive,  has an extreme way to get people back into seats: Let them come to all the movies they want for a flat rate.  Lowe has started a company called ‘MoviePass’.  With Moviepass, you pay U.S. $9.95 per month to subscribe, and you get in to one movie every day at any theater in the U.S. that accepts debit cards. MoviePass will pay theaters the full price of each ticket used by subscribers, excluding 3D or Imax screens.  MoviePass actually started in 2011, but this week announced that prices would drop from around $30 per month to $9.95 to attract a larger subscriber base.  Can they make money?  Probably not at that price, but they also plan to collect data on viewing behaviors. That information could then be used to eventually target advertisements or other marketing materials to subscribers through their app, which also contains theater listings.
(Fantastic.  Now can we work the same deal for movie theater snacks?)
(And $11 next year…and $12 the next year…and $13 the year after that…)
(Phew! When they said they had an idea to get more people going to the movies, I was afraid someone had come up with another super-hero movie!)

EASY STREET:
Here’s the good news about exercise that you’ve been waiting to hear!  Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak, the fitness guru responsible for whipping famous hot people like Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga into shape, has a new theory about burning body fat that’s going to have you jumping – or rather walking – for joy:  He says the best way to burn body fat is…walking.  Yup.  Not running, not crossfit, not spin class and thankfully, not crunches.  He says yes, high-intensity cardio does burn more calories per minute than walking, but a higher percentage of those calories come from non-fat sources, whereas low-intensity cardio, such as prolonged walking, heads straight to fat stores for energy to burn. Works for me!  He also points out that when you do a high-intensity workout, yes, you burn a lot of calories, but not a lot of fat. And burning that many calories in such a short amount of time makes you really, really hungry, which means you usually end up eating something that basically replaces the calories you just  burnt off.  He does point out, though, that high-intensity exercise does have many other benefits beyond burning off body fat.
(So walking is the best way to burn fat.  Unless you are walking to the hot dog cart!)
(So it’s not just me who has frequent-flyer points at the pizza place beside the gym?)
(I’m just not 100% sure that it’s working for Kim K., though…)

SPARE PARTS:
Here are some body parts that we could all live just fine without:
❑  Arrector Pili Muscles: These are tiny, tiny muscles attached to our hair follicles. They’re what give us goosebumps by contracting in order to make the hair stand up. Yeah, we don’t really need them.  (They don’t do much good, do they?)

❑ Tailbone: This is actually a group of fused vertebrae at the bottom of the spine. Also called the Coccyx’, these bones are what’s left of our tails.  Don’t need it.  And when you slip on the ice, you don’t WANT it!  (But it would be cool to have a tail, wouldn’t it?)

❑ The Philtrum: This is the small dent between your nose and upper lip. When we’re forming in the womb, it’s where our face connects. When it doesn’t connect correctly, babies are born with a cleft palate. Once that’s done though, there’s no need for it.  It’s basically just a visible seam from manufacturing.  (So it’s not something that is there to direct things when your nose is running?)

❑ The Palmaris Muscle: This runs from the elbow to the wrist and is a narrow muscle that we really don’t use for anything. It’s theorized that it was once used for hanging and climbing, but now surgeons harvest it for reconstructive surgeries if needed.  (I think my teenager still uses his, because all he does is ‘hang around’.)

❑ The Plantaris Muscle: About 9% of people are born without this muscle (which is in the foot). For those who are…it’s not really of any benefit. Unless you’re a primate grasping things with your feet.  (You haven’t seen me drop something and try to avoid having to stand up!)

❑ Body Hair:  We have explanations and uses for the hair on our head – insulate our body temp, keep sweat out of our eyes…But what, exactly, is back and chest hair for? We don’t really “need” body hair.  (But a lot of people make a lot of money helping you get rid of it…)

❑ Darwin’s Point: Some people have a small folded bit of skin towards the top of their ear. It’s called Darwin’s Point.  It’s a remnant of when our ears needed to be shaped differently for survival, as such a shape would’ve allowed us to hear distant sounds, alerting us to both danger and potential foods.  (I’m pretty sure I still use this to tell when the ice-cream man is coming!)

❑ Adenoids: Like your tonsils, these are lymphoid tissue.  They are located in the throat at the very back of the nose. Supposedly they’re part of the immune system and trap bacteria to help keep you healthy as a child, and then shrink and become useless as we age. Some children have to have theirs removed and it doesn’t seem to cause many issues. (Yup. Just shrunken lil’ knobs of useless tissue, hanging out.)

❑ Gallbladder:  The gallbladder is a pouch that holds bile (made by the liver) and slowly releases it into the digestive tract. It also makes painful stones and can cause other problems.  Most people that need to have it removed don’t notice much of a difference.  (But it sounds so nice, it’d be a shame to lose it…)

❑ “Redundancy Organs”: We have a lot of redundancy organs. Yes, technically they aren’t useless, they’re actually quite awesome. But you could happily get by your whole life with one kidney, or only one ovary, or only one testicle. If you lose one, the other compensates.  (Yes, even the testicle.)

❑ Auricular Muscles: There is a group of muscles that surround the ear and are used by some animals to move their ears around towards noises or to flatten them.  Humans have these too, but they serve no purpose. It’s why some people can wiggle their ears; they’ve learned to control these muscles.  (Well, it IS a good party trick.  THAT’S a use!)

❑ Male Nipples:  We all start out in the womb as female. Because of this, men still have nipples. (Although they would sure look funny without them!)

(Oh yeah, and the tonsils, appendix, and wisdom teeth…but you knew that!)
