★ Casey Affleck’s wife Summer Phoenix has filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The two separated a year ago. Summer, whose siblings include actors Joaquin Phoenix and the late River Phoenix, told the court she is seeking spousal support in addition to joint physical and legal custody of their two sons, 13-year-old Indiana and nine-year-old Atticus.

★ As has been reported, playwright, author and Sam Shepard has died from complications from ALS at the age of 73. Shepard was nominated for an Oscar in 1983 for his role in “The Right Stuff.” He also had a very successful career off-screen. He won a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1979 for his play “Buried Child,” one of 40 he wrote over the years. What you might NOT know is that he was also a musician of note. Shepard played banjo on a Patti Smith recording of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and co-wrote Bob Dylan’s epic ‘Brownsville Girl’. Most recently, he starred in Netflix’s “Bloodline” in 2015 and was in this year’s ‘Never Here,’ which hit movie theaters in June. Shepard’s long relationship with the actress Jessica Lange cast an unwanted spotlight on his private life. He described the attention as “terrible and impossible.” Appropriate quote: “I hate endings. ★ Jessica Lange (****SEE PREVIOUS STORY****) has blasted ”ageism” in the entertainment industry. The 68-year-old actress – who made her movie debut in 1976’s ‘King Kong’ – thinks it is shocking there are few older women landing ”romantic leads” but male stars of her age will get similar parts opposite much younger co-stars. According to Lange, ”Ageism is pervasive in this industry. It’s not a level playing field”. Jessica Lange was the late Sam Shepard’s partner from 1982-2009. They had 2 children together. Hannah Jane Shepard, 31 and Samuel Walker Shepard, 30.

★ Kevin Hart has announced his plans to run the New York City Marathon on Nov. 5th after being inspired by Kenyan long distance runner Eliud Kipchoge. In a video posted on the weekend, Hart encourages others to take a ‘moonshot’ and ends with: “I got little legs, but a big heart.” The 38 year-old is a passionate runner and has been training seriously since 2015.

★ ‘Dancing with the Stars’ producers are “seriously considering” adding Bachelor in Paradise’s DeMario Jackson to the cast of season 25 competitors. Producers reached out weeks ago, but so far no contract has been signed. Last week, Jackson boasted that he’d ‘murder’ a salsa number set to Luis Fonsi’s hit song ‘Despacito’.

★ HBO has joined the ranks of Hollywood entertainment companies to suffer a major cyber attack. Upcoming episodes of ‘Ballers’ and ‘Room 104′ and at least one script or treatment that’s allegedly from this weekend’s fourth episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ have been put online by hackers who breached the company’s systems — with more threatened to be coming soon.

★ Shia LaBeouf’s ‘Borg/McEnroe’ has been announced as the opening night film for the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival. He made headlines after he was arrested in early July for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. LeBeouf plays John McEnroe in the movie. (So it’s nice to have a Shia story that doesn’t have him behaving badly. Oh wait….he plays John McEnroe. Never mind.)

• Paul McCartney – told a group of students that he has written a song about Donald Trump. Quote: “Sometimes the situation in the world is so crazy, that you’ve got to address it”.
• The Rolling Stones – will release a 50th Anniversary Edition of their 1967 album ‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’ on September 22.
• Elvis Presley – a British fan who placed a bet that The King did not die in 1977 will receive a payout of $460,000 if Elvis is found alive by the end of this year. His wager? About $33.
• Ashlee Simpson held an Andy Warhol-themed second birthday party for her daughter. Simpson and her husband Evan Ross celebrated Jagger Snow’s birthday with vinyl CD cakes and a big birthday cake inspired by Warhol’s 1962 artwork Campbell’s Soup Cans. (I’m sure her daughter was thrilled)
• Liam Gallagher – is open to meeting his 20-year-old daughter Molly for the first time. He has reached out and made it known that he would be ”open” to speaking to her if she got in touch.
• Georgia Satellites – former frontman Dan Baird has canceled tour dates with his current bands Dan Baird & Homemade Sin and the Yayhoos while he seeks medical attention for an inherited form of leukemia.
• Sam Hunt – says that contrary to recent reports, he does NOT have a timeline for recording new music. The newly-married artist says he has different priorities now and isn’t willing to “give 100% of me anymore.” He recently broke Florida Georgia Line’s record for consecutive number of weeks at number one with his hit single, ‘Body Like a Back Road’.
• Joe Nichols – has released his first album in four years. He describes “Never Gets Old” as ‘retro sounding’.
• MTV – is changing the VMA Moonman to a gender-neutral award. In addition to some modified categories at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, the network announced a major change on how they will refer to their iconic trophy. The “Moonman” is out, and the “Moon Person” is in.

We may soon have a definitive answer to the age-old question of whether wine tastes better from a corked or a screw-cap bottle. Scientists at Oxford University are conducting a study using brain-scanning technology to test how the sounds, aromas, and sensations associated with opening a wine bottle influence their taste buds. Volunteers will wear brain-scanning headwear which monitors their pleasure receptors as they take part in a series of tests. Why? The team of scientists have taken it upon themselves to end years of debate among the wine industry and consumers about which method produces the best taste.
(Also, it was the only way they could find anyone to drink with them!)

It appears as though you have another reason to dread your next birthday. According to a study in Social Science and Nutrition, your chance of dying spikes more than 25% on your birthday. Why? Well, it seems that people tend to celebrate their birthdays. And that can involve risky behavior. Examples? You tend to chug alcohol on your birthday. (No? Most do.) And your birthday could involve driving. And stress. And if your birthday falls on a weekend, it is even MORE likely to be your last. Other days that the odds against you increase include Christmas Day, New Year’s Day (duh!), and your payday! Even worse? The second payday of the month.

THE L.E.D.-ING CAUSE OF HEADACHES:
Energy-saving lightbulbs could be giving us all headaches. That’s the word from a psychology professor. Because they ‘flicker’, LED bulbs can bring on feelings of dizziness and pain within just 20 minutes of switching them on, says Arnold Wilkins, professor of psychology at the University of Essex. He says the flickering of LED lights is stronger than for traditional lightbulbs. While fluorescent lights, like those in offices and schools, dim by around 35 per cent with every flicker, LED lights dim by 100 per cent. That means they effectively turn off and on again hundreds of times every second. This can cause headaches by disrupting movement control of the eyes, forcing the brain to work harder. Previous studies have also said that flickering LED bulbs could double the chances of suffering a headache.
