★ CBS will mark 50 years of contestants ‘comin’ on down’ for “The Price Is Right” with a 2-hour primetime special next month. Set for September 30, the special will look back at the biggest winners, never-before-seen outtakes and a salute to Bob Barker. More than 68,000 contestants have played The Price Is Right since its debut on September 4, 1972, and 2 million-plus have been in its studio audience. The first prize ever offered on the show was a Chevy Vega worth $2,800 — some 8,400 car giveaways have ensued.

★ Selma Blair says she’s in remission from multiple sclerosis as a result of undergoing a stem cell transplant. Best known for such movies as “Cruel Intentions,” “Legally Blonde” and “Hellboy,” the 49-year-old was diagnosed with the disease in 2018. Blair told a Television Critics Association panel that her “prognosis is great.” She underwent hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation which uses stem cells derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath that covers nerve fibers. It can cause vision loss, pain, fatigue and impaired coordination.

★ Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to “Field of Dreams”, a new show based on the Oscar-nominated film. This comes amid a surge in popularity for the 1989 film starring Kevin Costner, following Major League Baseball’s “Field of Dreams” game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox last week. It was the most-watched regular-season baseball telecast on any network since 2005, and Fox’s most-streamed regular-season game in its history.

★ “The Talk” is looking for a new co-host to replace Carrie Ann Inaba, and they are reportedly hoping to bring another man to the table. The CBS talk show already broke its all-female hosting streak by adding Jerry O’Connell earlier this year. A source says: “They haven’t announced it, but Carrie Ann is not returning, and they’ve been trying out comics and athletes to take her place.” Inaba had already announced that she was taking a leave of absence from the show to focus on her “health and well-being,” but this is the strongest confirmation yet that she won’t be coming back at all.

• Lady Gaga – Barbra Streisand, who starred in 1976’s “A Star is Born” took another look at the 2018 version that Gaga starred in – and didn’t like what she saw. Babs, who previously lavished praise upon Bradley Cooper’s Oscar-winning directing debut, recently said it “was the wrong idea, but…it was a big success, so I can’t argue with success, but I don’t care so much about success as I do originality.”
• The Weeknd – His hit ‘Blinding Lights’ is spending a record-breaking 88th week on the Billboard Hot 100. It has now passed Imagine Dragons’ ‘Radioactive’, which spent 87 weeks on the chart in 2012-14. Blinding Lights debuted at #11 on the Hot 100 dated Dec. 14, 2019.
• Blink-182 – Travis Barker has flown on a plane for the first time since surviving a deadly plane crash 13 years ago. Saturday, the drummer took a flight to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, from Los Angeles with his girlfriend, Kourtney Kardashian. He hadn’t traveled by air since 2008 when his business jet crashed in South Carolina, critically injuring him with burns to 65% of his body, and killing 4 others.
• Madonna – On her 63rd birthday Monday, she announced a partnership with Warner that will see her entire catalog reissued, beginning in 2022, the 40th anniversary of her first single ‘Everybody’. Madonna will “personally curate expansive deluxe editions for many of her landmark albums”.
• Journey – has announced a 6-date Vegas residency. The group will play The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas between Dec. 1-11. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
• Kiss – has officially announced its second Las Vegas residency. Their engagement at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood will feature 12 shows between Dec. 29 and Feb. 5. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
• Dan + Shay – “Good Things,” released on Friday, has become the first country album in the streaming era to achieve RIAA Gold certification at release. The news comes as the duo’s current single ‘Glad You Exist’ hits the top spot on the Billboard and Mediabase Country Airplay charts, marking their sixth consecutive and ninth career #1.
• The Judds — have been announced as inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame. They will be honored in a ceremony next year, alongside R&B legend Ray Charles, who showed the commercial potential of country music when he released “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music” in 1962.
• Mark Chesnutt – has revealed that he’s tested positive for COVID-19 as he recovers from major back surgery. The ’90s hitmaker notched 8 #1 country songs in the 1990s, including ‘It Sure is Monday’. The 57-year-old wrote on Twitter that his wife Tracie has also tested positive.

TWO’S A CROWD:
Couples who sleep apart may not only be saving their relationship, but saving their health as well, according to a survey by the Better Sleep Council. Their research found that more than 25% of couples have gone through a “sleep divorce”, where they either sleep in different rooms or in 2 beds in the same room. The older you are, the more likely you are to sleep apart, with 16% of those 55-and-older saying they sleep in separate bedrooms. That’s more than double those who are 35-54 (7%), and significantly higher than those in the 18-34 group (3%). While many believe sleeping in separate beds is a sign that a relationship is on the rocks, it’s actually the opposite. The survey found 1 in 3 people say their bed partner has a negative impact on their own sleep. Sleep deprivation is connected to health issues including diabetes, obesity, heart disease and depression, as well as irritability, poorer job satisfaction and, yes, relationship woes. The survey found that women’s sleep suffers more than men’s, because “women are more sensitive to their sleep environment.”
(But if we slept apart, who would keep my back cool with their freezing cold feet?)

HAIR ME OUT:
Bald may be beautiful, but most people would rather keep their hair. And now, thanks to some researchers in China, it may be possible to get it back. They have developed a patch which can prevent baldness in both men and women. Male pattern baldness becomes permanent because the body doesn’t have enough blood vessels surrounding the hair follicles to deliver the necessary nutrients. The scientists came up with a microneedle patch that stimulates the formation of new blood vessels around the follicles, leading to hair regrowth. In tests on mice, it led to faster hair regrowth and similar coverage in comparison to a leading topical treatment for baldness. Topical hair treatments also need to be applied more frequently than the patch.
(Who knew there was such a thing as “mouse pattern baldness?)

WHAT A CONCEPT!
Vehicle manufacturer Audi has unveiled its latest concept car – and it’s a game-changer. Not only that, it’s a shape-shifter. The “skysphere” can not only drive itself, but when it makes the transition from human driving to self-driving, the body of the car expands by 10 inches (25cm) from end-to-end. The concept car’s long hood extends forward as the steering wheel and pedals fold away. The driver’s side of the dashboard and the gear selector also pull away, creating a more comfortable space for the driver to relax. A pair of blankets are rolled up behind the driver’s seat, ready to be used if the occupants would like to nap while the skysphere drives itself. Why make a car that “shifts shape” depending on whether a human is driving? Audi says that self-driving vehicles can, theoretically, be safer than human drivers, and offer opportunities to rethink what a car can and should be. But one of the challenges is consumer adoption from people who actually enjoy driving…at least some of the time.
(They’ve been working on a self-driving car for a while, but just kept hitting one obstacle after another…)
(So instead of making the drive shorter, they’ve made the car longer?)
(The good news? Teenage car fatalities will plummet to record lows. The bad news? Teenage pregnancy rates will skyrocket!)

MYTHS ABOUT THE HUMAN BODY THAT YOU’VE SEEN OVER AND OVER:

☞ Swallowed gum stays in your gut for 7 years: Yes, the digestive system has problems breaking gum down. But although gum can stick around for a week or so, it’s eventually going to be disposed of. (Does anyone still believe that story? Aside from 2nd-graders?)
☞ Shaving your body hair makes it grow back thicker or darker: It’s only a trick of perception, because shaving gives the follicles a blunt tip, rather than a tapered one. (Except around my grandmother’s mole. That thing just keeps getting darker and darker!)
☞ We only have 5 senses: No one is actually sure how many we have. John M. Henshaw, a mechanical engineering professor who wrote “A Tour of the Senses: How Your Brain Interprets the World”, thinks we have 9: the original 5, plus balance, temperature, proprioception (body awareness), and pain.
☞ Zapping someone whose heart stopped will save them: If a person has flatlined, the correct procedure is CPR and a high dose of adrenaline. Instead of starting a stopped heart, a defibrillator is meant to correct “arrhythmia or erratic heartbeat.” (Any idea how many TV shows and movies we’ve just ruined?)
☞ Fingernails continue to grow after death: While the nails and hair on a corpse may seem like they’ve continued growing, what you’re seeing is the skin around them retracting as it becomes dehydrated, making them appear longer. (GREAT party trick, though…Halloween party.)
☞ Rust gives you tetanus: Not really. We associate rust with the bacteria that causes tetanus because the bacteria is often found in soil that’s rich in organic material that also makes metal rust. Plus, a rusty nail creates the perfect “tunnel” through which the bacteria can enter the body. (But you should still make sure you’re up-to-date on your tetanus shot. Especially if you have a car that’s anything like mine!)
☞ Urine is sterile: Nope. Multiple studies have found bacteria in the urine of healthy humans. It may be harmless, or present in small amounts, but it’s there. (Well, gotta go…)

According to the old saying, “Revenge is a dish best served cold”, but it seems most people prefer to strike right away, according to a study. Despite the Hollywood depiction of people savoring sweet revenge after months or years of plotting, a team from Virginia Commonwealth University found that 58% of us would prefer to take immediate revenge, even if it means dealing a lesser blow to an enemy. The study also found that most of the 1,500 people surveyed would prefer quick revenge even over receiving money.
