BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The man suspected of stabbing author Salman Rushdie in western New York pleaded not guilty Saturday to attempted murder in the second degree and other charges. 24-year-old Hadi Matar is accused of stabbing Rushdie — whose controversial work has triggered death threats — at a speaking engagement on Friday. Matar, a New Jersey resident, also was charged with assault in the second degree, with intent to cause physical injury with a deadly weapon. He was refused bail and remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail. Matar’s next court appearance is Friday. Rushdie’s agent says he is off a ventilator and talking, but likely to lose an eye, and he suffered nerve damage in his arm, and a stabbed liver.

★ The investigation around Anne Heche’s car crash has come to an end, says the LAPD. Friday, the same day that the 53-year-old actress died from injuries sustained in the crash, police confirmed that authorities would no longer be pursuing an investigation. In a statement, LAPD said: “Any information or records that have been requested prior to this turn of events will still be collected as they arrive as a matter of formalities and included in the overall case. When a person suspected of a crime expires, we do not present for filing consideration.” After Heche smashed into an LA home on Aug. 5, police issued a warrant for blood analysis and announced that a DUI investigation was ongoing.

★ The gun used in the fatal shooting on the “Rust” movie set could not have been fired without pulling the trigger, according to an FBI forensic report. Alec Baldwin shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western, which he was producing and starring in, last year. Baldwin believed he was handling a “cold gun” — one without live ammunition – but a live bullet struck Hutchins, killing her. The film’s director, Joel Souza, was also wounded in the shooting. The FBI report says: “With the hammer fully cocked, the gun ‘could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger while the working internal components were intact and functional’. Baldwin has repeatedly insisted that he did not pull the trigger.

Her sister said Dowse was most proud of “Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story,” a picture she directed that premiered at the Pan African Film Festival in April. SHOOTING THE BULL

SHOWER POWER:
Monday morning, and it feels like you only slept for a few hours – again. If you’re looking to get better quality zzzzzzzs, a sleep specialist suggests you include a shower in your bedtime routine. Olivia Arezzolo, author of “Bear, Lion, Wolf”, say the pandemic caused the average person’s sleep to get worse, with some people spending hundreds these days on supplements to improve their rest. And with our busy schedules these days, and high levels of anxiety and stress, things aren’t getting any better. She says to minimize the amount of time it takes to drift off, and to ensure maximum benefits from your sleep, you should:
• Shut off technology, as blue lights from phones, laptops, tablets and televisions are known to impact sleep.
• Take a shower, as it promotes melatonin when the water brings your body temperature down.
• Integrate calming scents in your body wash, such as lavender and vetiver. Both reduce activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which can otherwise make you feel tense.
• In the bedroom, create a sanctuary with no screens, a spritz of calming scents in a pillow spray and a dab on your pulse points.
• Meditate or read for 20 minutes.
(Oh…one more thing! Send the kids to Grandma’s!)
(And then, if you’re anything like me, you’ll blow it all by checking your phone ‘one more time’…and get stuck on TikTok for an hour and a half!)

TIP TIPOFF:

You probably tip the person who cuts your hair. And the person who delivers your dinner. How about the person cutting your lawn? More and more often, we’re seeing a gratuity option on card payment machines in industries where tipping didn’t used to be customary. Think: Fast food chains. And auto mechanics. This modern phenomenon, known as “tip creep”, is causing some online discussion. Some, for whom the practice leaves a bad taste in their mouth, are venting about being asked if they’d like to pay an extra 15% or more on top of the price of takeout pizza, and oil change, or propane tank refill. Why now? For one, as customers shift away from carrying cash, it’s easier than ever for any business to ask for a bit extra by adding the automatic prompt to the card payment machine — what psychologists call a “tip nudge”. For another, as we learned in the depths of the pandemic, people who perform an essential service are sometimes undervalued – and very important. Inflation is another likely driver: faced with rising costs, employers may view tips as a way to address workers’ demands for higher pay without actually increasing their wages.
(Well, that doesn’t seem fair, either!)
(Yeah, I’m not quite sure why I feel compelled to pay an extra dollar or 2 to the guy who grabs me a beer from the fridge behind him — but the guy who fixes a tire to keep my family safe – nada!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:

➢ It could restore sight for the up to 13 million people who have gone blind due to diseased corneas. Researchers have developed an implant made of collagen protein from pig’s skin, and restored vision to 20 people. The promising result of the trial brings hope to those suffering from corneal blindness and low vision by providing a bioengineered implant as an alternative to the transplantation of donated human corneas, which are scarce. Professor Neil Lagali, at Linköping University in Sweden, said “The results show that it is possible to develop a biomaterial that meets all the criteria for being used as human implants, which can be mass-produced and stored up to 2 years and thereby reach even more people with vision problems.”  Currently, just one in 70 patients receives a human cornea transplant.
➢ A caregiver surprised the adults she supports by asking them to be her bridesmaids. Kayrin Callaghan of Cornwall, England, says when her fiancé proposed, she instantly knew she wanted the adults she supports, all of whom have Down syndrome, to be a part of her special day. She has struck up a special relationship with Jamie, Daisy, Francesca and Chloe, who range in age from 18-26, by enjoying trips to the local swimming pool and cinema together. She asked the 4 of them to be her “flowermaids” by getting them to open boxes full of balloons. All 4 were ecstatic and are already planning a bachelorette party for bride-to-be. Callaghan says there were plenty of happy tears when asked them to participate in her wedding, and she’s planning a “Disney-inspired Halloween wedding, so they’ll get to wear princess dresses.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Richer people are dining more often at family-style chain restaurants like Applebee’s and IHOP these days. In the quarter ending June 30, sales at the 2 chains grew 8% among households earning over $75,000 per year, as cash-strapped American consumers swap higher-priced goods for more affordable alternatives. And while that can be good news for Applebee’s and IHOP, there’s also a flip-side: Both brands saw their sales drop among households earning under $50,000 a year. Why? Dine CEO John Peyton, whose company owns both restaurants, says: “We assume that they’ve left us for lower-cost options.” (That, or that dang ‘Applebee’s’ song is driving them away!)
