BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Ed Sheeran – His song royalties have been frozen following new allegations that his hit ‘Shape Of You’ is lifted from Sam Chokri’s 2015 song ‘Oh Why’, and that Sheeran’s songs also include “stolen” material from TLC and Shaggy. He’s also currently fighting claims he stole elements from Marvin Gaye’s 1973 hit ‘Let’s Get It On’.
• Demi Lovato – As part of her comeback, she has a few acting gigs lined up. She will guest star in three episodes in the upcoming 11th and final season of “Will & Grace”, and she’s landed a role in Will Ferrell’s new Netflix satire “Eurovision”.
• Journey – guitarist Neal Schon will make a guest appearance on former Journey and Santana singer Gregg Rolie’s first new studio album in 18 years, “Sonic Ranch”, out Oct. 11. The first single ‘What About Love’ is streaming now. Rolie says the song was inspired by Ringo Starr’s message of peace and love.
• Elton John — In a booklet included in the new “Rocketman” DVD, he explains why he finally decided to write his autobiography “Me” (out Oct. 15). He says that he had never been interested in looking back for fear of “convincing yourself that everything was better in the past than it is now. If you start thinking that as an artist, you might as well give up writing music for a living and retire.”
• Buckcherry – singer Josh Todd says he used a good old fashioned answering machine to record himself when he came up with the chorus for the group’s notorious hit “Crazy Bitch” — on his mother’s machine. He says that the inspiration for the song came about when Paris Hilton’s intimate home videos surfaced on the Internet.
• Rodney Atkins — It’s another baby boy for him and his wife Rose Falcon. She gave birth to their second son on Monday in Nashville. Scout Falcon Atkins checked in at 8 lbs., 11 oz. at birth, and both mother and baby are doing fine.
• Brad Paisley – The free grocery store that he and his wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley are building to benefit Nashville families in need will receive a $1.5 million grant from the Department of Human Services to support The Store’s mission of providing food while maintaining a dignified shopping experience for low-income families.

POSITIVELY OLD:
Smile! Whether you want to or not. Because no one likes a grouch, and it may help you to live longer. A new study has found that being a Debbie Downer could shorten your life, and being a glass-half-full kind of person just might help you live longer. The study mostly looked at women — nearly 70,000 ladies participated, along with about 1,500 men. They completed a survey that ranked their level of optimism, tracking the women for 10 years and the men for 30 years. And it was found that those who have a more positive outlook have an 11 to 15% longer lifespan, and 50 to 70% greater odds of reaching 85 years old compared to those who are less optimistic. And even after accounting for health behaviors such as alcohol use, diet and exercise, the researchers found that their cheeriest participants lived longer than the killjoys. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
(I was afraid that’s what they were going to say…)
(What if someone is positive that they aren’t going to live very long?)
(It doesn’t look good for me. I not only expect the worst, I make the worst of it when it happens.)

DEPARTMENT OF DUH:

People who receive financial incentives to exercise from their employers were found to engage in more physical activity. But once the incentive is stopped, according to a recent study published in JAMA, people’s exercise habits tend to taper off. Researchers monitored physical activity of 3,500 people, recording their daily steps through a pedometer, and awarding them points redeemable for cash. They found that people who receive financial incentives constantly over time, at a consistent rate, tend to exercise more.
(“And THAT, boss, is why I take 26 trips to the break room every day…”)
(These people are walking more, but it’s definitely not to find another job!)
(The only job I’ve ever had where I was paid to take more steps also involved a lawn mower!)

“CAN’T EVEN” GET DIVORCED:
Millennials have been blamed for ruining everything from casual dining to bar soap to the real estate industry to the major beer corporations. And what have they ruined now? According to a University of Maryland study, now they have ruined…divorce. People in the millennial age category are largely taking a different approach to marriage these days. Rather than the “traditional” approach, which involves marrying young and then divorcing, millennials are waiting until they are older to get married, which gives them a chance to get their careers established before they tie the knot and start a family. And partly because of this, the divorce rate in America dropped by 18 percent between 2008 and 2016. While it is true that overall, these days fewer people are choosing to marry at all, which could have a lot to do with falling divorce rates, the study shows that because millennials are waiting to marry until they are financially secure (and perhaps a bit more mature), they are less likely to divorce.
(So they haven’t ruined divorce…but they just may have ruined the divorce industry!)
(My Mom always said “Don’t marry for money. Divorce for money!”)
(They are waiting until they are financially secure to get married? I thought they were waiting until they beat Super Mario Maker 2!)

TRAITS OF HIGHLY INTELLIGENT PEOPLE:
✓ You’re Empathetic And Compassionate:  There’s a correlation between high emotional intelligence and high IQ. Empathy, which is part of emotional intelligence, and comprehension, which is part of cognitive intelligence, are directly linked. (I must be empathetic….because I really feel sorry for stupid people…!)
✓ You’re Curious About the World:  Being smart is not about having the ability to go through a number of books a day. It’s about having a curiosity about anything and everything. Intelligent people like learning about other people, cultures, animals, history, and the world at large. (As long as there isn’t a test!)
✓ You’re Observant:  In a world where people talk to try to sound smart, highly intelligent people are often quiet and observant, taking everything in, and seeing things that others missed.
✓ You Have Self-Control:  That means you have maturity. You can control your emotions and impulses so they won’t cause harm. It’s a sign of intelligence because it means you’re more likely to think before you speak or act. (And it only took me 37 years to get get this way!)
✓ You Have A Good Working Memory:  It is closely correlated with general intelligence. A good working memory includes executive functioning skills, good short-term memory, the ability to focus and pay attention. It also means you can easily transition from one thing to another. (You know who else has a good working memory? My 3-year-old. And my dog.)
✓ You Recognize Your Limits:  Highly intelligent people don’t try to act as if they know everything. A sign of intelligence is recognizing the fact that you don’t know everything. This allows you to be open to learning more from others and/or situations. (Just this morning, I recognized the limits of my patience!)
✓ You Like To Go With The Flow:  If you know how to be flexible, there’s a good chance you’re highly intelligent. It basically shows that you can solve problems and find solutions quickly.
(I’m just glad there was nothing in there about math!)

DID YOU KNOW?
The first known use of “OMG” was in a letter to Winston Churchill in 1917. Lord Fisher, an admiral and naval innovator, wrote to the British Prime Minister and was obviously excited about a possible honor for himself and those in his line of work. He wrote, “I hear a new order of Knights in on the tapis—O.M.G. (Oh! My God!)”
