BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Hallmark Channel has aired its first LGBTQ wedding. On Saturday night, the network premiered a new original movie titled “Wedding Every Weekend”, in which a couple fall in love as they realize they keep attending the same string of marriages. Over the course of the movie, the two main characters experience diverse ceremonies, including one between two women — an on-screen first for Hallmark. The inclusion of a lesbian wedding comes a month after Hallmark issued a statement promising new LGBTQ storylines, characters and actors would be included in future programming.

★ Simon Cowell has turned to healing crystals to help him recover after breaking his back. He suffered the devastating injury on Aug. 8 when he fell off his new electric bike, and some friends placed crystals around his hospital bed to help him get better. According to a source, ”Most people wouldn’t put Simon down as having crystals but he and (partner) Lauren have them around their home. He’s in good spirits and his back is well on the mend.” He was released from hospital late last week.

★ Elizabeth Debicki has been cast as Princess Diana for the final two seasons of Netflix’s “The Crown.” Debicki, who played ‘Ayesha’ in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, will portray the late royal on Seasons 5 and 6, taking over for Emma Corrin, who plays Diana in the upcoming fourth season, expected to debut later this year. Season 4 will cover Queen Elizabeth and the British royal family during the beginning of the Princess Diana era.

★ Jennifer Hudson and her sister, Julia, are giving back to Chicago students. They held their 10th annual “Hatch Day” giveaway on Friday where they donated 2,000 backpacks filled with supplies to Chicago kids in need. The sisters and 15 volunteers helped deliver the backpacks throughout the city, and they weren’t empty. They were filled with items like face masks, hand sanitizer and tablets. The foundation was created in honor of Jennifer’s nephew and Julia’s son, Julian D. King, who was killed in 2008.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Adele – isn’t sure when she’ll release new music. After she took to Insta to recommend a book to fans, a commenter asked: “Adele where’s the album?” Adele’s response? “I honestly have no idea”.
• Katy Perry – isn’t planning a lengthy maternity leave after she gives birth. She’s due any day now, but says she plans to tour as soon as the pandemic is over. Her new album “Smile” comes out Aug. 28.
• Nipsey Hussle — A celebrity jewelry designer has created a $30,000 diamond football cleat pendant and is giving the proceeds to the rapper’s foundation for what would have been his 35th birthday. The stunning pendant has the rapper’s “Crenshaw” logo emblazoned on the shoe, and features the message “You Gotta Go Hard, You Gotta Believe In Yourself.”
• Evanescence — As part of her “One-Minute Jam” series on YouTube, guitarist Jen Majura has teamed up with Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain and Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra to record a cover of Wings’ 1973 Bond theme ‘Live And Let Die’. On Friday, Evanescence released the new single ‘Use My Voice’.
• The Beatles — Liverpool’s historic Cavern Club where they made almost 300 appearances in the early ‘60s may close permanently, due to Covid-19. The iconic venue was recently forced to let go 20 of its employees, with more layoffs expected, and the city’s Mayor says if its bid to the Government’s Cultural Recovery Fund fails, the club will close indefinitely.
• Honeymoon Suite – The Niagara Falls, ON band has hit the Canadian top 30 rock charts for the first time in 19 years thanks to their new single ‘Find What You’re Looking For’, the title cut from their upcoming album.
• Gabby Barrett – She and her husband Cade Foehner are expecting their first child. The couple found out they’re having a baby girl in May, but never revealed the news publicly until Sunday.
• Tim McGraw – says his new album “Here on Earth” has 18 songs because he was considering a double album, but “it’s tough to do that in this environment”, and he could only narrow the 25 songs he had down to 18. He describes the new song ‘Chevy Spaceship’ as his redneck ‘Rocket Man’.

NEXT OF KIN:
The makers of a new line of non-alcoholic drinks claim their drink can lift your mood and provide the “social lubrication” that booze does, without the hangover or other negative effects of alcohol consumption. Kin’s “euphoric beverages” won’t get you drunk, but they supposedly provide you with a range of “euphoric” feelings including warm, friendly sensations, greater clarity of focus, and a better sense of connection with others. They also claim it can “boost your brainpower”. One flavor, “Kin Spritz”, combines sparkling hibiscus with citrus and a bit of ginger. Kin is available online now.
(Sounds like it’d go good with gin!)
(And you can drink it at work – I may finally get along with Larry in accounting!)
(No booze? I know my kin isn’t going to go for it!)

HOME CHARGER:
Regular bricks can be transformed into energy storage devices, according to scientists at Washington University in St. Louis. Through a series of reactions, they say they have evidence that conventional bricks can be transformed into energy storage devices powerful enough to turn on LED lights, and could one day turn the walls of a home into a battery to store renewable energy. To allow the bricks to store electricity, the researchers pumped gases through the pores inside the bricks. The gases react with the brick’s chemical components, coating them with a plastic nanofiber, which is a good conductor of electricity. The process turned the bricks from their normal red hue to a dark shade of blue. Bricks have always been known for their capacity to store heat, but using them to hold electricity has never been tried before. The research team cautions that much more development is needed before these “smart bricks” are commercially available.
(Excuse me, I need to cancel an online order. Umm, for a friend. Heh-heh…)
(And this is better than just using a battery — how?)

MASKING BAD BREATH:
Sure, facemasks protect those around us from contracting COVID-19, but they’re also protecting people from something else – our breath. According to a new survey, 57% of us say they are now much more aware of their own bad breath thanks to wearing a face covering. Other results from the “Bad breath” survey of 3,000 Americans:
• 75% avoid kissing their partner in the morning because they’re very aware of their bad breath.
• 81% consider bad breath from another person a major turn off.
• 22% have ended a relationship over bad breath.
• 52% are concerned about their bad breath.
• 10% don’t even brush their teeth once daily.
(And some people say masks don’t work!)
(10% don’t brush once per day? I hope they’re part of the group that’s wearing a mask…)
(Coming soon: mint-scented masks!)

FORGOTTEN USES OF EVERYDAY THINGS:
➢ The hole in a pot handle:  While they’re also good for hanging pots and pans when they’re not in use, they were also designed to hold your spoon or spatula over the pot, so ‘drips drip’ into whatever you’re cooking, rather than onto the stovetop.
➢ The drawer under an oven:  Yes, you can keep pots and pans in there, but it is intended to be a ‘warming drawer’ to keep food hot while other dishes are cooking.
➢ The holes in a box of aluminum foil:  Ever seen the little indentations? Push them in, and a small hole is created, which can be pressed to lock the roll, meaning you’ll never have to deal with an unwieldly roll of tinfoil (or clingwrap) again.
➢ The loop on the back of a dress shirt:  Though it probably isn’t often used, it’s there to provide a way to hang up the shirt when there is no hanger available. Like at the gym. (Or in the public bathroom stall. Don’t judge me.)
➢ The glove compartment:  While most of us probably use it to hold just about everything BUT gloves, at one point, motorists actually used them to house their driving gloves, which were often needed in those early open-air vehicles.

DID YOU KNOW?
What good are goosebumps? Harvard University scientists say they are part of your body’s mechanism for growing more hair to keep you warm. Their study found muscles in the skin contract to make goosebumps. These muscles also form a bridge between nerves and stem cells in control of your hair. When it’s cold, your skin feels it and this system reacts. In the short-term, they’re giving you goosebumps. In the long-term, these nerves send out signals telling hair follicles to activate.

• “Mail Order Catalog Day”, it’s a publication, not unlike a magazine, that lists items available to buy from a business, and their prices (Old-school Amazon?)

• “Serendipity Day”, According to author Madeleine Kay, serendipity is “the willingness to live your life as if everything is a miracle…with the belief that at any moment something wonderful is about to happen.”

• “Pinot Noir Day”, named for the dark color of the grapes, and the pine-cone shaped clusters they grow in on the vine. Showing a strong preference for cooler climates, the grape of the same name is grown primarily in Burgundy, France.

TODAY’S SLICE OF BS:
