Good Morning, Sheetheads!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***UPDATE*** ★ Olivia Newton-John, who soared to international stardom as both a singer and movie star, has died. Her husband, John Easterling, said she died peacefully at her ranch in Southern California Monday morning, surrounded by family and friends. Though no cause of death was given,  Newton-John had battled breast cancer for more than 30 years. She hit it big in 1971 with songs like ‘If Not for You’, and in 1973 ‘Let Me Be There’ and its follow-up ‘Have You Never Been Mellow’. Her huge break came in 1978, when she starred opposite John Travolta in “Grease.” Her role as ‘Sandy’ was iconic, as were several songs from the movie, ‘You’re the One that I Want’, ‘Summer Nights’,  and ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’. Her biggest hit was ‘Physical’ in 1981, which stayed at #1 for 10 weeks. Olivia Newton-John was 73.

★ Anne Heche will have to give a blood sample to police after crashing her car into a home in Los Angeles. The LAPD received a warrant to test the “Six Days, Seven Nights” star’s blood to see if she was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol at the time of the crash, according to reports. Police believe Heche was intoxicated when she plowed her blue Mini Cooper into a house Friday and sustained severe burns after the vehicle caught fire, but blood test results could take weeks. Sources say that, at the minimum, the LAPD will refer Heche’s case to the LA City attorney, who could press hit-and-run charges, as she reportedly slammed into a garage and drove off before driving into the nearby house.

★ Kevin Smith has spoken out against Warner Bros.’ axing of “Batgirl”. During the latest episode of his “Hollywood Babble-On” YouTube show, the filmmaker called it “an incredible bad look” for the studio to drop the comic book tentpole, which was to be headlined by a Latina actor, especially when Warner Bros. is still moving forward on the release of its Ezra Miller-led “The Flash.” Smith said that he wasn’t concerned even if it was a horrible movie, and, quote, “I guarantee you that it wasn’t. The two directors…did a couple of episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel,’ and it was a wonderful…show and they had more money to do Batgirl.” Warner announced Aug. 2 that it would not be releasing the $90 million Batgirl in theaters or on HBO Max despite the movie being fully shot and in post-production.

★ Britney Spears has hit back at Kevin Federline after he revealed his sons with the pop star haven’t seen their mother “for months”. In an interview, Federline claimed their teen sons Sean Preston and Jayden had “decided” they didn’t want to see their mother or attend her recent wedding to Sam Asghari, and suggested they were embarrassed by her revealing Instagram posts. On her Instagram Story, Brit called the comments “hurtful”, writing: “It saddens me to hear that my ex-husband has decided to discuss the relationship between me and my children…it concerns me the fact that the reason is based on my Instagram … it was LONG before Instagram … I gave them every thing…My mother told me ‘You should GIVE them to their dad’ … I’m sharing this because I can … Have a good day folks!!!”

★ The ‘Titanic’ has been sunk again. “Top Gun: Maverick” has flown past the legendary blockbuster on the list of biggest money-makers in US box office history. Tom Cruise’s latest film, which has been on a roll since its release in May, is now in the #7 spot domestically, with $662 million in tickets sold, beating out James Cameron’s 1997 classic by about $3 million. ‘Maverick’ raked in $7 million over the weekend, which might not sound like much, but considering it’s in its 11th week in theaters, it’s pretty impressive. Other films still ahead of Top Gun 2 at the US box office include “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Black Panther” which had domestic hauls of $678M and $700M, respectively.

SHOOTING THE BULL

ROUTE PROBLEM:
If you’ve still got a road trip or 2 planned before the end of summer, here’s a piece of advice: Ditch the GPS. A memory expert in Montreal says she’s found an association between “habitual” use of GPS and spatial memory deterioration. Véronique Bohbot, a scientist at the Douglas Research Centre and a professor of psychiatry at McGill University, says her research shows that degradation of spatial memory is correlated to the frequency of GPS use. According to her, the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain involved in spatial memory, is also involved in other types of memory, learning and emotional behavior. That means people who have better spatial memory have better cognition and less risk of Alzheimer’s disease. She says humans have their own built-in GPS-like capabilities, and using it is good for our brain health. While it may seem impractical to swear off using a GPS on your next road trip, Bohbot suggests turning it off and trying to find your own way home after reaching your destination, or looking at the route before leaving to determine if you’re comfortable trying to find your own way.
(Bad for my brain or not, my GPS saves my life, regularly!)
(Now, hypothetically, how would using a GPS affect someone who has absolutely no apparent spatial memory to begin with? Asking for a spouse…)

NAME DROPPING:
If your name is Lorraine, Bill, Suzanne or Stuart, I’ve got some bad news for you. You could be among the last of a dying breed. Baby experts Bella Baby used data from Google Trends and Baby Name UK to determine what baby names are on the outs among new parents so far this year. And while it’s common for names to go out of fashion (we can blame a certain digital assistant as the reason not many are calling their new bundle of joy ‘Alexa’ these days…), Bella Baby says the new results don’t mean we won’t some day see a resurgence of Angelas, Nicoles, Garys, or Chads in the future. Here are the most unpopular baby names in the UK so far this year…
BOYS:                                    GIRLS:
• Kobe                                    • Angela
• Jeffrey                                 • Kimberly
• Nigel                                    • Nicole
• Ashton                                 • Ashley
• Graham                               • Sophia
• Stuart                                  • Lorraine
• Chad                                    • Kristen
• Gary                                     • Suzanne
• Bill
(Yet, for some reason, more than a few people are out there saying: “I think we should name our child Thanos”!)
(If you want to know how to find the perfect name for your baby, just do this: Find out what a movie star called her baby – and name yours the opposite!)

HOME WITH A VIEW:
If your neighbor has a home security system, you might want to close the blinds — fast! According to a poll, many people aren’t just using their surveillance cameras to keep the house safe – they also use it to spy on the neighbors. In a survey of more than 1,000 Americans who have home security cameras, one in 4 people admit to using their cameras to peek at what their neighbors are up to. And one in 7 confessed that, at some point, their system has caught a neighbor walking around naked. And it turns out Gen X homeowners are most likely to use their cameras to spy on others. Younger respondents actually use their cameras for the exact opposite purpose. Three in 10 Gen Z respondents said they use their security system mainly to avoid people who knock on their door.
(We use ours to spy on our own kids!)
(You know you live in a boring neighborhood when you’ve had a doorbell cam for 5 years – and it still hasn’t come up with one viral video!)

DID YOU KNOW?
It pays to tweet. A new study says executives who self-promote regularly on Twitter are more likely to receive job offers with high salaries than those who don’t promote their brand online. The research, carried out by McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin — determined that executives who promote their expertise and qualifications on Twitter are 32% more likely to attract higher-paying job offers after interviews. The flipside? Poorly-written tweets can backfire on executive candidates if hiring managers don’t like what they see.
