BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ John Mulaney confirmed that he married Olivia Munn during his appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” Monday. The 41-year-old “Big Mouth” star opened up for the first time about his private July wedding ceremony to longtime love, saying: “I got married. Thanks a lot. It’s the best.” Mulaney, who shares 2-year-old son Malcolm with Munn, proudly brought his mother-in-law, Kimberly Schmid, whom he calls “Miss Kim,” to the taping, and said to Meyers: “I’ve been in a lot of interesting situations. Marrying into a large Vietnamese family is one of the most fun things I’ve ever done.” People reported last month that the comedian and the “X-Men: Apocalypse” actress tied the knot at a friend’s house in New York.

★ Jimmy Kimmel says he’s not sure if there will be any TV late-night shows left in 10 years. The comedian, who spent much of 2022 pondering whether he would continue hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live” before signing a new, 3-year deal, revealed that one of the reasons he re-upped is that he was “worried” about what to do next. On his podcast, Kimmel said by the year 2034, “Maybe there’ll be one (late night show), but there won’t be a lot of them.” Why? There is so much content these days, and “now people can watch anything at anytime”. Kimmel said that while “It used to be Johnny Carson was the only thing on at 11:30pm and so everybody watched.” He also pointed out that people can easily catch late night hosts’ monologues the next day, so there is no “need to watch it when it’s on the air”.

★ The Toronto Film Festival has unveiled speakers for its 2024 edition next month, including discussions with Cate Blanchett, Zoe Saldaña and Steven Soderbergh. Blanchett will be in Toronto along with 2 of her latest projects: the TV series “Disclaimer”and the film “Rumours”, which debuted at Cannes. Blanchett will also be honored at TIFF with a Tribute Award, while also participating in the In Conversation With… event. Saldaña will be there to hype her star turn in “Emilia Pérez”, while Soderbergh will present “Presence”, his ghost tale starring Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan.

★ Super Bowl TV ad time is almost sold out, even though the big game is almost 6 months away. Fox TV, which is slated to broadcast Super Bowl LIX from Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, has sold out all but a handful of slots of commercial inventory, according to media buyers familiar with recent negotiations. They also say that Fox is using the heavy demand for the event to seek more than $7 million for a single 30-second commercial, and insists that anyone who wants to buy spots must now commit to an advertising package that includes time on other Fox properties to seal the deal.

★ After 25 years, Jason Biggs took advantage of his most memorable role for some tongue-in-cheek marketing. The “American Pie” star, who hosts Netflix‘s “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship”, joked “there were no pies harmed” while filming the baking competition series, which is “safe for family viewing”. He said to USA today: “I’ve really wanted to host something in the food world. Of course, there’s the wink at the camera and the audience with me as a baking show host. And whenever I can’t think of something to say, I always have a pie joke in my back pocket that brings the house down.” His 1999 breakout role in American Pie has long been known for the infamous scene detailing Biggs’ bumbling teen character’s high-jinks with an apple pie.

BS MUSIC NOTES:

• Taylor Swift – “The Tortured Poets Department” is spending its 14th week at #1 on Billboard’s album chart, keeping Ye’s new collab with Ty Dolla $ign, “Vultures 2” from a chart-topping debut. Swift and Kanye have a long-running and well-documented public feud. Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time” is the last album to spend 14 weeks at #1, ultimately spending 19 non-consecutive weeks at the top.
• Sabrina Carpenter — has been announced as a performer at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which has been moved to Sept. 11. The ceremony will air from UBS Arena in Queens NY. Also among the first round of announced performers are: Chappell Roan, Camila Cabello, Rauw Alejandro and GloRilla. Carpenter is nominated for 6 Moon Persons this year.
• Nine Inch Nails — will provide the music score for the upcoming “Tron: Ares” movie, set for release next year. Disney made the reveal in a spectacular laser announcement at the D23 Expo fan event in Anaheim CA. NIN frontman Trent Reznor bandmate Atticus Ross have scored a number of films together, including “The Social Network” and “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3kshb8ps
• Metallica — has shared 360-degree-camera video of their performance of ‘Fuel’ during the band’s August 2 show in Foxborough MA. During their current tour, 4 drum sets are spaced around the circular stage so drummer Lars Ulrich can get closer to the audience. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/697nk2kn
• Eagles — Joe Walsh has announced the lineup for the 2024 edition of his benefit concert VetsAid, Nov. 11 at UBS Arena in Queens NY. In addition to Walsh, the show will feature Toto, Eric Church and Kool and The Gang. Tickets go on sale Friday. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yehwhyfm
• Bailey Zimmerman – His fashion faux pas at his show in Vegas resulted in him singing shirtless. He opened his show wearing a Las Vegas Raiders shirt. But even though it was in the very stadium that the team calls home, the crowd booed him to the point that he stopped performing and asked: “You guys want me to take it off or what?” Based on the crowd reaction, after a few seconds, he complied. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bdu348zf
• Morgan Wallen – His day in court has been pushed back 4 months. He’d previously been scheduled to appear before a judge tomorrow, after being arrested April 7 for allegedly throwing a chair off the roof of Chief’s in downtown Nashville. A settlement between the parties is still possible.
• Luke Bryan – has seemingly finally found a buyer for his $13 million mansion in Santa Rosa Beach FL, after slashing the price times. The real estate broker said that the sale on the 4,645-square-foot property is “pending” after first hitting the real estate market in 2022 for $18 million.

SHOOTING THE BULL

MENTAL CHALLENGES:
This might not come as a surprise to you if you’ve ever endured an all-night study session, or a marathon meeting at work, but now science agrees: Thinking hard hurts. Radboud University researchers found that mental effort can be conclusively linked to unpleasant feelings, which they say may challenge some peoples’ assumptions about the joys of intellectual pursuits. Their study, an analysis of 170 separate research projects, found that no matter what the mental task is, from healthcare workers developing new technologies to athletes honing their golf swings, the result was always the same: the harder people had to think, the more unpleasant they found the experience. So why do we do it? The scientists concluded that perhaps “people choose mentally effortful activities despite the effort, not because of it.”
(Sounds to me like they couldn’t come up with a decent conclusion, so instead of really thinking about it, they just scribbled that down and took off for the weekend!)
(Actually, I find it hurts to think even just a little bit. What? Just me?)

DOG’S LIFE:
❑ Dolce & Gabbana has introduced a new fragrance mist – for dogs. The luxury brand says its new “alcohol-free scented mist” was inspired by founder Domenico Dolce’s “unconditional love” for his loyal dog.  ‘Fefé’ “blends fresh and delicate notes of Ylang Ylang, Musk, and Sandalwood”, resulting in a “tender and embracing fragrance crafted for a playful beauty routine.” Suckers — I mean, dog owners, rather, can preorder the Fefé fragrance mist for just over US$100. If that sounds like a lot, keep in mind that it comes in “a sleek green lacquered glass bottle, adorned with a vibrant red metal cap and a precious 24-carat gold-plated paw”, which we’re sure your mutt will appreciate deeply, especially if, like mine, it would rather swim in a muddy stream or roll on poo than smell even a little bit nice… (Although, on the other hand, it would give dogs a good excuse to sniff other dogs’ body parts!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/zk5a7a3h
❑ The key to unlocking your best self might not be hidden in a gym membership or a self-help book, but instead could be that adorable, panting 4-legged furball who begs for scraps at the dinner table. A poll of 2,000 dog owners found that 39% credit their dog with improving their emotional health, while over 25% report enhancements in their mental and physical health. How is it that our canine miracle workers provide these benefits? Dog owners said the secret lies in their uncanny ability to comfort us when we’re down (69%), stand by us through stressful times (60%), and even lend an ear when we need to vent (45%). 81% reported increased activity levels as a result of being a puppy parent, and 49% admitted that their furry friend is often the sole reason they get any exercise at all. (If you aren’t realizing mental health benefits from owning a dog, you’re doing it wrong!)

THIS IS A RECORD-ING:
A man who has been described as a “serial record-breaker” proved that to be an accurate description, by breaking 15 world records in a single day. David Rush, who is on a quest to hold the most concurrent world records, started his record-breaking marathon by taking 198 bites out of 3 apples while juggling the fruits for one minute. Next, he chalked up the fastest time to bounce a table tennis ball on 2 bottle caps 10 times using alternate hands, managing to do it in 2.09 seconds. Other records he set that day last week, all during a visit to the Guinness World Record headquarters in London, involved similarly-odd feats involving the most table tennis balls bounced against a wall with the mouth in 30 seconds (47), the most hits of a table tennis ball against a wall in one minute (398), and (wow!) the most table tennis balls bounced and caught in shaving foam on the head in 30 seconds (16). He also set records using a baseball, a basketball, a bowling ball, a paper airplane, chopsticks, t-shirts, toilet paper and lime juice (separately, not together). Rush is now in the process of confirming whether he has overtaken the current world record of holding 180 Guinness World Records at the same time. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3ybu7pev
(Which would, of course, count as yet another record…)
(I can’t help but think that some of these records should be awarded their OWN records – for obscurity!)

DID YOU KNOW?
It seems that the blue light emanating from our electronic devices can have a negative effect on more than just our eyes and our sleep. Evidence is still emerging, but some dermatologists are warning that blue light can be bad for our skin, too. Blue light might damage collagen, a protein essential for skin structure, potentially accelerating the formation of wrinkles. Studies also suggest exposure to blue light can stimulate production of melanin, the natural pigment that gives skin its color. Too much blue light, then, could worsen hyperpigmentation – leading to dark spots on the skin – especially in those with darker skin. And because we already know that the light from our devices can have a negative effect on sleep, it stands to reason that there are also the visible signs of sleep deprivation to deal with, such as the skin around the eyes becoming dull or puffy. (But for another hour of that awesome and intelligent discourse on X at 2am…it’s worth it, right?)

BS CHRONOMETER 08.14.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “V-J Day”, also known as Victory Over Japan Day”, marking the 1945 anniversary of Japan’s unconditional surrender to the allies, ending WW II (also celebrated on August 15, depending on time zone, and on Sept. 2 in the US)
• “Navajo Code Talkers Day”. ‘Code talkers’, as they became known, used English code words that they translated into their language to send messages during World War II. The Japanese military could hear them, but couldn’t understand them because the Navajo language was not well known. They saved many lives and helped the allies win the war.
• “Creamsicle Day”, celebrating those ooey-gooey, orange or raspberry-flavored Popsicles with ice cream inside, an invention of Swede Alexander Frehse in 1923.
• “Financial Awareness Day”, a day to add up all your assets and all your debts in order to get a clear picture of where you stand. (…just before declaring bankruptcy!)
• “Tattoo Removal Day”, which came about in response to “Tattoo Day” (July 17). With thousands of people inking themselves up, also came an annual uptick of regret. (What’s the most regrettable tattoo that you’ve ever seen?)
• “International Nagging Day”. If you have issues with someone, this is a good day to get them out of your system … over and over-and-over again.
• “Wiffle Ball Day”, the famous 8-holed plastic ball commonly used in the game was invented by David Mullany in 1953 when he designed a ball that curved easily for his 12-year-old son. It was named when his son and his friends would refer to a strikeout as a “whiff”.
• “World Lizard Day”, celebrating this specific type of reptile. The day also encourages us to show appreciation for lizards, and to learn more about them. Some Fun Facts about lizards:
– They are found on every continent except Antarctica.
– Most kinds of lizards absorb water from their food, so they have no need to be near water.
– Lizards are cold-blooded, which means they need sunshine in order to survive.
– A lizard has a tail that regenerates, which means it grows another one if it breaks off.
