BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

Veteran R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire and animated character ‘Cleveland Brown’ from “The Cleveland Show” (FOX) have teamed up to create the seasonal song “Get Your Hump On This Christmas”, both song & video available on iTunes beginning today (another Christmas standard, no doubt) . . . George Clooney’s new comedy film “Up In the Air” may be a sleeper hit; it’s taken in more than a million in box office despite playing in just 15 theaters (gradually opens wide over the next few weeks) . . . Keith Arem, the ‘talent director’ of videogame “Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”, has just landed his first live-action feature film, “Frost Road”, about the survivors and victims of an invisible contagion in a small town (a new way to short-cut the journey from videogame to movie) . . . NYC’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex, which opened in December 2008, is closing for good on January 3rd and the exhibits will be packed up to tour the globe (the main R&R Hall in Cleveland is unaffected) . . . And officials with the Ray Festa Melanoma Foundation are asking jobless famous person Rosie O’Donnell to retract her ‘irresponsible’ recent remark that exposure to the Sun isn’t dangerous, further claiming she ‘lives to tan’ (next time she guests on “Nip/Tuck” she’ll need a ‘skinotomy’).

THE DAYLIGHT DIET:

Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla CA say they’ve determined that when we eat might be just as vital to our health as what we eat. Studies of mice reveal the daily waxing and waning of genes in the liver is mostly controlled by food intake and not by the body’s circadian clock, as previously believed. Lead researcher Satchidananda Panda was so impressed by the discovery he’s stopped eating between 8 pm and 8 am. He says he feels great and has actually lost weight even though he eats whatever he wants during the day.

INTERNATIONAL COLD & FLU REMEDIES:
A sampling of treatments you may never have tried …
• China – For fever and chills Chinese doctors often use formulas containing cinnamon twig, ginger root, asarum (similar to ginger), kudzu root, and licorice.
• Colombia – Clear a stuffy nose by taking regular whiffs of a sachet containing a pungent mix of crushed garlic, broken bay leaves, and coarsely ground nutmeg.
• Japan – Grate lots of ginger, add lemon and honey and douse it with hot water, then drink it to clear up a stuffed nose.
• Scotland – Hot rum with peppermint is a seafarer’s cure for colds. Other Scottish cures include drinking nettle tea and going for a walk to get sea air.
• Serbia – Slowly melt 3 tablespoons of sugar until caramel-colored, then add a cup of milk; keep on low heat, stirring continuously until it becomes a smooth drink.
• South Africa – Grind fresh garlic and add it to soups to create a cold tonic. Try inhaling a mixture of turmeric and boiled water to clear up nasal congestion.

EXERCISE DISCRETION:
According to a new Louisiana State University study, not everyone seems to benefit from strenuous exercise – even if they try really hard. An experiment involving over 700 volunteers who each took a strict 20-week endurance training program found some surprising results – the most ‘trainable’ improved their cardio-respiratory endurance by 40%, while the least trainable  showed little or no improvement at all. (Thanks LSU! Another excuse to flake out on the couch.)

LIFE BY THE NUMBERS:

• 50% of us will not eat mushrooms, no matter what.
• 35% of us cannot skip rope.
• 33% of men do not wipe down equipment at the gym after using it.

• 6% of us admit we have read a book while driving.

EAT THIS & LOOK YOUNGER:
Dr Nicholas Perricone claims that eating certain types of foods will actually make you look 10 years younger in just 30 days. Among his recommendations …
• Allium Family of Foods: Garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, chives, and shallots help the liver eliminate toxins & carcinogens.
• Barley: High in fiber, barley helps metabolize fats, cholesterol, and carbohydrates.
• Green Foods: These include wheat and barley grasses that you can purchase in powder, tablet, or juice form. They help lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.
• Buckwheat: It’s loaded with protein, high in amino acid, stabilizes blood sugar and reduces hypertension.
• Beans & Lentils: They’re loaded with antioxidants, folic acid, and potassium.
• Peppers: Bell peppers and chili peppers have twice the vitamin C as citrus fruit and burn fat.
• Nuts & Seeds: They’re packed with omega-3 fats, which are great for your heart.
• Sprouts: High in protein and vitamin C, sprouts are a tasty addition to many dishes.
• Yogurt & Kefir: Both of these cultured foods contain healthful bacteria that aid immune function. In addition, the calcium helps burn fat.
