SHOOTING THE BULL

TIPPING POINT:
How do you feel when you are electronically asked to give a tip – and you feel like you’re being watched? According to a new report, the simple act of leaving a tip has changed from a private moment to what many think of as “guilt tipping” – and that is influencing how much we tip, and our likelihood of returning to a business. The study, published in the Journal of Business Research, found that the rising use of digital point-of-sale systems (tablet screens that swivel to face customers), while convenient, can contribute to “tipflation” – the feeling that tipping expectations have gotten out of hand. Customers who used the more private countertop system were found to be significantly more likely to return to the business. On the other hand, those who felt they were being observed while using the handheld system tipped more. The researchers concluded that this presents an interesting question for business owners: While they might generate higher tips for their employees through less private payment systems, they risk damaging customer loyalty and word-of-mouth recommendations in the process.
(They damaged MY loyalty when they started making 20% the lowest default tip option!)
(Me? I’m not near as worried about them seeing how much I tip as I’m worried that my card is going to be declined!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A South Korean man has been sentenced to a suspended prison term for deliberately gaining more than 20kg (44 lbs.) to get out of a tougher role in the country’s military conscription system. In South Korea, all able-bodied men must serve in the military for 18-21 months, but those with health issues can carry out their duties at non-military facilities like welfare centers and community service centers. Evidence showed the 26-year-old deliberately gained weight by doubling his daily food intake and drinking a large amount of water just before his physical examination. (In his defense, he pleaded: “Sunday brunch”!)
➢ A British man was awarded US $2.53 in compensation from Mars Wrigley UK after he unwrapped a Mars bar (similar to a Milky Way in the US) — and found it was missing its signature ripple on top. Harry Seager posted a photo of his unusually smooth candy bar to the Dull Men’s Club group on Facebook, and the post quickly went viral, garnering hundreds of shares and thousands of comments. According to him, “It tasted the same, it just was a lot thinner on top.” Seager reached out to the company the next day. He said he wasn’t seeking compensation, but he was curious about what had caused the Mars bar’s smoothness, and wanted to inform the company in case there was a production problem that hadn’t been caught. Mars Wrigley did not offer an explanation, but did award him a £2 voucher. Harry’s reaction: “I think £2 is great, it will be 2 free Mars bars.” (The company didn’t mention the fact that they recently fired an employee with a “serial licking” problem!) WIKI IT:
Wikipedia has revealed its list of the 50 most-popular pages on the site for 2024. As you might imagine, the US election, celebrities, and pop culture dominated the list. Here are the Top 5, ranked by page views:
1. (Famous) Deaths in 2024 [44.4 million pageviews]
2. Kamala Harris [29 million] (Can she take solace in the fact that she at least beat Trump on Wiki?)
3. 2024 United States presidential election [27.9 million]
4. Lyle and Erik Menendez [26.1 million]
5. Donald Trump [25.3 million]
FYI, the yearly “famous deaths” page has never fallen below 3rd place since the list began in 2015. ChatGPT, which was #1 in 2023, fell to #12 this year. The top movie page was “Deadpool & Wolverine”, at #8.

DID YOU KNOW?
(***Caution – preview for content***) A pair of scientists, one of them at Yale, have conducted a research project on what it takes to be considered “badass”. Over 2,000 people completed questionnaires on the topic, and it was determined that a badass either has an “outer toughness,” an “inner toughness,” or both. Outer toughness consists of “physical strength”, a “formidable presence” or both, while “inner toughness” can include adjectives such as “not afraid,” “tough,” “true,” “good,” “confident,” “brave,” “willing,” “independent,” “positive” and “able.” The dictionary definition of a badass has a negative connotation, but also good, leading to the researchers’ theory that badassery is a “deeply puzzling concept.” (But we know this for sure: If you’re conducting a study on how to be badass, you’re most definitely NOT!)

BS CHRONOMETER 12.06.24
BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women” (in Canada), also known as “White Ribbon Day”, observed since 1991 to mark the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, when a student murdered 14 women and injured 14 others in the name of “fighting feminism”. Today, Canadians are encouraged to observe a minute of silence and to wear a white ribbon as a commitment to end violence against women. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mrx2kved
• “Bartender Appreciation Day”, created by Sailor Jerry Rum to recognize the efforts of bartenders and to honor them for the great service they provide. (It’s just a shame that there are no jokes about them…)
• “Gazpacho Day”, in celebration of the spicy but cold Spanish soup. To look like a real rube, order some in a restaurant, then blow on it to cool it down.
• “International Sweater Vestival”, the “annual celebration of solidarity, superiority, and sartorial splendor that is expressed through the collective wearing of sweater vests.” (A normal day for [***co-host***])
• “St Nicholas Day”, commemorating the 4th-century bishop who died December 6, 342 AD, and from whom the traditions of “Santa Claus” and exchanging gifts were derived. No wonder he’s the patron saint of both children and merchants! Many European kids awaken today to find candy and oranges in their shoes, or if they’ve been bad … a piece of coal.
• “Pawnbrokers Day”, celebrated on “St. Nicholas Day”, the saint who, among other things, is the patron saint of pawnbrokers. (Buuut…shouldn’t St. Nicholas Day be Dec. 25?)
• “Miners Day”, saluting the ‘men of the deeps’ who toil underground. (You know what they say: “A lot of people worry about being buried alive, but really it’s a miner problem…”)
• “Put on Your Own Shoes Day”. This is it, boys and girls. Time to prove you’re a big kid now. (Tomorrow, we work on putting on MATCHING shoes…)
• “Microwave Oven Day”. Percy Spencer discovered microwave cooking in 1945 when he came too close to a magnetron tube — and a chocolate bar in his pocket began to melt. (Fun Fact: The first commercially available microwave oven, in 1947, was called the ‘Radarange’)
SATURDAY:
• “Cotton Candy Day”, celebrating the sweet, sugary taste-treat that melts in your mouth. It was invented in 1897 as ‘Fairy Floss’, then renamed in 1920. In Greece, Israel, and India, it is often referred to as ‘Old Woman’s Hair’. Yuck.
• “International Civil Aviation Day”, an observance by the International Civil Aviation Organization since 1994, to reinforce the importance of civil aviation to social and economic development. (Will this idea ever “take off”?)
• “Letter Writing Day”, when we’re encouraged to take a few minutes to send someone a handwritten letter. Letter-writing has almost become a lost art. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone, either printed or in cursive? (What other old-school skills are falling by the wayside?)
• “Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day”, observed on the anniversary of one of the defining moments in American history, the 1941 Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which caused the US to enter WW2. It is also known as the “date which will live in infamy”. BS FAST FACT: The 2001 film “Pearl Harbor” cost as much to make as the actual rebuilding of Pearl Harbor, and lasted an hour longer than the attack.
• “Coats and Toys for Kids Day”, all about people coming together to create positive change. Today, people donate cold-weather gear like coats, boots, gloves, and toys, to families who need them.
• “Earmuff Day”, also known as “Chester Greenwood Day”, honoring the Farmington, Maine man who was just 15 when he designed the first pair, made from wire, beaver fur, and cloth. At 19, he acquired a patent, and by age 28, his company was shipping them worldwide.
• “Slime Day”, celebrating the slimy, slippery, and squishy goo that has been engaging kids (and adults) since the 1970s. Slime is neither a solid or liquid. It’s both. Scientifically, it is considered a non-Newtonian fluid, meaning the polymers change depending on pressure. (A highlight of the “Kids Choice Awards”, too!)
• “Crate Day” in New Zealand, when it is the custom to share a crate (12-pack) of beer to celebrate the approach of summer. This can be done in the privacy of homes, at parks, or on the beach. Drinking contests are also common. The celebration has its own set of commandments such as: “Thou shall begin at midday” and “Thou shall wear the costume of Crate Day: singlets, stubbies, and sandals.” (But the way it was explained to me is you start on a crate it in the morning, ad must finish it by the end of the day…)
SUNDAY:
• “Christmas Tree Day”, a good day to put yours up. Some go out and cut down a real tree, tie it to the roof of their car, and bring it home. Others drag a box out of the attic or basement, fluff up the branches of an artificial tree, and stick them into a post. (But at least there’s a much-lower chance of vermin escaping into your home that way…)
• “Brownie Day”, celebrating the chewy chocolate in a pan that you just can’t quit eating. (I always intend to add whipped cream, but it never lasts long enough…)
• “Worldwide Candle Lighting Day”. Celebrated since 1997, today, we’re encouraged to light candles at 7pm local time, to honor children worldwide who have died at any age from any cause.
• “World Choral Day”, celebrated on the 2nd Sunday in December, when thousands of choirs join in the celebration at concerts, festivals, sing-alongs, and other events.
• “Pretend to Be a Time Traveler Day”, created in 2007 by the Koala Wallop online community. The basic premise is to pretend to be someone from the past or future who’s somehow ended up in the present. (No comments about my wardrobe, please…)
• “Take It in the Ear Day”, a day to learn how to accept criticism graciously. (What did ya THINK it was about?)
• “National Lard Day”. While traditionally viewed as unhealthy, lard can be used to incorporate healthy fats into a nutritional diet. This day showcases how it can be used and how it is considered a better fat option than butter or grease. If you love lard (and don’t have anything better to do), share its benefits on social media, using #nationallardday.
