BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Former “Community” co-stars Ken Jeong and Joel McHale will reteam to ring in the new year as hosts of Fox’s “New Year’s Eve Toast & Roast 2021”, a live, 3½ hour year-end special. They’ll commemorate the past year, for better or worse, by toasting the better and roasting the worst. Fox says the special will celebrate “those that helped to make the world a better place this past year.” Additional guest appearances and musical performances will be announced.

★ The Oxford home of late fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien is up for sale, and some of the stars from the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies are calling on fans to help a charity organization purchase the property to create a literary center dedicated to Tolkien. The goal is to raise $6 million, but only $5.3 million is needed to buy the house. If $6.1 million is raised, the campaign will fund renovations and restore the garden. If they hit the $6.2 million mark, they can fund a scholarship for those from low-income backgrounds to attend creative courses and special events at the house.

★ In light of Elliot Page’s public announcement that he is trans, Netflix is acting quickly to make sure that his television and film credits on the streaming platform accurately reflect his identity. And as for his role in the popular superhero action series “The Umbrella Academy”, there’s no need to worry about Page’s future on the show — he and his character ‘Vanya Hargreeves’ aren’t going anywhere — Netflix reportedly has no intention of recasting Page’s role.

★ People magazine has named George Clooney, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Selena Gomez and Regina King its “2020 People of the Year.” The four are being celebrated for their positive impact in the world during a challenging 2020. Clooney, Fauci, Gomez and King will be separately featured on different magazine covers of the issue, which is out today.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Drake – Has a line of scented candles coming. They are named Carby Musk, Good Thoughts, Sweeter Tings, Muskoka, and Williamsburg Sleepover. It’s Carby Musk which will likely draw the most attention because it’s inspired by the rapper’s very own scent. An official release date is yet to be announced.
• Demi Lovato – has had her nose re-pierced. She was seen with a jeweled stud in the left side of nose in the early days of her career, but hasn’t publicly worn it for years. This time, it is on the right side.
• Taylor Swift — has revealed a snippet of one of her re-recordings of her old material. A comical commercial for the dating site Match features a redo of her 2008 hit ‘Love Story’. She wrote on Twitter that her friend Ryan Reynolds asked if he could use a snippet “for a LOLsome commercial he wrote”.
• Cher – helped rescue “the world’s loneliest elephant”. During the pandemic, she traveled to Pakistan to oversee the transfer of Kaavan, a 36-year-old male who’s resided alone in poor conditions at a local zoo, to the much more pleasant Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary, where there are more than 600 elephants to keep him company.
• Black Sabbath – will release an expanded reissue of their 1972 album “Vol. 4” on Feb. 12. “Vol 4: Super Deluxe Edition” will include a remastered version of the original album along with 20 previously unreleased studio and live recordings, available as a 4-CD or 5-LP vinyl set.
• Metallica – is once again collaborating with the makers of “Monopoly”, to bring you a new “World Tour” edition of the classic board game. This time they’re giving players the chance to visit all 7 continents, as the band did on their 2013 tour. Player tokens include: Lady Justice, Death Magnetic coffin, Ride the Lightning electric chair, Master of Puppets Cross, Metal Up Your A** toilet, and the Scary Guy.
• Sammy Hagar – Was not insulted when David Lee Roth made him the subject of his latest work of art. Hagar posted that he’s interested in buying his Van Halen predecessor’s new cartoon. The drawing, called “The Daily Catastrophe”, features references to Hagar’s “Red Rocker” nickname and his 1984 hit ‘I Can’t Drive 55’, but doesn’t give the impression of being complimentary.
• Ingrid Andress & Gabby Barrett – have been named to Forbes’ annual “30 Under 30” music list. That’s the financial publication’s shout-out to singers, songwriters, managers and entrepreneurs who are revolutionizing the biz—all under the age of 30.
• Riley Green & Tenille Townes – will reveal the 2020 ACM Industry Award and Studio Recording Award winners via Facebook on Dec. 8. The winners are usually announced at the ACM Honors ceremony, which was cancelled this summer due to the pandemic. This year’s online ceremony will recognize the special honorees and off-camera category winners from the 55th ACM Awards.
• Justin Townes Earle – The singer/songwriter son of Steve Earle died of an accidental overdose, according to an investigation by the Tennessee Department of Health. A statement posted to Justin’s Facebook page reads: “the autopsy report revealed traces of fentanyl indicating that that usage of fentanyl-laced cocaine resulted in an overdose.” He died in August at 38.
SPITTING IMAGE:
Here’s a bit of pre-emptive help in case you’re planning some Saturday night shenanigans: Scientists say they’ve created artificial saliva to relieve ‘cottonmouth’, like the kind you may experience on Sunday morning. A new hydrogel developed at the University of Leeds was actually created to assist those who suffer from chronic dry mouth. The problem is that many of these people are elderly, and most existing artificial saliva replacements contain additional lipids (fats and oils), which many elderly patients shouldn’t have. Besides helping those patients, and you with your hangover, this new hydrogel may also have potential within the world of food. It may replicate the lubricating properties of fat, helping to create healthier, lower-calorie foods without reducing taste and texture.
(It’s expected to be expensive, but it’s a small price to pay for salivation!)
(So I can tell my pre-teen that he can throw out that jar of spit he’s been filling for 4 years?)
(Well, spit it out! Where can I get it?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Buying a brand-new car turned from a dream into a nightmare for an Indian motorist. A viral video shows an employee of the dealership giving the buyer of a Kia Carnival minivan some last-minute pointers. Things don’t exactly go according to plan though, and the man drives off, then slams straight into a concrete wall with enough force to deploy the airbags. (He’s blaming it on bad CARma…)
➢ (***Preview for content***) A university student says he was shocked to receive a bizarre ‘exit survey’ from a former lover following a short dating stint. Niall Moran of Cornwall UK took to social media to share the survey, which asked him to ‘rate his experience’. The 22-year-old posted screenshots from the quiz, which demanded a mixture of ratings and written responses. It starts with: “Thanks for the shag, now rate the experience. Thank you.” The first question asks: “How attractive did you find (NAME)?” At the bottom of the scale is the answer: “Ew what was I thinking,” and at the top – equivalent to a 10 – is: “Wow wow wow.” Subsequent questions include: “What is (NAME)’s best feature (it’s okay to objectify me here by the way),” and “How would you rate the sex?” The final question asks: “By the way, what’s your name (don’t leave if you don’t want to)”. (Sounds like he may want to wait until after his check-up before responding…)

DID YOU KNOW?
Your nose could be the key to getting fit. New research in mice suggests there is a link between doing voluntary exercise and the expression of genes that relate to scent perception. A University of California study found that mice that were bred to become high-level runners also had a unique, high-functioning sense of smell. The scientists say that someday they may be able to isolate chemicals developed in the olfactory system of mice and use them like air fresheners in gyms to make people even more motivated to exercise. (If my nose is the key to getting fit, why does the smell of my gym bag make me gag?)

• “Wear Brown Shoes Day”, for some unknown reason. To get the full effect, make sure you wear ’em with something black. (To get half-effect, wear ONE brown shoe)
• “World Wildlife Conservation Day”, with the aim of raising awareness and engaging conservationists to put an end to wildlife crime. Some species are still being slaughtered by criminal networks driven by a voracious demand for illegal animal parts and products.

• “Miners Day”, saluting the ‘men of the deeps’ who toil away daily underground. (You know what they say: “A lot of people worry about being buried alive, but really it’s a miner problem…”)
• “Put on Your Own Shoes Day”, This is it, boys and girls. Time to prove you’re a big kid now. (Tomorrow, we work on putting on MATCHING shoes…)
• “Pawnbrokers Day”, celebrated on “St. Nicholas Day”, the saint who, among other things, is the patron saint of pawnbrokers. (Buuut…shouldn’t St. Nicholas Day be Dec. 25?)
• “St Nicholas Day”, commemorating the 4th-century bishop who died December 6, 342 AD and from whom the traditions of “Santa Claus” and exchanging gifts were derived. No wonder he’s the patron saint of both children and merchants! Many European kids awaken today to find candy and oranges in their shoes, or if they’ve been bad … a piece of coal.
• “Microwave Oven Day”, Percy Spencer discovered microwave cooking in 1945 when he came too close to a magnetron tube and a chocolate bar in his pocket began to melt. (Fun Fact: The first commercially available microwave oven in 1947 was called the ‘Radarange’)
