★ It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… the first look at many of the new characters in James Gunn’s “Superman” movie, starring David Corenswet. The first trailer for the upcoming superhero blockbuster dropped yesterday, and the epic footage introduced many of Gunn’s rebooted versions of iconic DC characters, starting with an immediate fan favorite. It begins with ‘Superman’ crashing into the snow, bloody and battered from an unseen fight. He lets out a whistle — and ‘Krypto’, the super dog, rushes in to save the day. Nicholas Hoult’s ‘Lex Luthor’ also appears, as do ‘Green Lantern’, ‘Hawkgirl’ “Mister Terrific’, ‘Metamorpho’, and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan as Daily Planet reporter ‘Lois Lane’. ★ Danny Masterson’s legal team has filed an appeal to the disgraced actor’s 2023 rape conviction. The defense requested that convictions be overturned due to numerous biases and procedural and substantive errors that “violated” his rights to a fair trial, according to court documents. The “That 70s Show” actor was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison, the maximum allowed by law, and will be eligible for parole after serving more than 25 years. Masterson was found guilty on 2 counts of forcible rape, and a jury was hung on a third charge.

★ Hallmark is no longer just producing love, it’s making it happen. The first trailer is out for “Small Town Setup,” the brand’s first foray into the world of dating reality shows. The Hallmark+ original will be hosted by Ashley Williams, known for her role on “How I Met Your Mother”. Each episode follows a set of small-town parents with an adult child who is successful, but unlucky in love. In true Hallmark style, these adult children live in big cities. Parents help find 3 potential matches for their son or daughter in their hometown, and when their child returns for a visit, they go on dates with the suitors. Barbra Streisand wrote on Instagram: “I just saw a wonderful new singer named GRACIE ABRAMS on Saturday night live…and it turns out she’s the daughter of my friend JJ Abrams!” Gracie’s dad created the shows “Felicity”, “Alias” and “Lost” and directed “The Force Awakens” and “The Rise of Skywalker”.
• Mariah Carey — had a memorable moment during the final show of her “Christmas Time Tour” in New York on Tuesday. Surprise front-row guest Rihanna asked her to sign her breast. Quote: “It would be a tie between Miracle on 34th Street, which is still just great acting [and a] great movie…I watch it probably 4 times every Christmas and cry at the end every time. And I love Elf…one of the absolute great stories and just funniest movies I’ve ever seen.”

HEART FACTS ON SUGAR:
This is the news you’ve been waiting all week to hear: An occasional slice of cake – or, say, a handful of delicious Christmas shortbread cookies with icing – might actually be doing your health a favor. Swedish researchers have found that not all sugar is created equal – and your approach to sweet treats could be more important than having the willpower to “just say no”. The new study, published in Frontiers in Public Health, discovered that while sugary drinks are a heart health hazard, enjoying occasional treats could actually provide some cardiovascular benefits. The Lund University team tracked nearly 70,000 participants over more than 2 decades, and found that drinking more than 8 servings of sugary drinks per week was linked to higher risks of several cardiovascular conditions. The researchers suspect that “liquid sugars, found in sweetened beverages…make you feel less full — potentially leading to overconsumption.” They suggest that “moderation is key” when it comes to sugar consumption, in whichever form you consume it.
(8 sugary drinks per week is bad, huh? So…just for the record — Beer: Does that stuff have sugar?)

ODDEST GUINNESS RECORDS OF 2024:
❑ Smallest washing machine: Sebin Saji of India had his appliance officially measured at 1.28 inches by 1.3 inches (3.3cm) by 1.5 inches (3.8cm)– smaller than a Tamagotchi digital pet. (***Caution*** From recent online chatter, we understand that’s about the same size as Justin Timberlake’s “appliance”!)
❑ Largest building in the shape of a chicken: The Campuestohan Highland Resort in the Philippines unveiled its new rooster-shaped building, which stands at 114 feet, 7 inches tall (34.9m). (I’m not sure exactly how much competition there is out there for this one!)
❑ Longest paddling journey by pumpkin boat: Gary Kristensen of Oregon hollowed out a pumpkin he named ‘Punky Loafster’ and took a 45.7-mile (74km) journey down the Columbia River.
❑ Fastest 10 meters on a skateboard by a cat: Bao Zi, an American shorthair cat belonging to a Chinese man, shredded a skateboard 10 meters (32.8 feet) in 12.85 seconds.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Wyoming police are reminding people to decorate their homes for Christmas – and maybe not their cars — after a driver was pulled over whose vehicle was completely covered with colorful lights. The Wyoming Highway Patrol shared a photo on Instagram showing the festive Ford Mustang. The post said: “As the holiday season approaches, we would like to remind you of a Wyoming statute” which says that “no person shall drive or move any vehicle…with any lamp or device thereon capable of displaying a red or blue light visible…” The post said that while decorating a car “might look cool and be festive, we would to remind you that it is illegal. Please remember to stay safe when celebrating this season!” (They totally missed the fact that this person got drunk and drove through someone’s beautiful Christmas display!) ➢ A woman who celebrated her 106th birthday at her Ohio retirement home credits her long life to a positive attitude — and a love of Fireball whiskey. Florence Hackman, nicknamed “Fireball Flo” after her love of the liquor, received complimentary bottles and merchandise from the manufacturer for her 105th birthday. She turned 106 on Monday, and her retirement home said on Facebook that Fireball Flo still closely follows her fav sports team, the Cincinnati Bengals — and still attends daily happy hours with her friends. (I’m sure she’s not the only Bengals fan who needs a belt of whiskey every day!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Do you sometimes spend hours researching a new gadget, only to feel a tinge of doubt after you buy it? According to a new study, that’s make you a “Maximizer” There are 2 types of shoppers: “maximizers”, who research endlessly, and “Satisficers”, who simply look for something that is “good enough.” It was found that maximizers, despite their post-purchase doubts, tend to use their items more often and for longer than satisficers. This translates to potentially less waste and a smaller environmental footprint. I’m a “good enough” type. My wife? She’s a “Maximizer” – especially when it comes to her credit card balance!)

BS CHRONOMETER 12.20.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Ugly Christmas Sweater Day”, celebrating the seasonal fad that’s become so commercialized that thrift stores are charging top prices for them. Ugly Christmas sweaters started as a trend in the 1950s, when holiday-themed motifs on sweaters began appearing in ads, then known as “Jingle Bell Sweaters.”
• “Go Caroling Day”, a day to get together and sing out with friends, family, or a singing group. Nursing homes, hospitals and other places often welcome carolers if you call ahead. (One thing I learned from drinking is that if you ever go Christmas caroling, you should go with a group of people. And also, go in December!)
• “Underdog Day”, saluting the underdogs and the unsung heroes, the ‘Number Twos’ who contribute so much to the ‘Number Ones’ that we always hear about: Sherlock Holmes’ Dr Watson, Captain Kirk’s Mr. Spock, Batman’s Robin, Simon’s Garfunkel, etc.
• “Dot Your i’s Day”, don’t be a poor penmanship perpetrator. Stop the neglect and give i’s their dots. (I’m fine with dotting my i’s, but crossing my t’s? That’s where I draw the line…)
• “International Human Solidarity Day”, a UN observance since 2005 to remind us of the importance of solidarity, and the spirit of sharing in combatting poverty worldwide.
• “Sangria Day”. Put a little “olé” in your life with the traditional fruity wine punch named for the Spanish word ‘sangre’, which means ‘blood’.
• “Games Day”. When was the last time you sat down with friends or family for an evening of carefree fun? If you can’t remember, this is the perfect occasion. The best-selling board game of all-time? ‘Monopoly’, with over 250 million sold in 80 countries and 26 languages since 1935.
SATURDAY:
• “Winter Solstice”, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, as Winter officially arrives at 4:21am ET (***Also the “Summer Solstice” for our BS’ers in the Southern Hemisphere, when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south***) The winter solstice is celebrated in many ways …
– “Blue Christmas”, also called “Longest Night” in the Western Christian tradition, is a day in the Advent season marking the longest night of the year.
– “Flashlight Day”, a tongue-in-cheek commemoration of the year’s longest night.
– In the Wicca religion it’s “Yule”, marking the death of the Sun-God and his rebirth from the Earth Goddess. (The source of the ‘Yule log’)
– Iranians celebrate with “Yalda”, when fires and lights are lit and families stay up all night to help the Sun battle against darkness.
– The annual “Yukon International Storytellers Festival” features all-night music and stories in Whitehorse, Yukon. (Just 89 days until Spring!)
• “Short Girl Appreciation Day”, a salute to those of minimal stature on the shortest day of the year. (Because it’s better to have loved a short girl and lost – than to never have loved a tall!)
• “Humbug Day”, when 12 ‘humbugs’ are allowed to be uttered in order to vent the frustrations of preparing for the holidays.
• “Don’t Make Your Bed Day”, created after a petition to Congress by 5th grader Shannon Barba of New Mexico in 2014. Although Congress didn’t bite, she reasoned that she was sick of making her bed every day – so because December 21 is the shortest day of the year, and we spend the least amount of time out of bed today, why bother making it?
• “Crossword Puzzle Day”, celebrating the date in 1913 when the first ‘Crossword Puzzle’ was published in the “New York World”. Arthur Wynne devised what he called a “Word-Cross” for the Christmas edition, blissfully unaware he was starting a worldwide craze.
• “French Fried Shrimp Day”, celebrating the joys of battered prawns. Mmm! (I’ve just been offered a job as a shrimp chef, but I’m not sure if I’ll accept it. I’ll need to weigh the ‘frozen prawns’…)
• “Homeless Persons Remembrance Day”, observed since 1990 to bring attention to homelessness and to remember those who have paid the ultimate price for living on the street.
SUNDAY:
• “Abilities Day”, first celebrated in 1999 to honor disabled people and their care-givers. It is also a time to recognize that we all have abilities and disabilities of various kinds. Today, show your solidarity by wearing a white ribbon, or by placing them on Christmas trees and wreaths.
• “Date Nut Bread Day”, celebrating the rich loaf that is moist and delicious, and great toasted for breakfast. Sort of like Christmas cake, only half the weight.
• “Cookie Exchange Day”. Cookie exchanges/swaps/parties are loads of fun and pretty simple to put together. Whip up a batch or 2 of your favorite tried-and-true homemade cookies, or try that brand new recipe you’ve been eyeing, and share or trade with your friends, family, or co-workers (if they last that long…the cookies, not the friends, family, and co-workers…).
