★ PETA is facing another social media controversy in wake of a statement on late wildlife expert Steve Irwin’s birthday. The issue began when Google honored Irwin, who was best known for his reality show “The Crocodile Hunter”, on what would have been his 57th birthday, with Google Doodle artwork on their home page. PETA lashed out on Twitter, claiming that Irwin was “harassing” the sting ray that killed him and that Google’s promotion was “dangerous.” PETA has received widespread condemnation for their remarks about Irwin, but has not walked back or taken down their statements.

The British Columbia SPCA is calling on dog owners to sign an online pledge not to use shock collars. According to them, shock collars, also known as electronic collars or e-collars, cause both physical and psychological pain to dogs. Shock collars send electrical shocks to a dog’s neck. The owner can control the intensity and length of each shock. But Karen van Haaften, senior manager of behaviour and welfare at the B.C. SPCA says that “There is no level of a shock collar that is not uncomfortable for the dogs.” Her organization says side-effects of the use of shock collars include increased cortisol levels, higher rates of aggression, fear and anxiety. Several European countries have banned the use of shock collars, as has the province of Quebec.
(Maybe they should be restricted to use on politicians…)

PUSSIBLE OUTCOME:
If your child is struggling with acne, tell him or her that you have some good news. It turns out that zits might be good for their career prospects, if not for their social life. In a study published in the Journal of Human Capital, researchers say that having acne as an adolescent is closely related with higher grade point averages, a greater likelihood of graduating college, and for women, even an association with higher earnings. Why? Maybe for the exact reason you are guessing. Those with acne were less likely to be out socializing and more likely to spend their time studying. The study found that, basically, acne “is associated with reduced participation in sports clubs and increased participation in non-sports clubs, suggesting a possible shift from physical to intellectual pursuits.”
(I was the kid with the acne problem AND the failing grades. But I sure was good at video games!)
(So, what you’re saying is… kids with zits tends to stay home…and you can connect the dots from there…)

THINGS ABOUT OSCAR:
(What you probably never realized about the Academy Award . . .)
☞ Height: 13.5 inches. Weight: 8.5 pounds.
☞ It depicts a golden knight standing on a film reel, gripping a crusader’s sword.
☞ The reel has five spokes, one for each of the 5 original Academy branches: actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers.
☞ The name “Oscar” is likely from Academy librarian Margaret Herrick’s exclamation upon first seeing it that it reminded her of her uncle Oscar.
☞ It takes Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry in Walden, New York three months to make 50 solid bronze statuettes and plate them in 24-karat gold.
☞ 3,140 of them have been given out over the course of 90 years (before last night).

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a study from researchers at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia, men who have thick, rugged beards enjoy the benefits of being protected from 90-95% of harmful ultraviolet rays on their faces, helping reduce the risk of skin cancer. They determined that facial hair has a UPF of 2-21, depending on the thickness of the beard. Having a large beard also protects the face from irritants and can keep the face youthful by retaining moisture and blocking harsh wind.
(Beards are also known to retain snacks for later…)
