More From the Sheethouse!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

34-year-old actress Angelina Jolie has apparently mended the estranged relationship with her 71-year-old actor-father Jon Voight, the two of them spotted on a boat cruise alongside Brad Pitt & the Brangelina brood in Venice, Italy (Jolie is preparing to film “The Tourist” there opposite Johnny Depp) . . . Physicians & nutritionists are warning that the quick way contestants on “The Biggest Loser” (NBC) shed weight is unhealthy and could actually be dangerous (fat chance they’ll ever change the show) . . . Singer Billy Joel’s 24-year-old daughter Alexa Ray Joel is set to follow in the footsteps of her model mom, Christie Brinkley, after being named the new face of Prell shampoo, which mommy modeled for 24 years ago (something tells us somebody pulled some strings) . . . In a new Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment poll on the ‘Sexiest Female Stars’, most women pick Beyoncé while most men pick Megan Fox (guys don’t care about smarts) . . . 35-year-old actor Ryan Phillippe (ex-Mr Reese Witherspoon) is single again as 27-year-old Aussie actress Abbie Cornish (“A Good Year”) has ended their relationship for undisclosed reasons and moved out of their shared home (clue: his last name is pronounced ‘phil-and-der-er’) . . . The soundtrack “Glee: The Music, Vol 1” from hit TV show “Glee” (FOX) has jumped a phenomenal 67 positions to top the British album chart this week (Vol 2 has already been released as well) . . . And famous person Kim Kardashian (“Keeping Up With the Kardashians”) has felt it necessary to inform us that she ‘pretty much’ lasers her whole body so that she’s ‘like a little hairless Chihuahua’ (to which we respond in fitting language, woof!).

FACEBOOK FRIEND ETIQUETTE:

How do you tell someone you don’t want to ‘friend’ them on Facebook? In the workplace, the consequences of offending someone by ignoring their request can be a big deal. A few tips from the experts …
• Suggest to the colleague that you instead wish to connect on LinkedIn, the social network for professional relationships.
• Offer thanks for the invitation but inform them you’re restricting your Facebook to family and personal friends.
• Accept the invitation, then use Facebook’s privacy settings to limit the flow of info between you and your new ‘friend’.
– “Globe & Mail”

REAL-LIFE SPIDER-MAN:

Engineers at Cornell University in New York have invented a palm-sized device that uses the adhesive power of water to create a reversible adhesive bond capable of sticking to glass, wood, and even brick. It’s hoped the research, funded by the US military, can be used to develop gloves and shoes that allow the wearer to literally climb walls. The technology is inspired by the Palmetto tortoise beetle from Florida, which uses surface tension from tiny droplets of oil secreted by glands to adhere to leaves. (Voyeurism just got a lot scarier.)

FROM THE BS POLL VAULT:

A statistical breakdown of life by the numbers …
• 73% of those with ‘work’ e-mail accounts also use them for personal messages.
• 60% of us have attempted to flirt in traffic.
• 49% of us sleep with 2 pillows.
• 40% of us admit we’ve been so mad we’ve hurled footwear at someone.
• 30% of divorced women say the best thing about being single is having full control of the TV.
• 25% of women carry a calculator in their purse.

IT’S THE JOURNEY NOT THE DESTINATION:

Vacations are a chance to take a break from work, see the world and enjoy time with family, but do they make you happier? Researchers in the Netherlands have set out to measure the effect vacations have on overall happiness and how long it lasts. The study shows that the largest boost in happiness comes from the simple act of planning a vacation. The effect of vacation anticipation boosts happiness for about 8 weeks. (Returning home with photos you can’t identify, a 3rd-degree sunburn, and sand in your shorts boosts happiness for about 4 minutes.)

ONLINE SMARTS:

A new online survey of scientists, business leaders, consultants, and technology developers, as well as everyday Internet users, by North Carolina’s Elon University finds that 75% of respondents think Internet use ‘enhances and augments’ human intelligence. 66% claim it has improved reading, writing, and the ‘rendering of knowledge’. On the other hand, 21% totally disagree, saying the Internet has the opposite effect and may even lower the IQs of some who use it a lot. (It’s not about not how much you use it but what you use it for, no?)

PIRATES OF THE MULTIPLEX:
• Cops in Glendale, Australia apprehended a man videotaping “Avatar” in a theater whom they describe as being 88-years-old, 152-cm-tall (4′-10”), wearing large glasses, and carrying a walking stick. The culprit explained his wife was unable to come to the cinema so he was recording the film for her to watch later. Police deleted the file but let the man stay for the remainder of the show. (Aww, that’s sweet!)
– TheHerald.co.au
• A 42-year-old Grandview, Missouri man who was caught by MPAA investigators camcording the movie “The Dark Knight” in a US theater in 2008 has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison and a fine close to $25,000. Robert Henderson pleaded guilty to illegally recording the movie and selling it as pirated DVDs, thereby cutting into the blockbuster’s billion-dollar gross. (Oww, that’s harsh!).

FACIAL CONTORTIONS IMMINENT:
This has happened to you, right? You think a stranger you pass is talking to you but it turns out they’re just gabbing on a wireless phone headset. Well things are about to get even weirder. Japanese telecommunications giant NTT DoCoMo has created headphones that sense … eye movements. For instance, you look from right to left to pause your music. Look right, then right again, to skip to the next track. Roll eyes clockwise to raise the volume. The headphones look much like regular earbuds and are connected by a cable to a phone. (It’s the ‘eye phone’.)

FOR THE RECORD:

An Australian drag racer has set a new world record by driving a hearse 400 meters in 12.3 seconds. 43-year-old Shane Hammond achieved the feat at Powranna Dragway near Launceston, Tasmania. (Great news if you want to arrive at the cemetery ‘fresh’.)

DID YOU KNOW?

• Sake was originally made in China and it is more a rice beer than a rice wine. Its main ingredients are rice, water, and yeast which, like beer, causes fermentation that produces alcohol.

• In the Ian Fleming book, “You Only Live Twice”, ‘James Bond’ drinks sake 35 times.
