Good Morning, Sheetheads!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The medic who rushed to help “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after Hutchins was shot on set has filed a negligence lawsuit against several crew members and the film’s production entity, but notably NOT against Alec Baldwin. Cherlyn Schaefer was summoned to the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, N.M., on Oct. 21, after Hutchins and director Joel Souza were accidentally shot by Baldwin while preparing for a scene. In the suit, she alleges she has suffered “tremendous shock, trauma and severe emotional distress” as a result of Hutchins’ death, and has been medically unable to return to work. She’s the fourth crew member to file suit following the shooting.

★ Adorable puppies may be battling it out on the field on Super Bowl Sunday, but their feline counterparts will sadly be sitting this year out. Hallmark’s annual “Kitten Bowl” has officially been canceled for 2022. A Facebook post by the Hallmark Channel says: “We are not currently developing original animal-centric programming.” The annual event, coinciding with the Super Bowl, not only offered viewers an adorable event filled with kittens running around and playing, but also proved to be a major adoption event.

★ The estates of Robin Williams and George Carlin say Pandora has been “willfully” streaming the late comedians’ recorded routines without proper licensing or even “a fraction of a penny” in compensation to the trailblazing comics’ heirs. In new copyright infringement suits filed Monday alongside complaints from fellow funnymen Andrew Dice Clay, Ron White and Bill Engvall, the estates claim the comedians’ works “continue to be exploited, performed, broadcast, and streamed” across Pandora’s platforms without proper permission and without any “substantive response” to warnings over the past few years. They ask for at least $4.1 million in damages for Williams’s estate and $8.4 million for Carlin’s estate.

★ When Channing Tatum hits the dance floor again for “Magic Mike’s Last Dance”, Matthew McConaughey might be joining him. Now that Tatum is busy working on the third Magic Mike movie, he’s teasing a return for McConaughey. The Oscar-winning star played ‘Dallas’, a mentor for Tatum’s ‘Mike Lane’, in the first Magic Mike, but missed the sequel, Magic Mike XXL.

SHOOTING THE BULL

SHELF-AWARENESS:
It turns out that the Cincinnati Bengals’ TRUE star will be making an appearance at Super Bowl LVI. The team’s now-infamous “Cart’ is rolling toward LA right now. You haven’t heard of The Cart? Commonly found in high-school classrooms, the Bengals’ three-tiered metal cart went viral in October after being wheeled out for media conferences. The contraption was initially used by the Bengals to conduct interviews outdoors as a result of COVID-19 restrictions with journalists placing microphones, recorders or phones on it. And like any awesome sporting comeback story, the improvised mic stand was initially mocked before becoming a beloved inside-joke of the Bengals team and fans. Now, it even has its own Twitter account, and as the Bengals get set to take on the LA Rams, The Cart is having its big moment. A video posted by the team’s official Twitter account shows it adorned with some of the hardware the team has already won this year, with a GPS-sounding voiceover saying: “Starting route to SoFI Stadium.” The vid includes the caption: “The journey of a lifetime. Official: The Mic Cart is going to the Super Bowl.” And if the Bengals win, don’t be surprised to see the Vince Lombardi trophy being paraded on that very special 4-wheeled chariot. (Still, no matter how lucky Bengals fans think that thing is, it’s not near as lucky as you felt when your teacher wheeled one of those things into the classroom . . . with a VCR and a TV sitting on it!)

CAT’S GOT YER BACK:
The Lexington Humane Society’s annual Valentine’s “smear campaign” is back for 2022. If you have a pesky ex, or an old flame that you’d like to give the final push-off to…then listen up. Back by “poopular” demand: the Kentucky animal shelter is once again offering a chance to express your disgust for your ex. Until February 15th, you can get your ex’s name inscribed in an adoptable cat’s litter box in exchange for a $10 donation (no full names allowed). Then, as The Lexington Humane Society’s Facebook post puts it: “Our kitties will continue to fart for your broken heart through Tuesday, February 15th.”
(For those who have been “dumped”?)
(“Cat”chy idea!)
(Can you pay extra to have it delivered to your ex?)

SESQUIPEDALIAN NARRATIVE:
Sure, a large vocabulary can make you seem – and feel — very intelligent, but according to a new survey, using too many big words can also be a turn-off. What’s more, 3 in 5 people actually use big words to sound smarter – even if they don’t know the meanings. In a poll of more than 1,900 people, commissioned by Preply, 56% said they assume that someone with a complex vocabulary is very smart. And nearly 4 in 5 (78%) agree that using big words makes someone seem even smarter than they are. Which words might make you seem smarter than you are? The survey found that words such as “articulate,” “accolade,” “brevity,” “anomaly,” and “adulation” all rank as terms that might give your IQ an apparent boost. Oh, one caveat: 43% of respondents assume that people who use overly complex language are just TRYING to sound smart, and wind up simply looking pretentious. And by the way, “caveat” finished 11th on the list of words that make you sound smart. Impressed?
(I WOULD be – if either one of us had a clue what “caveat” means!)
(My wife says I don’t NEED big words to sound smart. In fact, she says I don’t need any words at all!)

WORDS THAT GEN-XERS MADE POPULAR:
Gen X, those born between 1965-80, were often depicted as relaxed, cynical, and music-loving at their cultural peak in the 1980s and ’90s. You can kinda tell . . .
☞ Chill pill:  What you tell someone to take when they are overreacting or stressed. (Needed more today than ever…)
☞ Gnarly:  It can mean “bent or “twisted”. But it can also mean “amazing”. (Gnarly, I know!)
☞ Headbanger:  Someone who loves heavy metal, which was huge in the 80s.
☞ Yuppie:  based on the acronym “young, urban professional”, it refers to an ambitious, and well-educated city-dweller who has a career and an affluent lifestyle.” (And a scarf around the popped collar of his Lacoste alligator shirt!)
☞ Diss:  To insult someone, or treat them with well, disrespect. (‘Diss tracks’ came much later, though…)
☞ Hella:  It can be an adverb meaning “very, extremely,” as in “that pizza is hella good”. It can also be an adjective, meaning “many, much,” as in “we ate hella pizza last night”. (So, it’s a hella-useful word!)
☞ Trippin’:  Means you’re acting like a fool, you’re being too excited, or you’re too bothered about something. (What if you’re trippin’ on chill pills?)
☞ Rock:  Of course, the word goes way back before the 80s, but it was the 80s when it started to be used then as a compliment. If someone says “you rock”, it means “you’re absolutely awesome.”
☞ To the max:  Short for “to the maximum,” it means “completely” or “extremely.”
☞ Dude:  In the 80s, ‘dude’ became a term of address, like “hey, dude”, and of exclamation, like “Dude, that’s awesome!” (And in the 90s, “Dude, where’s my car?”)

DID YOU KNOW?
For the first time, chimpanzees have been spotted applying “medicine” to each others’ wounds. In what may be an example of empathy among animals, the chimps were seen capturing insects and applying them to their own wounds, as well as the wounds of others, possibly as a form of medication, during a study conducted in Gabon. The study lead said: “Our 2 closest living relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos . . . swallow leaves of plants with (antiparasitic) properties and chew bitter leaves . . . to kill intestinal parasites, but this is the first recorded instance of animals applying other animal matter — the insects — to open wounds.”

• “Home Warranty Day”, to educate home builders, real estate professionals and homeowners about insurance-backed structural warranties and home warranty service agreements, and how they can protect when the unexpected happens. (I don’t have a warranty on my A/C, but it’d be a lot cooler if I did!)
• “Plimsoll Day”, honoring Samuel Plimsoll, a member of English Parliament back in the day who championed sailors’ safety while traveling the world’s waterways in crammed-full ships. The “Plimsoll line”, or waterline on a ship where the hull meets the water surface is named after him.
• “International Cribbage Day” Cribbage is one of the oldest regularly played card games. The game was created by Sir John Suckling in the early 17th century, and is derived from the Old English game “nod”.
