Good Morning, Sheetheads!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Burt Bacharach, one of the most prolific composer/songwriters in American history — responsible for enormous hits like ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head’ and ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ — has died at age 94. Bacharach died Wednesday at his LA home, of natural causes, according to his publicist. Bacharach and his composing partner, Hal David, composed a string of Dionne Warwick hits, including ‘Do You Know The Way to San Jose’, ‘Walk on By’ and ‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’. Other artists who recorded his songs include Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield, Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones. In all, he scored 73 Top 40 hits in the US. The 8-time Grammy winner and 3-time Oscar winner also had cameos as himself in the first 2 Austin Powers movies, performing new versions of 2 of his hits.

★ Disney has confirmed that it has sequels on the way for “Toy Story”, “Frozen” and “Zootopia”. During an earnings call with investors, CEO Bob Iger made the announcement, saying the company will have “more to share about these productions soon”. The last entry in the main “Toy Story” franchise was 2019’s acclaimed “Toy Story 4”. Last year, Pixar released the spin-off film “Lightyear”, which failed to meet expectations at the box office. On Twitter, Tim Allen confirmed that he’ll be returning to voice ‘Buzz Lightyear’ for “Toy Story 5”. In the spin-off, the character was voiced by Chris Evans. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yckmb5ew

★ Elizabeth Banks isn’t ashamed of her past work. As director, she was behind beloved audience favourites like “Pitch Perfect 2”, but also worked on 2019’s “Charlies’ Angels”, which IS universally considered a failure. Banks, who also produced, wrote, and starred in the film, accepted its performance with grace, tweeting at the time, “if you’re going to have a flop, make sure your name is on it at least 4x.” While promoting her new project, “Cocaine Bear” (out Feb. 24), Banks said she “took full responsibility for Charlie’s Angels”, and the new dark comedy is also “a ginormous risk,” even joking it “could be a career ender for me.”

★ James Cameron will be competing with James Cameron this weekend. While there’s a chance his latest epic “Avatar: The Way of Water” could overtake “Titanic” as the third-biggest movie in history, don’t count Titanic out yet. The re-release of the 1998 opus will sail out to 2,400 Imax screens, and based on estimates, the tragic romance of ‘Jack’ and ‘Rose’ just might outpace the recent re-release of the original “Avatar”. The first trip to Pandora, which still ranks as the highest-grossing film in history, generated $10 million in North America and $20.5 million internationally during its theatrical re-issue last fall.
-Variety
★ Salma Hayek Pinault hit it off with her “Magic Mike” stripper costars. She stars in “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” as a wealthy socialite who has Magic Mike assemble a crew of male dancers for a liberating stage show in a stuffy London theatre. Hayek Pinault says she became good friends with her cast mates who play the strippers — eventually even inviting them to the house she shares with her husband, French businessman François-Henri Pinault. As Hayek Pinault pointed out to her interviewer: “My husband is not a jealous man.”

★ Netflix is setting the record straight about its password sharing restrictions. Amid recent reports regarding the eventual introduction of anti-password-sharing measures in the US, the company has stated that limitations regarding account sharing began rolling out in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain on Feb. 8. Netflix did not say when the rules will be introduced stateside, though co-CEO Greg Peters has said that’ll happen next month. Netflix users will be able to set a primary location, “ensuring that anyone who lives in their household can use their Netflix account”, and have the option to “add an extra member sub account for up to 2 people they don’t live with.” In Canada, this will cost an additional $7.99 per month per person.

SHOOTING THE BULL

THIS WEEK’S MOVIE OPENINGS:
• “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (R- Comedy/Drama): “Magic” Mike takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, for what he hopes will be one last hurrah. But a wealthy socialite lures him with an offer he can’t refuse. (Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek, Caitlin Gerard) Tomatometer: 58%, No audience score.
• “Consecration” (R, Horror/Mystery – limited): After the suspicious death of her brother, a priest, a woman goes to a convent in Scotland to find out what really happened. THE UGLY TRUTH:
People who perceive themselves to be less attractive wear protective masks more often, according to a new report. A recent study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that those who are not particularly confident in their looks were more willing to wear a mask, particularly in situations where they are motivated to make a good impression. The study’s authors, from Seoul University, wrote: “Our findings suggest that mask-wearing can shift from being a self-protection measure during the COVID-19 pandemic to a self-presentation tactic in the post-pandemic era.”
(Well, they always said that we should wear one to protect others, not ourselves!)
(Is that why some kid downtown called me a “double-masker” yesterday?)

VALENTIME:
☞ This year, Americans will shell out $192.80, on average, on candy, cards, flowers and other gifts for friends, loved ones, classmates and even coworkers for Valentine’s Day, according to a report from the National Retail Council. That’s up about $17 from last year. Those in a relationship will spend roughly $187 for their significant other, according to a separate survey. That’s despite the fact that many Americans are already going into more debt just to afford their day-to-day expenses as prices rise. 27% said they’ll need to rely on credit cards to cover Valentine’s Day costs. Another survey found Canadians plan to spend about $104 on their Valentine (and totally forget about their friends and coworkers!).
☞ Walmart has a little something special for those who have a “not-so-significant other” this Valentine’s Day. The retailer is selling a stuffed teddy bear holding a ‘broken in 2’ heart that says “LOVE”, and the little guy is also wearing a shirt that says: “Bye bye!” The 9-inch-tall stuffed animal, which also dances on demand, is named the “Way To Celebrate!” bear — even though the recipient might not really feel like celebrating. The brown bear dances to the *NSYNC hit song ‘Bye Bye Bye’ when its foot is pressed. The Way to Celebrate! bear is selling for $16.98. (But remember – a breakup text is cheaper!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A New York man’s dreams of an idyllic Australian getaway didn’t quite go off as planned after a small mistake in the details resulted in the destination of Sidney, Montana, rather than the warm Aussie metropolis of Sydney. Kingsley Burnett said he knew there was a problem when he saw the mountain top covered in white snow upon arrival. The other problem? He was scheduled to jump on a cruise ship down under. Sidney, Montana boasts a population of about 6,000 people, while Sydney’s population is over 5 million. Burnett said he’d gotten confused by the airport codes while booking the flight. The Australian city’s shortform is ‘SYD’, while Sidney, Montana’s is ‘SDY’. (For a while there, he thought he was on the world’s fastest airplane!)
➢ A Venezuelan man has become the first person to be permanently tattooed by a – monkey.
Funky Matas, an artist and social media influencer, already holds the Guinness Record for the most signatures tattooed on his back (over 220). He trained a small monkey to handle a tattoo gun and then let himself be tattooed by the animal in what is considered a first-of-its-kind experiment. He wrote on social media that “The intention…was to create the logo of the NFTs project that I started with my partner…And while the tattoo itself wasn’t the best in terms of quality, the event was a fascinating look into the capabilities of these highly intelligent animals.” (That means he’s not sure what the monkey drew, either!) DID YOU KNOW?
As of Mon. Feb 6, it’s been 5 years since SpaceX caused a stir by launching Elon Musk’s personal Tesla roadster into outer space, sending the car on an endless journey where it’s expected to remain for millennia. At the 5 year mark, data estimates showed the cherry-colored sports car had completed about 3¼ loops around the sun and was then about 203 million miles (327 million km) from Earth, according to the tracking website www.whereisroadster.com . On the other hand, it’s difficult to say for sure where the vehicle is — or to determine if it’s still in one piece, as it’s possible the car has been obliterated by a meteor or eroded beyond recognition by radiation, because current data is based only on calculated estimates of the car’s trajectory. (Elon’s trajectory, however, we’re pretty sure about…!)

• “Flannel Day”, a day for people to wear their best lumberjack-esque attire and enjoy a piece of clothing made to keep them warm during a long winter. (So put on your Canadian uniform!)
• “Teddy Day”, We’ve been playing with them since childhood. This reflects our nurturing personality and is a symbol of affection. The teddy bear is named after President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.
• “Umbrella Day”, honoring the famous invention designed to protect against rain or sunlight. “Parasol” usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun; “Umbrella” refers to one more suited to protect from rain. (But some of us use ‘umbrella’ for both…sort of an ‘umbrella’ term!)
• “Home Warranty Day”, to educate home builders, real estate professionals and homeowners about insurance-backed structural warranties and home warranty service agreements, and how they can protect when the unexpected happens. (I don’t have a warranty on my A/C, but it’d be a lot cooler if I did!)
• “Plimsoll Day”, honoring Samuel Plimsoll, a member of English Parliament back in the day who championed sailors’ safety. The “Plimsoll line”, or waterline on a ship where the hull meets the water surface, is named after him.
• “International Cribbage Day” Cribbage is one of the oldest regularly played card games. It was created by Sir John Suckling in the early 17th century, and is derived from the Old English game “nod”.
• “No One Eats Alone Day”, a school-based day of action that encourages youth to sit with others, find new friends, and model ways to end social isolation in the lunchroom. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bv39kzxd

SATURDAY-
• “Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day”, an annual reminder that everyone screws up now and then. It’s a day to be optimistic, think positive, look on the bright side, and find something good in whatever happens. (Also, a good day to argue whether the correct term is ‘spilled’ or ‘spilt’)

• “Shut-in Visitation Day”, encouraging us to brighten the day for someone who is unable to get out and about.

SUNDAY-

• “Lincoln’s Birthday”, celebrating the birth of the 16th president of the USA (1861-65). The “President’s Day” holiday (Feb. 20 this year), honors the birthdays of both Presidents Lincoln and Washington.
• “Lost Penny Day”, set aside to collect all of those wasted pennies stashed in jars and drawers around the house and donate them to charity. (Because a penny saved is … a waste of time.)
• “National Freedom to Marry Day”, a non-official US occasion to promote same-sex marriage. It was founded in 1999 by Lambda Legal, a gay rights advocacy law firm.
• “Paul Bunyan Day”, celebrating the gigantic lumberjack who was “born” on this date in 1834, according to American folklore. The story says it took 5 giant storks to deliver Paul to his parents. His first bed was a lumber wagon pulled by a team of horses. As an adult, Bunyan and his blue ox ‘Babe’ travelled around the country, where he became known for his logging feats.
• “Super Chicken Wing Day”, Yes, there is a “National Chicken Wing Day” in July, but they just couldn’t let the Super Bowl happen without its perfect accompaniment! http://www.nationalchickenwingday.com/
