BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Yesterday morning, Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan announced the nominees for the 94th Annual Academy Awards. “The Power of the Dog” earned 12 nominations — including for real-life couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons — who play husband and wife in the drama. “Dune”, the sci-fi epic starring Timothée Chalamet, earned 10 nods, while “Belfast” and “West Side Story” both got 7. And as producer of West Side Story, Steven Spielberg has set a new record, having now produced 11 films nominated for best picture. The Oscars will air live on ABC on March 27.

★ The first trailer for the TV series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will debut on Super Bowl Sunday. The teaser will cap off the first wave of promotion for the massively ambitious show, which launched Jan. 19 when Amazon unveiled the full title in an elaborate video. Set to debut Prime Video Sept. 2, “The Rings of Power” is the rare streaming series to earn a major promotional cycle more than 6 months before its debut, which is fitting given that Amazon spent roughly $465 million on the first season alone. That’s on top of the $250 million the company spent to secure the rights to the series from J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate.

★ David Fincher’s 1999 cult classic “Fight Club” has been restored to its original state in China — almost. After widespread online backlash to clumsy censorship of the film’s ending, Chinese streaming service Tencent Video has backtracked and restored 11 of the 12 minutes it had cut from the movie. The minute still missing is mostly comprised of nude sex scenes, but crucially, Fight Club’s complete ending is now viewable in full in China. Reversals of censorship actions are extremely rare within China’s entertainment industry — but cuts to Hollywood movies are not.

★ The new Kardashians reality series has a premiere date. Hulu has announced that the original series “The Kardashians” will make its debut Apr. 14. Hulu is the new home for the clan of reality stars, whose E! series “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” wrapped in June 2021. New storylines will likely include Kim’s divorce from Kanye West (now known legally as “Ye”), Kourtney’s engagement to Travis Barker, Kylie’s pregnancy, the Astroworld tragedy and subsequent lawsuits against Kylie’s partner, Travis Scott. (“Original” series? It doesn’t sound very original to me!)

SHOOTING THE BULL

VALENTINELESS DAY:
With Valentine’s Day coming on Monday, it brings up that age-old question: What are you supposed to do if you’re single? According to CNET “Love Syncs” advice columnist Erin Carson, the first thing to do is to NOT hide. Round up other friends who don’t have plans and make a night out of it. Another idea is to send Valentines to your friends. This could be an e-gift card for a coffee, or even a good old-fashioned Valentine’s Day card-card. Also, definitely give yourself a break from the “match-up” apps. The 14th isn’t a ‘deadline’, so don’t treat it as one, and just take a breather. And finally: Buy the discount candy. You’re not eating your feelings. You’re fighting inflation.
(I always get Halloween and Valentine’s Day confused. They’re both all about candy and being something you’re not!)
(And let’s face it – If I’m not single…there’s hope for EVERYONE!)

SCIENTISTS SAY (Dog Patrol edition):
➢ Dog waste is so full of nutrients that it is damaging nature reserves, according to new research. A surprising study conducted by scientists at Ghent University in Belgium reveals that a dog’s waste (urine and feces) contains so much nitrogen and phosphorus, it’s actually beyond the legal limits for fertilization. While dog owners typically pick up after their pets in cities, that’s often not the case when giving their dogs free rein on country walks. The scientists say man’s best friend might not be as helpful in “fertilizing” nature as people may think, and recommends that people walking their dogs in green spaces should still pick up after their pooch. (OK, but if they want me to do that, they’re going to have to back off on that plastic bag ban that everyone’s talking about!)
➢ Nice pups finish last? A new study says that friendlier dogs “rank” lower than their more dominant pals in the dog hierarchy. A team at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary found that, even if they live in the same loving home, friendliness conveyed a negative connection to dominance scores among dogs. The study of over 1,000 canines also found that age plays into this hierarchy. It turns out dogs respect their elders, as older dogs were found more likely to be dominant. (This is different from people, where dominance is established by driving a BMW and not using turn signals…)

A NEW PIZZA INFORMATION:
Sometimes it’s horrifying, but it’s still our job to bring you important information that you need to be aware of. Like this, for example: According to a survey, 1 in 12 people admit to . . . eating their pizza with a knife and fork! A poll of 2,000 pizza-lovers in the US also unboxed these new “pizza information” – just in time for “Pizza Day”, today . . .
• 94% have eaten a pizza within the past month.
• 72% say they love pizza so much, they could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner and never get bored of it.
• 47% think pizza is the perfect food for next-day leftovers.
• 65% consider themselves a “pizza expert”.
• 33% would shave all the hair from their body, eyebrows included, for unlimited pizza.
And if you can get your mind off THAT visual for a second, the 3 favorite toppings were: pepperoni, sausage and onions, while the most despised toppings were anchovies (of course), pineapple and jalapenos.
(What, exactly, is this thing called “pizza leftovers” that you speak of?)
(Eating pizza with a knife and fork? Not at MY Super Bowl party!)

WORTH MIRTH:
A recent Reddit thread asked: “What do you really want to buy, but aren’t sure if it’s worth the money?”  Here are some of the responses . . .
✗ “An air fryer. Everyone is telling me they’re fantastic, but I’d hate to buy one and only use it once or twice.”
✗ “A weighted blanket. Mine was a waste of money. I’m a side sleeper, and it gave me hip pain. Plus, it was just insufferably hot. It just wasn’t for me.”
✗ “Tattoo removal vs. just getting it covered up.”
✗ “A house. I’m single, it’s a terrible market, and all my friends talk about how they need to fix different parts of their homes. I don’t want to spend my life thinking about ways to fix it up.”
✗ “Business-class flights. I really like the idea but really can’t justify the cost!”
✗ “A robot vacuum.”
✗ “An Apple Watch. (also, Airpods)”
✗ “A college degree. Often experience is more valuable than the degree, but you can’t always get the experience without the degree. It’s a vicious cycle.”
(What would you add to the list? And what definitely IS worth the money?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Humans are slowly losing their sense of smell, according to a study. Olfactory receptors detect airborne chemicals that waft into our noses, but smell receptors vary immensely from one person to the next. The results of the new study of 1,000 people by the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health support a long-standing hypothesis that human sense of smell may have degraded over time due to changes in the genes that encode our smell receptors. (Not true, when it comes to [***afternoon guy***]! He still smells just as much as he ever did!)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Chocolate Day”, started by the Confectioners Association to promote what is almost every woman’s (and many a man’s) weakness. Some say chocolate from the New World (mostly Mexico) was introduced to Europe on this date in 1550.
• “Toothache Day” in honor of the feast day of St. Apollonia, patron saint of dentists, and those suffering from toothaches. (It doesn’t help that it’s chocolate day!)
• “Read In the Bathtub Day”, an excuse to luxuriate in a steamy tub with a great novel. (NOT on your Kindle… zap!)
• “Bagels & Lox Day”, a food holiday celebrating the deli favorite that involves topping a fresh-baked bagel with salmon fillet that has been cured.
• “Develop Alternative Vices Day”, a day to change your habits and improve yourself. (They say 1 in 7 of your friends has a gambling addiction. My money’s on Larry!)
• “Cut the Cord Day”, memorializing Sling TV, the first streaming service to deliver live television, which debuted on February 9, 2015. (And it’s still out there, with 2.6 million subscribers!)
• “Pizza Day”, saluting what is likely the world’s favorite pie. A few facts …
– The first pizza was sold in Naples, Italy in 1738.
– Over 5 billion pizzas are sold each year.
– More pizzas are sold on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year.
– About 17% of all restaurants are pizzerias, or at least serve pizza.
– On average, Americans consume over 23 lbs. (10.5kg) of pizza per year.
