★ A vintage copy of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1984 movie “The Terminator” on VHS has sold for an unbelievable $32,500. The purchase through ComicConnect.com saw a buyer shell out the incredible amount, even though there was no bidding war, and the buyer’s price was the only offer. ComicConnect and its grading system is trusted by many, so the thinking is this could be one of the most pristine VHS copies of The Terminator anywhere.

SHOOTING THE BULL

MATCHES.COM?
Here’s a dating app with a different angle: “Fourplay” lets singles go on double dates…and it has a waiting list 9,000 names long. The idea is this: You, as a single, could create a joint profile with a friend – so you wouldn’t have to go on a date to meet a stranger alone. Fourplay matches you and your single friend’s profile with the shared profiles of other pairs of singles, setting up pressure-free double dates. As co-developer Julie Griggs puts it: “If two people meet on a Fourplay date and want to go on a romantic date after that, great! If someone comes away from a Fourplay date with one or two new friends, great!” “If you didn’t vibe at all with the people you went out with … at least you were with a friend so it wasn’t a waste of a night.” Fourplay is currently limited to people in the New York City area, but with new investors coming aboard, it should be available internationally soon.
(So, as usual, my only source of female contact would be through my much-better-looking friends!)
(Good idea. I don’t like the name, though. ‘Course, that could be ’cause I’m a guy…)
(How did someone not think of this sooner?)

LITTLE SUCKERS:

Mosquitoes are more attracted to people who wear red, orange or black clothes, according to scientists.
University of Washington researchers looked into ways of helping us steer clear of the annoying pests and their itchy bites. They found that if you’re looking to avoid mosquitos, it is best to wear green, purple, blue or white. You should also completely cover up, though, because all human skin appears red to them. The scientists say once mosquitos have smelled a plume of CO2 from human breath, they zero in on red, orange and black. They also enjoy other colors like aqua and cyan. Knowing what lures them may open the door to developing better mosquito repellents and other methods to keep them at bay. It could also help people avoid potentially contracting Zika or West Nile viruses, and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
(Cyan? Great. Apparently, mosquitos know more colors than I do!)
(It’s OK, I’ve already been bled dry by the government – and my teenagers!)

COOL TWIX:
As you probably know, Krispy Kreme donuts are, in a word awesome. And so are chocolate (candy) bars. So, when you put the 2 together, well, how could that be anything less than perfect? The donut chain has partnered with the makers of Twix for a new line of donuts, including one that is STUFFED WITH AN ENTIRE TWIX BAR! The 3 new “caramelly, cookie-ie, crunchy” donuts all take the delicious flavor of the iconic candy bar and transforms them into donut from. First, there’s the Caramel Cookie Crunch Original Filled Donut. It features a chocolate iced donut that is filled with salted caramel filling, topped with Twix Bar pieces and drizzled with dulce de leche. The Mini Caramel Cookie Donut, meanwhile, is made of an Original Glazed mini that is dipped in chocolate icing and topped with TWIX pieces. And . . . wait for it . . . the pièce de resistance is the Caramel Cookie Crunch Bar donut, filled with a TWIX Cookie Bar. This bar-shaped donut is not only filled with Chocolate Kreme, but also a full-size Twix candy bar. Then, of course, it is dipped in chocolate icing, drizzled with dulce de leche and chocolate icing, and topped with even more Twix pieces. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3dpn9nrv
(…just in case you had any bright ideas about trying to eat it without getting seeing your heartbeat in your eyes…)
(Remember when Krispy Kreme was giving free donuts to anyone who was vaccinated? Now, they’re giving free Twix donuts to anyone who brings insulin!)

ONCE-POPULAR BABY NAMES THAT ARE NOW SUPER RARE:
Thanks to the duke and duchess of Sussex, their baby’s name ‘Archie’ skyrocketed to the top of the name charts in 2019. Before the birth of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, Archie was best-known for being Jughead’s best friend in the comics. That shows how names, like fashion, pop in and out of popularity over the years. Here are some that have fallen into obscurity over the last century. . . according to the US Social Security database . . .
Girls:
1. Blanche:  In the 1910s, there were 22,000 new Blanches. In 2019? Less than 5.
2. Willie (yup, for girls):  While there were still 5 girls named Willie a few years ago, in the early 1900s, nearly 30,000 per year were.
3. Sue:  In the 1940s, there were about 41,000 girls named Sue each year. Now? Like, 6.
4. Patsy:  Patsy was popular in the 40s, to the tune of 40,000 of them per year. Just 11 in 2019.
5. Carole and Bessie (tie): Carole went from over 50,000 per year in the 40s to 11 in 2019, while in the 1910s, you could expect 34,000 Bessies per year, but also just 11 3 years ago.

Boys:
1. Bob:  In the 1930s, Bob was popular to the tune of 23,000 per year. 2019? Only 14. (Doesn’t include ‘Roberts’)
2. Homer:  You could see 11,500 Homers per year in the 1910s, but just 23 were given that name in 2019 (Doh!)
3. Bill:  In the 40s, 38,000 per year were billed Bill. In 2019, just 28. (Bills are past due?)
4. Wilbur:  12,500 Wilburs showed up each year in the 1910s, but just 36 in 2019.
5. Jim:  In the 40s, about 35,500 were named Jim each year. In 2019, just 39.
(What baby name would sound weird these days…to you?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Most of today’s parents agree that raising kids today is much harder than it was for their folks. A survey, conducted by OnePoll, found that while technology may seem to make parents’ lives easier, 74% of parents think it is more challenging to raise a child now than it was when they were growing up. How so? The top factors that make modern parenting a tougher job are the emergence of social media (66%), more parents working full-time (64%), and, perhaps surprisingly, the rise of technology (58%). 68% admit that they feel like they lean too much on iPads and other devices to keep their kids occupied, while 72% say they value electronics-free time with their kids the most. (Which is why I insist my kids bathe!)

BS CHRONOMETER 02.23.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Pink Shirt Day” in Canada, a semi-annual event in which participants sign and wear a pink shirt to take a visible stance against bullying. The color is based on a campaign started by Travis Price and David Shepherd, who took a stand for a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. LINK: www.pinkshirtday.ca
• “Curling is Cool Day”, celebrating the Winter sport of curling … basically a drinking game with some housecleaning interspersed. In tribute, here are some . . .
BS REASONS CURLING IS BETTER THAN SEX:

✓ You can yell “Hurry, hurry, hard!” without anyone taking much notice.
✓ You can score more than once in each end.
✓ You can do it in 8 houses in less than 2 hours.
✓ You get to shoot your rocks 16 times in just 1 game.
✓ You can use your rubber more than once.
✓ Short is not always bad.
✓ Men don’t fall asleep when play is completed.
✓ The ice-maker always cleans the sheets when you’re done.
• “Banana Bread Day”, the first cookbooks mentioning banana bread were published during the Great Depression. Culinary historians believe that a resourceful housewife who didn’t want to throw away over-ripe bananas may have invented the original recipe.
• “Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day”. A poll of pet owners found that about ⅓ have eaten dog food at one time or another, most likely just to see what it tastes like (Or to gross out their sister!)
• “Diesel Engine Day”, on this day in 1893, Rudolf Diesel received a patent for his diesel engine. Instead of gasoline, this engine burns fuel oil, and uses compressed air in the cylinder instead of a spark to ignite the fuel.
• “National Rationalization Day”, all about observing the fake reasons or false excuses given for not finishing work, or doing it wrong. Today, we should try to correct the mistakes we’ve made because of rationalization. (How do I get the dog to “un-eat” my homework?)
• “Inconvenience Yourself Day”, not merely about inconveniencing oneself, it is about acknowledging others, putting them first, and having a positive effect on their lives. (There’s a meme that says: “There are 2 types of people: Those who believe in doing what’s best for everyone even if it means personal sacrifice, and those who see their own inconvenience as unacceptable, no matter what.” Perfect!)
