SHOOTING THE BULL

LIFE LOVES THE FUN-LOVERS:
Do you consider yourself to be the “fun-loving” type? If you do, that’s a good thing, because new research has found that playful people are resilient. That means, in this case, that they are better-equipped to find silver linings in difficult situations – and find creative solutions. A team from Oregon State University and Vanderbilt University found in their study that playful people aren’t just wearing “rose-colored glasses”. They actually carry what the researchers call a “color spotlight,” which selectively highlights opportunities for growth and enjoyment — while maintaining realism about difficult situations.
This means that instead of naively believing everything will work out, playful individuals are able to reframe their circumstances in ways that make life more engaging, regardless of how tough a situation might be for them.
(Finally, a study that justifies my life motto: “When in doubt, just make a joke out of it.”)
(So…basically, my ability to laugh at my own terrible decisions is a superpower?)

STREAMING TABLE SERVICE:
Netflix has opened its own themed-restaurant on the Las Vegas strip. Visitors to the area can now stop by “Netflix Bites”, at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, to sample food creations based on the streaming service’s top shows and movies. The restaurant is there on a “one-year culinary residency” where guests can “dig into dishes and drinks that bring the magic of the screen to the table”, the company said. Such as?
• Bridgerton Regency Tea ($65 per person, 3-course service)
• The WWE Smashburger ($23)
• A “Too Hot to Handle”-inspired Bloody Mary ($18)
• The Mind Flayer ($24)
• “Stranger Wings” ($18)
• The Pink Soldier ($18), a nod to the “Squid Game” guards that “puts Korean soju in the spotlight.”
Netflix Bites Vegas is patterned on the streamer’s 2023 pop-up restaurant in L.A., for which reservations were fully booked for more than 6 weeks. FULL MENU: https://tinyurl.com/4xcb4t7d
(Knowing me, I’d end up pausing my meal — and coming back to finish it 3 months later!)
(Finally! A place where I can binge-eat while I binge-watch!)
(Obviously, there’s a $7 fee if you choose to share!)

APPLE UNDER WHERE?
Ever tried wearing your Apple Watch on your…ankle? Many people are these days. I’m not kidding – hear me out. According to a New York Times report, a growing number of people are doing so, with 5 main reasons cited. The most mundane of these are people with tiny wrists who find the watch is too loose during workouts. OK. Fair enough. Some people also claim they get more accurate step counts when wearing it on their ankle — when walking or running. Step-counting relies on the swinging motion of your arm, which can be less consistent than the motion of your feet – especially if you’re pushing a stroller or shopping cart. Others who have wrist tattoos have reported that heart-rate readings are either unavailable or unreliable when the sensor is blocked – or partly blocked by the ink. Some with skin conditions say they have found the Apple Watch uncomfortable, but feel wearing it on the less sensitive skin around their ankles feels OK. And lastly, some medical professionals aren’t permitted to wear watches due to hygiene rules in hospitals, so they say they have taken to wearing it around an ankle to track the often ‘crazy’ number of steps they walk during a shift. And BTW, a surprisingly common issue reported by those who wear their smartwatch on an ankle is others mistaking it for the type of ankle monitor that some convicted criminals or suspects awaiting trial are required to wear by law. (So now my ankle can tell me I’m lazy, too? Great…)
(I guess it’s only a matter of time before we start wearing our phones as necklaces, too?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Once again this year for Valentine’s Day, zoos are raising funds by giving the broken-hearted a chance to get back at their ex. For example, the San Antonio Zoo invites you make a donation, then name a cockroach, rodent, or vegetable after your ex — that’ll then be fed to a resident animal. And for a donation of $15, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will let you name a superworm after an ex. It’ll end up being fed to the zoo’s sloth bears. (It may be the only way to feed your ex to a zoo animal without becoming the subject of a ‘true-crime’ podcast!) LINK: https://sazoo.org/crymeacockroach/

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .

• “International Condom Day”, initiated by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in 2009 in an effort to reduce the spread of HIV through safe sex practices. Some organizations celebrate this occasion on Feb. 14. We say: “Do both!” (I take a condom with me wherever I go. Unfortunately, it’s always the same one…)
• “Employee Legal Awareness Day”, a day to make employees aware of the legal duties involved in conducting their day-to-day activities and the legal risks incurred by failure to fulfil those duties.
• “Cheddar Day”. The stuff got its start in the 12th century in the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England. Today, it is made in many countries and is eaten more than any other cheese in the world. (And remember the #1 rule of cheese: “There’s no such thing as too much cheese!”)
