BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Hayden Panettiere has broken her silence on the death of her younger brother, Jansen, thanking everyone for their love and revealing his cause of death. In a statement to ABC News yesterday, the Panettiere family said: “Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications.” The 28-year-old was found dead in his apartment in the New York suberb of Nyack last weekend. According to a police report, his friends became alarmed after didn’t show up for a business meeting, and he was found unresponsive in a chair.

★ Arnold Schwarzenegger is back, baby. Netflix has released a first-look teaser for his new thriller series “Fubar,” out May 25. The spy adventure show, which will also star Monica Barbaro (“Top Gun: Maverick”), marks the “Terminator” actor’s first headlining TV series. The previously untitled action-comedy follows a father and daughter who learn that they’ve both secretly been working as CIA operatives for years. Realizing their entire relationship has been a lie, they’re forced to team up as partners. The 8-episode, hour-long show also features Jay Baruchel. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2thphh9h

★ With the coronation of King Charles just 2 months away, reports are emerging that planners are having a difficult time lining up entertainment. A star-studded concert is being put together at Windsor Castle to follow the ceremony, but apparently, Elton John, the Spice Girls and Harry Styles have all been asked, and have all declined. It’s nothing personal, simply that the artists’ schedules are jam-packed. Other A-listers reported to have turned down the event include Ed Sheeran, Adele and Robbie Williams, although his former bandmates in Take That are in. Also confirmed to perform are Kylie and Dannii Minogue, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lionel Richie, and organizers are still working to add to the event’s star power.

★ Netflix has teamed with The Pokémon Company on a stop-motion animated series marking 17 years since the release of the first Pokémon game. “Pokémon Concierge” will follow ‘Haru’, a concierge at the Pokémon Resort, and her interactions with the Pokémon and their owners who visit as guests. The stop-motion project was unveiled yesterday at Pokémon Day, coming 17 years after the first Pokémon game was released. ★ There are no plans to make a “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” movie with the original film stars, despite a viral rumor. A Warner spokesperson has debunked the claim, and it’s unlikely Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, or Emma Watson would want to play those roles again. Radcliffe, with a thriving post-Harry Potter career, has already said he’s not interested in going backward. On Feb. 15, it was reported that Warner is developing a film (or two) based on The Cursed Child due to the play’s popularity on stage in London. The spokesperson said that the report is “false”.

★ “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong has hinted he is considering the prospect of a spin-off from his worldwide hit show. The British writer and show-runner has already confirmed that his comedy-drama will come to an end with the upcoming 4th season. The Guardian newspaper reports that Armstrong is musing about the possibilities of a separate show, potentially to follow one of his central characters, or to concentrate on one of the several main themes. So far, Succession has accrued 13 Emmy Awards, including two for Best Drama Series.

SHOOTING THE BULL

MOMMY BRAIN:
For years, the term “Mommy-brain” has been used to describe the brain fog many moms say they experience during pregnancy and after. But despite how common it has become for moms-to-be (and moms) to be thought of as scattered or forgetful, a group of scientists now says the idea of “mommy brain” needs to be re-examined . . . and rebranded. Clare McCormack, Ph.D., a research assistant professor at NYU Langone Medical Center, says the term has become a self-fulfilling prophecy, where an expectant mom “might expect to experience fogginess and forgetfulness, so when an everyday moment of forgetfulness happens…it’s confirming what you thought you would see, and it can really become ingrained.” But she says no current research has conclusively pointed to the idea of “mommy brain”, and not enough research has been done on what exactly happens to the brain with pregnancy and motherhood.
(So…I suppose the term “Momnesia” isn’t much better?)
(OK. What’s MY excuse?)

PAY PER CHEW:
You pay for a monthly subscription for streaming services, pet food and even diapers. So why not restaurants? Many large chains like Panera and P.F. Chang’s and even local neighborhood diners are experimenting with the subscription model as a way to ensure steady business. Some are offering unlimited drinks or free delivery for a monthly fee, while others promise free appetizers with every visit. And why not? Stats show the average American consumer already pays for 6.7 subscriptions, up from 4.2 in 2019. One of the better-known restaurant subscriptions is offered by Taco Bell, whose $10 Taco Lover’s Pass, let subscribers get a taco every day for a month. It was introduced in January 2022 and again in October; and the chain is currently looking at ways to make it more valuable to consumers, such as offering faster service, or access to unique menu items.
(Oh, I can assure you…there’s nothing faster than Taco Bell!)
(What business should take the idea of a subscription and make it their own?)

THE TYPE OF POP-UP YOU WANT TO SEE:
I love this. An IT company in India has come up with an unusual way to ensure employees maintain a healthy work-life balance. It has created software that reminds them when their shift is up and it’s time to head home. Softgrid Computers’ software features a notification system that kicks in the moment an employee’s shift is over, warning them that “the office system will shut down in 10 minutes” and telling them to “please go home”. This comes as more research focuses on adverse effect of long working hours on the health and relationships of workers. One study showed that 55 or more hours a week can lead to a 35% higher risk of stroke, and a 17% higher risk of dying from heart disease. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mmef68k2
(Just think of the fun the office prankster could have with this!)
(We have that here, too. But it’s not software. It’s a CLOCK!)

STUFF CASINOS DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW:
☞ Visual and sounds effects affect your desire to gamble:  You know how when you walk into a casino all you hear is the constant ringing of bells and lights flashing all over the place? That’s to give you the false impression that everyone must be hitting the jackpot!
☞ They avoid the use of windows and doors to trick your perception of time: They don’t want clocks to remind you that you’ve been there for hours. And windows are distraction, and distractions waste casinos’ valuable revenue. (Plus, they’ve already got enough stuff to clean in there!)
☞ Slots are placed strategically:  Heavy traffic areas are ideal places for premium slots (the ones that attract the most players). These are often near the entrance or places that connect to other parts of the casino. Slots you see farther in the back are ones that get fewer wagers, but may give you the best odds to win. (Challenge accepted!)
☞ Slots don’t get hot or cold:  All slot machines use an algorithm to come up with the results or symbols landing on the reels for each spin. Slots being on a winning or losing streak is perhaps the most believed misconception or legend.
☞ Huge jackpots are often played across multiple casinos:  The reason the highest-paying Las Vegas casinos often have $1 million worth of jackpot prizes is due to their progressive slots that are linked to each other. Some even go as high as $10 million.
☞ Blackjack, Craps and Roulette have the best odds:  These games have the lowest house edge of 0.5% to 2.70%, in order. (The best odds…until I’m playing!)
☞ Most casino chips have a computer chip:  Many casinos use radio-frequency identification chips for various purposes, including security. Each RFID embedded chip allows casinos to track their chip’s movements.
☞ They can ban you if you win too much, too often:  Players who keep on winning and increasing their bankroll will get a visit from casino staff. They’ll deliver a polite warning that they cannot afford you and you’ll be asked to leave the gambling floor. Online casinos will do the digital equivalent (of taking their ball and going home!)
☞ Some players REALLY go for it:  Many dealers have seen players who wear adult diapers in order to keep playing for as long as possible. (But for those of us who DON’T wear a diaper – Who’s REALLY gambling?)

DID YOU KNOW?
From the file marked: “Things you didn’t know you needed” comes this: Owners of 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-class vehicles might be able to whip off a TikTok video from inside their car, without even getting out their phones. That means dance moves could be possible using both hands, as long as the car is parked, according to Mercedes. Owners will also be able to participate in more on-brand activities, like business-related video meetings without having to open a laptop. Software in the car features a camera and enables the installation of apps like Zoom, Webex and TikTok without going through an intermediary like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. (Angry Birds, too?)

BS CHRONOMETER 02.28.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Tooth Fairy Day”, honoring the devious dental donor who leaves money under kids’ pillows for lost teeth. No one knows the origin for sure but there was a fairytale in 18th-century France about a ‘tooth mouse’ who hid under pillows. In 2022, parents….err…the Tooth Fairy left an average of $5.99 per tooth for kids in Canada. That means that for a full set of 20 baby teeth, kids are raking in about $120. (In the US, the average is $4.70.)
• “International Floral Design Day”, focusing on the art of flower arranging, both as a profession and as a hobby.
• “World Spay Day”, an annual campaign on the last Tuesday of February by the Humane Society to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats. LINK: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/spay_day
• “Rare Disease Day”, to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatment. A disease is defined as ‘rare’ in Europe when it affects less than 1-in-2000; and in the USA if it affects fewer than 200,000 in total.
• “Public Sleeping Day”, when you are encouraged to doze off in a public area, to draw attention to the fact that almost one-third of us sleep less than 6 hours a night. You may nap while riding on public transportation or on a bench in a park, at a library or a cafe, or any other public place. (Just don’t take off your shoes!)
• “International Repetitive Strain Injuries Awareness Day”, celebrated on Feb 29th in leap years (the only “non-repetitive” day of the year), and on the 28th in traditional years. While it takes a worker an average 47 days to recover from a broken bone, a worker suffering from an ‘RSI’, such as tendinitis or carpal tunnel syndrome, takes an average 52 days or 71 days, respectively.
