BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ A new police report says Jeremy Renner was trying to save his adult nephew from being hit by his snowplow when the machine accidentally crushed him. A Nevada sheriff’s office incident report reveals Renner didn’t activate the emergency brake as the machine started sliding sideways after he used it to pull his nephew’s truck out of snow. Police believe that “When Renner attempted to stop or divert (the machine) to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

★ Netflix is defending its reality series “Squid Game: The Challenge” after it may have become too close to the fictional source material — with players allegedly being stretchered away as the set turned into a frigid “warzone.” While in the UK secretly filming the much-awaited game show, based on the series, in which 456 contestants compete for a $4.5 million cash prize, temps dropped to 3°C (27° F) during shooting, reportedly resulting in players getting injured — although Netflix denies that, stating “While it was cold on set…participants were prepared for that – any claims of serious injury are untrue.”

★ After Paris Hilton shared she and husband Carter Reum recently welcomed their first baby, she received an outpouring of well wishes from family, friends and fans on social media. The couple welcomed their baby boy via surrogate. Lindsay Lohan, who became friends with the reality star in the early 2000s, was one the first stars to congratulate the new mom. Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian—another pal whose bond with Paris goes back years, wrote, “So happy for you guys!!!” The warm wishes didn’t stop there. Ashley Benson, Demi Lovato and Naomi Campbell were also among the stars who shared their excitement for the “Simple Life” star.

★ Madonna’s biopic is on the backburner. The film – which was set to star Julia Garner and be directed by the singer herself – is not moving forward, according to a source. The news comes a week after the ‘Material Girl’ singer announced plans for a career-spanning, globe-trotting tour, raising speculation about the project’s future. It has languished in development since 2020, when Madonna was set to direct and co-write the screenplay with Diablo Cody. Cody departed the project in 2021. No official comment from Madonna’s reps, or from Universal Films.

★ “That ’90s Show” hit the Netflix Top 10 for the week of January 16 — after only 3 days on the service. The “That ’70s Show” spinoff series brought in 41.1M hours viewed, coming in at #5 on the list of most-watched English-language series. “Ginny & Georgia” Season 2 is continuing to heat up the charts, staying at #1 with 87.4M hours viewed in its third week. Season 1 also stayed on the list, coming in 4th, after being pushed out of the #2 spot by “Vikings: Valhalla Season 2”.

★ Jennifer Coolidge continues her winning streak: The “White Lotus” star and recent Golden Globe Award winner has been named the recipient of Harvard-based Hasty Pudding Theatricals’ 2023 Woman of the Year Award. The Pudding called her “a truly unique and impactful presence in the world of entertainment.” The Woman of the Year Award is the Hasty Pudding Theatricals’ oldest honor, bestowed on performers who have made “lasting and impressive contributions to the world of entertainment.” The Woman of the Year event happens Feb. 4, when Coolidge will lead a parade through the streets of Harvard Square.

SHOOTING THE BULL

WORKS FOR ME:
So much for a “working vacation”. According to research out of the UK, working while you should be relaxing isn’t the “flex” you think it is – and over time, it can lead to decreased productivity – and even exhaustion. As reported in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, researchers conducted weekly surveys of 90 teachers over 2 months before, during and after their school’s winter break. What did they find? There are practically no benefits of vacation time when the employees insist upon working when they should be resting. This includes checking email, preparing or finishing work, or speaking to colleagues about work.
(They don’t mention it here, but it also includes looking after anything on the “honey-do” list, plus all types of housework. In fact, it turns out that golf is the only activity allowed while on vacation. So, if my wife asks…)
(On the other hand, they found that among those who treat their regular work time as if they were on vacation, while their productivity is nothing to write home about…they rarely suffer from exhaustion! So – Mojito Monday, anyone?)

GET YOUR ‘ASS-END’ DESCENDING:
Earlier this month, we found out that Monty Python’s famous “silly walk” is an ideal exercise for burning calories. Well, this isn’t quite as extreme, but Michael Mosely, a medical writer and former doctor, says that while you might think that running up a hill is better for you than jogging down it, or that climbing a flight of stairs challenges your muscles more than walking down, in fact, the opposite is true. This counter-intuitive approach is part of the new science of ‘eccentric exercise’. The name comes from the fact that contracting your muscles (to climb stairs or lift weights) is called ‘concentric exercise’, but any work that goes into those muscles while they are stretched out (like when you go downstairs or lower the weights) – that’s known as ‘eccentric exercise’ (pronounced ‘ee-centric’). It’s a rather long and complicated explanation, but after performing these exercises, your body burns more calories in the process of repair and recovery. That means an increase in metabolic rate…and it increases strength in a far more effective way than conventional exercises. Test subjects have also shown greater improvements in resting heart rate, insulin sensitivity and blood fat levels.
(And if you want a REALLY good workout, go to the top of a ski hill and try NOT to go down!)
(To be honest, I don’t do a lot of running up OR down hills. I do pump my own gas, though…!)

OVERTIME:
What would you do with an extra 4 hours each day? According to a poll, 60% of adults feel as though there isn’t enough time in a day to get everything done that they need to do. But what if they had more time? According to the survey of 2,000 Americans, one in 5 would focus on projects or tasks they enjoy, while 28% would tackle more projects — and bigger ones. 34% said they’d finish more chores, and 20% would use the time to get some extra sleep. And why do some people feel they need more sleep? Here are the things they said drain them of their energy the most:
• Cleaning (housework/chores) – 33%
• Preparing for events (holiday, visiting family, etc.) – 28%
• Job – 28%
• Financial responsibilities – 27%
• Climate change and other environmental concerns – 26%
• Taking care of my family – 24%
• Taking care of myself – 21%
• Traveling – 18%
• Politics – 17%
(Nothing in there about grocery shopping, huh?)
(I don’t know about you, but for me, with another 4 hours a day, there would have to be at least one more meal in there…)
(What would YOU do with an additional 4 hours each day?)

THE REASONS WE PROCRASTINATE:
Believe it or not, laziness isn’t the reason. These are the 4 types of procrastinators, says Jenny Yip, a clinical psychologist and executive director of the Los Angeles-based Little Thinkers Center (Which one are you?)
☞ The perfectionist and the worrier:  Both perfectionists and worriers might put off starting tasks due to a fear of failure or criticism. The perfectionist needs things done perfectly, so it takes a LOT of effort. And if they don’t have a plan, then the perfectionist will get lost. Worriers tend to be indecisive and dependent on others for advice or reassurance before taking initiative. (Yeah, that’s me. The perfectionist. Said no one to me ever!)
☞ The dreamer:  A “dreamer” procrastinator doesn’t like the nitty gritty logistical details often needed to get projects done. They like to come up with ideas, but it’s difficult or boring for them to execute these visions.
☞ The defier:  These people tend to view life in terms of what others expect or require them to do. This pessimism diminishes their motivation to complete tasks. It also can prevent them from discussing the matter with whomever gave them the assignment. (So, like, a teenager?)
While there are different methods of approaching each of these in an effort at combating procrastination, one catch-all helper is this, according to Yip: “Visualization works. If you can visualize yourself completing (a task), then it becomes more achievable simply because you have an idea that it can be done.”
(Also: Put your phone down!)
(One procrastinator they missed: The binge-streamer. Right, honey?)

DID YOU KNOW?

Billionaire Bill Gates has announced an investment in Australian start-up Rumin8, which is developing a seaweed-based feed to reduce the methane emissions cows produce through their burps and, to a lesser extent, when they pass wind. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, with 84 times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Nearly one-third of global methane emissions come from livestock — most of that from cows. (Maybe instead, Mr. Gates would like to invest a bit of money in keeping Windows 11 from burping and farting all over the place!)
