You’ve Got Yourself in Deep Sheet!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

Simon Cowell is hoping to have a charity single featuring an all-star cast of recording artists put together by today, a major project he committed to completing in just 48 hours (one of about a dozen songs in the works) . . . 29-year-old actor Channing Tatum (“GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra”) is using expertise gained from his previous job to develop a new movie based on – male strippers (and yes, he says he’ll be ‘getting his thong on’ again) . . . James Cameron’s “Avatar” is closing in on his epic “Titanic” as the top grossing film of all-time, with $1.662 billion in worldwide box office heading into this weekend (“Titanic’s” mark: $1,843 billion) . . . 34-year-old sorta actress Tara Reid is said to be thrilled her German millionaire boyfriend Michael Axtmann proposed this week (it’s been a long time since she’s earned “American Pie”-type money) . . . 46-year-old actor Johnny Depp tops the new “GQ” magazine ranking of ‘Most Stylish Men In the World’, beating out the likes of Brad Pitt, Jay-Z, and Robert Pattinson (it’s that hank of hair always flopping in his eyes that locked it down) . . . Famous person Paris Hilton is planning to boost her assets with a new line of cleavage-enhancing lingerie (don’t you first have to have one in order to enhance it?) . . . 57-year-old David Hasselhoff has announced his new A&E-TV reality show will document his business ventures and his role as a divorced father of 2 teenage daughters (sample dialogue: “Dad, why are you crawling around on the floor again?”) . . . And the ‘music career’ of reality TV star Heidi Montag (“The Hills”) has taken an embarrassing hit as her debut album, “Superficial”, has only sold a little over 1,000 copies in its first week, not even close to recouping the $2 million she spent making it (couldn’t happen to a nicer person).

PLUG-IN FERRY:

A Japanese shipbuilding company named IHI Marine United is developing a ship that will be powered entirely by rechargeable batteries. The hi-tech vessel will be able to travel 80 km (50 mi) while carrying 800 passengers. The ‘Zero Emission Electric Propulsion Ship’ will use batteries that can be recharged at charging stations in ports. Powered entirely by lithium-ion batteries, it would operate without a diesel engine, thus cutting carbon dioxide and/or nitrogen oxide emissions to zero. The company hopes to have a commercial version available in 2015. (They’re gonna need a long cord!)

WORLD’S EASIEST JOB?

The Holiday Inn hotel chain in Britain is offering ‘human bed warmers’ to help guests get a good night’s sleep. The walking electric blankets, who are dressed in special all-in-one sleeper suits, are sent to warm the beds of guests before they get under the covers. A spokesperson says it’s ‘like having a giant hot-water bottle in your bed’. The 5-minute free bed-warming service is being tried out in London and Manchester until the end of January. (They could charge extra if the ‘bed warmer’ stayed overnight.)

HOUSE HAWKING HINTS:
Many real-estate companies are now offering a service to ‘stage your house’, which involves tidying it up and decorating it so it has more appeal to potential buyers. To sell your house quicker, experts advise that before an open house you clear kitchen counters of all appliances, take everything off the refrigerator (including the dust), cut by half any knick-knacks on display, and hide toothbrushes, soap and other hygiene products. (Ask listeners what other tips they have, ie: baking fresh bread or hiding bowls of vanilla behind furniture.)

DID YOU KNOW?

• In olden days, pirates believed that piercing ears and wearing an earring improved eyesight.  This idea, scoffed at for centuries, has been re-evaluated in light of acupuncture theory. The piercing point actually does correspond to the auricular acupuncture point controlling eyesight.

• Wisconsin may soon have it’s own state … microbe. State Assembly Bill 556 aims to honor bacterium Lactococcus, the little guy that helps make milk turn into cheese. What else would you expect from a state where football fans show up with foam cheese wedges on their heads?

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .

• “Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day”, a day to concentrate on your feline and answer the questions you think it’s asking. People often consider cats unaffectionate, not true companions. But the truth is, they only talk to humans. Studies show they rarely ‘meow’ at other cats.
• “Celebration of Life Day”, a day to honor the gift of children and grandchildren.
• “Fun at Work Day”, because experts say when we enjoy our work, we are more productive.
• “International Clash Day”, when you’re supposed to put together the gaudiest outfit you can find, in order to relieve the Winter blahs.
• “St Vincent’s Day”, honoring the patron saint of wine growers. Tradition says: ‘Sunshine on St Vincent’s Day means the year’s wine will be more plentiful than water’. Let’s drink to that!
• “Speak Up & Succeed Day”. Tomorrow is ‘You’re Fired, You Loudmouth Troublemaker Day’.
• “Unification of Ukraine Day”, celebrating Ukraine’s formation in 1919. There are over 1 million people of Ukranian origin in Canada, making them the country’s 8th-largest ethnic group and giving Canada the world’s 3rd-largest Ukrainian population after Ukraine and Russia.

SATURDAY –
• “Handwriting Day”, a day set aside to recognize ‘graphology’ (handwriting analysis) and to encourage more legible handwriting.
• “Measure Your Feet Day”, a good excuse to conduct a poll to find the listener with the largest.
• “Pie Day”, celebrating the pie as an ‘art form’. Isn’t it better used as a weapon?
• “Snowplow Mailbox Hockey Day”, when snowplow drivers are encouraged to take out as many mailboxes as possible. High score wins! Hey, any excuse to have fewer bills delivered.
• “Spieling Day”, honoring that great pastime … blathering. Celebrants are encouraged to give long-winded speeches about meaningless subjects to family & co-workers. Gee, thanks.

SUNDAY –
• “Beer Can Appreciation Day”, observed on the anniversary of the 1st canned beer, marketed by Kruegar Brewing of Richmond VA on this day 75 years ago in 1935. Hmm, what should we do to celebrate? Admire the bottom of a can … from the inside?
• “Compliment Day”, a day to bolster someone else’s self-esteem. Go ahead, tell someone they’re not looking as fat and ugly as usual.
• “Direct Deposit Week”, which either has to do with having your pay directly deposited into your bank account … or making babies the ‘old fashioned way’.
• “Peanut Butter Day”, unless someone in the house is at risk of anaphylactic shock from an allergy. Originally called ‘nutmeal’, peanut butter has only been around for about 120 years but it’s a staple in 85% of homes and we eat about 3 lbs per person per year. If you have arachibutyrophobia, you’re afraid of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth!
