BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
[***UPDATE***] ★ David Lynch, the filmmaker celebrated for his uniquely dark vision in such movies as “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive” and the TV series “Twin Peaks,” has died just days before his 79th birthday. The cause of death and location were not immediately available, but Lynch had been public about his emphysema. The onetime artist broke through in the 1970s with the surreal “Eraserhead”. His other credits included “Wild at Heart” and “The Elephant Man”. And Bob Uecker, the legendary baseball broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers and former player, has died at 90. Uecker called games for the Brewers for 54 seasons, ending last year, and appeared in the 1989 movie “Major League” and its 2 sequels.

★ Conan O’Brien has been announced as the latest comedian to be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The former host of “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and “The Tonight Show” will receive the award on March 23 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The ceremony will air on Netflix. In typical Conan style, he offered this reaction to the news: “I am honored to be the first winner of the Mark Twain Prize recognized not for humor, but for my work as a riverboat pilot.” Kevin Hart was last year’s recipient, and previous honorees include Dave Chappelle, Adam Sandler, Jon Stewart, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
-Deadline
★ Wendy Williams broke down in tears while revealing that she’s “trapped” in her conservatorship on “The Breakfast Club” Thursday morning. The 60-year-old TV icon called into Charlamagne tha God’s radio show and talked about the court-ordered guardianship that has overseen her health and finances since 2022. She’s currently in a facility in New York. Williams, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia in 2023, insisted that she’s “not cognitively impaired,” adding, “Do I seem that way?” She said: “I feel like I’m in prison…I watch TV, listen to the radio and look out the window. Sit here as my life goes by.” Williams claimed to have just $15 and said her “cats are gone”. Her niece, Alex Finnie, was on the call, and defended Williams’ current mental state.

★ Lewis Hamilton and Sofía Vergara aren’t racing off into the sunset together. In fact, while the 2 recently enjoyed a lunch together in New York — where they were photographed smiling and laughing together — it turns out, there was nothing romantic about the Tuesday meet up. E! News quotes a source close to the situation saying: “This was a casual lunch with a big group of friends in a group setting, and by no means a date.” Vergara recently shared that her goals for 2025 include locking down a man.
-E!
★ Renée Zellweger said in an interview with her longtime “Bridget Jones” co-star Hugh Grant for British Vogue that it was the sound of her voice that led her to stop acting for more than half a decade in the 2010s. At that point in her career, Zellweger was already a 3-time Oscar nominee and one-time winner. She was one of the highest-paid female actors in Hollywood, but when asked by Grant why she took a 6-year acting break, Zellweger answered: “I was sick of the sound of my own voice. When I was working, I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, listen to you. Are you sad again, Renée? Oh, is this your mad voice?’ It was a regurgitation of the same emotional experiences.” At that time, she stayed busy by writing music and “studied international law.”
Variety
★ Betty White was NOT such a golden girl, according to Sally Struthers. Two years after White’s death, the “All in the Family” actress opened up about her negative experiences with the late actress, whom she called a “very passive aggressive woman.” Struthers claimed on the “Let’s Talk About That” podcast that White once “totally fat-shamed [her] in front of” other people while working on a pilot for a new game show. According to her, “I reached for a cookie and she said in front of everyone, ‘Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you, dear, you don’t need a cookie.’” Struthers, who noted “I know everybody loves her”, said she felt comfortable talking about White “now that she’s gone.”

POLLING STATION:
❑ A new survey says that less than half of Americans care which team wins the Super Bowl. Not only that, but the poll of 2,000 adults found that 1 in 4 are more interested in the food than the big game –and 54% agree that that the food spread can make or break the entire experience. The survey also found that the food is more important than the commercials – or the halftime show. (True. But it’s not as important as that huge bet I just placed downtown!)
❑ It’s a generational thing: Older adults are going to take younger ones to task because they ‘do things differently’. And it makes sense that so much of Gen Z’s lives are automated that they have some difficulty doing DIY things that older adults might feel are second nature. Still, the results of the survey might shock you: Researchers in the UK found that nearly 25% of Gen Z has no idea how to change a lightbulb in a ceiling lamp — with many claiming that climbing a ladder is “too dangerous.” One in 5 also expressed concern that the bulb might be “too hot.” In addition, the majority of team-Z’ers said they aren’t confident in their abilities to clean a car. And less than half said they don’t know how to add air to a tire. The report noted that instead of risking putting themselves in harm’s way to complete common tasks, Gen Zs tend to “GOTDIT” — Get Others To Do It. (Don’t laugh – just remember who you run to whenever you have a “techie” problem!)

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT GOING TO THE GYM:
So, how about those New Year’s resolutions? Or should I say…do you remember your New Year’s resolutions? With today being “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day”, here’s a friendly reminder that stats show 80% of people who made New Year’s resolutions have tapped out by the second week of January. But on the other hand, if your resolution was to…say…lose weight THIS YEAR, you’ve still got plenty of time to do it. Michael Hamlin is a personal trainer and founder of EverFlex Fitness. He points out that while a healthy diet is essential, you can help things along by incorporating these enjoyable methods of burning more calories without ever having to set foot in a gym . . .
1. Laugh more: Laughing for just 10-15 minutes a day can burn up to 40 calories. When you laugh, your body’s muscles contract and expand, which increases your heart rate and oxygen consumption. (You’d think just this fact alone would encourage SOMEONE in my family to laugh at my jokes!)
2. Park further away from your destination: Small habits add up. You could also try getting off the subway or bus a stop earlier than you need to. This will help you get extra steps in, and make feel invigorated when you arrive at work. (Especially with the way the weather has been lately!)
3. Walk after meals: Instead of sitting down, try lacing up your shoes for a brisk walk. It’ll lower the post-meal blood sugar spike, and help you use up that energy right away. (What post-meal energy?)
4. Do some chores: Vacuuming for 30 minutes can burn 99-166 calories, depending on your weight. Mowing the lawn for 30 minutes can burn up to 200 calories. (And shoveling snow? You could lose weight AND the feeling in your hands!)
5. Pace around the house: Take a stroll around your apartment, office or even around town if you arrive early to meet a friend. It helps get extra steps in, keeps body heat high, and can help keep joints in the lower extremities from stiffening.
6. Do some deep breathing: Believe it or not, taking 4-5 slow, deep breaths before you eat can have a significant impact on the body’s ability to burn calories versus storing them. (Not!)
7. Take cold showers: If you can handle it, do it. This causes the body to burn calories in order to generate heat and maintain your body’s core temperature. (I cannot begin to tell you how many times I’ve been told to do this – by my wife!)
8. Do calf raises while you cook: Simply stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and then move to your tippy-toes, and slowly lower yourself back down to the floor. (Every little bit helps. It also hurts…)
9. Get enough sleep: During sleep, the body goes into repair and recovery mode. It also equals better hormone function, making you less likely to overeat. (Unless you, like me, have perfected the fine art of “sleep-snacking”!)
10. Set a daily step goal on your smartwatch: Do this to remind yourself when it’s time to get up and walk throughout the day. Doing it a few times will add up to additional steps – and the burning of more calories. (Unless you walk to the donut store!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Ding Dong the dog earned his name through his creative approach to getting rescued. An animal rescue in St. Louis is caring for a dog that was saved from a dangerous cold snap — after he rang the doorbell of a home in a bid at finding warm refuge. Footage from Ding Dong’s rescue shows the young adult Akita mix sniffing around the porch of a home and activating the doorbell. The pooch is greeted by a friendly woman who offers treats. A spokesperson for the animal rescue said the woman “took Ding Dong inside, posted him on local Facebook groups looking for his owner and kept him safe.” After receiving no response, she brought the dog to the shelter, where he was given the name Ding Dong. (Apparently, he’s not a “Ding Dong” at all!)
➢ A pizza joint in England is willing to put the controversial topping pineapple on your order – but it’ll cost you. Lupa Pizza, a popular pizza purveyor in Norwich, is charging an extra £100 to anyone who orders it. That’s about $125 US. The hefty price tag for a Hawaiian pizza is listed on the its menu for the food delivery service website Deliveroo. It reads: “Yeah, for £100 you can have it. Order the champagne too! Go on you Monster!” Francis Woolf told a reporter: “I absolutely loathe pineapple on a pizza.” His head chef apparently agrees. He said: “I’d rather put a bloody strawberry on one than that tropical menace.” The owner said: “If someone does order the £100 pizza, of course, we will make it for them, but [we] believe that is a fair price for bad taste.” (Of course, if you’ve ever ordered pizza in Chicago, you’d know that price is about average…)

DID YOU KNOW?

A photo of a very unconventional snack has gone viral in Australia, sparking a wave of opinions and even judgement online. A man posted the image to Reddit, referring to the creation as a “fairy snag.” It consists of a sausage nestled inside a slice of fairy bread — much to the horror of those who believe that these Australian barbecue staples should be enjoyed separately. Fairy is a beloved treat down under, made with white bread slathered in butter, and topped with colorful sprinkles. In this case, it was adorned with a sausage and some sauce. The post amassed over 4,000 upvotes and more than 700 comments – including those calling it “a monstrosity,” and “offensive”. Another asked: “Is this legal?”
(Sure it’s legal – as long as you add ketchup!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/48ts58h3

• “Customer Service Day”, a great day to reflect on the most important asset of any business — customers. • “Bootleggers Day”, honoring the makers of ‘hooch’ throughout history. Why today? It’s the birthday of famed bootlegger Al Capone. Also, the US officially went “dry” with the start of prohibition on Jan. 17, 1920. (Also, because Templeton Rye Whiskey came up with this excuse for free promotion!)
• “Classy Day”. Taking place on the anniversary of the 1922 birth of actress and classy lady Betty White, the day is in honor of her “and all the women who bring their grace and gifts to their communities and the larger world.” White passed away Dec. 31, 2021, less than 3 weeks before her 100th birthday.
• “Benjamin Franklin Day”. Born on this date in 1706, he was a polymath – an expert on a variety of subjects. In addition to being one of America’s founding fathers, he was a prolific inventor, author, printer, politician, diplomat, musician, and postmaster. He also stopped attending school at the age of 10. (***See “BS Deep Thought”, below***)

• “Winnie the Pooh Day”, honoring the birthday of “Winnie-the-Pooh” author AA Milne (1882-1956) in London, England. (Please note: This is NOT an excuse to leave the house without wearing pants.)
• “Peking Duck Day”. Peking Duck (the national dish of China) is made with a specific breed of duck—the Imperial Peking. It is typically roasted in a brick oven, which causes the skin to become crispy. It can be eaten with pancakes, spring onions, and either hoisin sauce or sweet bean sauce.
