BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The 97th annual Oscar nominations were revealed Thursday morning, featuring a number of historic milestones. Among them: “Emilia Pérez”is not just the most-nominated film of the year, with 13 nods, it’s also the most-nominated non-English language film in Oscar history, topping the previous record of 10 by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Roma.” Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) is the second Black actress to be nominated twice for Best Actress in a Leading Role, after Viola Davis. Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) is the second performer nominated for playing Bob Dylan, after Cate Blanchett for 2007’s “I’m Not There.” And at 3:35, “The Brutalist” is the 6th-longest Best Picture nominee, a few minutes longer than 2 recent Martin Scorsese movies, “The Irishman” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Also up for the top prize are “Anora”, “A Complete Unknown”, “Conclave”, “Dune: Part Two”, “I’m Still Here”, “Nickel Boys”, “The Substance” and “Wicked”.

★ Marvel fans won’t be seeing Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘Doctor Strange’ anytime soon — but when the character does return, there will be a lot of him to go around. In a new cover story with Variety, he shares some juicy tidbits about the future of his wizard superhero. Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange played major roles in both “Infinity War” and “Endgame”, but says he’ll be sitting out the next Avengers flick, “Doomsday”, which was announced at last year’s San Diego Comic Con. But the hiatus won’t last long. Doomsday will be followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars”, and Cumberbatch says he will be “in a lot” of that one.

★ Ryan Gosling is headed to the great galaxy far, far away. The 3-time Oscar nominee is in talks to star in a new “Star Wars” feature film that’ll be directed by “Deadpool & Wolverine” filmmaker Shawn Levy. Details are scarce, but Jonathan Tropper, who collaborated with Levy on “The Adam Project”, has been working on a script for over a year. Levy is also producing, with Star Wars stewards Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm. According to sources, the project is meant to be a stand-alone movie.

★ “Duck Dynasty” is getting a reboot this year. Originally airing from 2012-17, it followed the lives of the Robertson family, who ran the successful business, Duck Commander. The new A&E show is called “Duck Dynasty: The Revival”, and it’ll follow Willie and Korie and their family of adult children and grandchildren, the next generation of Robertsons living on their family homestead in Louisiana. In a video announcing the show’s revival, Willie Robertson, his children and their spouses are all decked out in camo. As the camera pans to each one, he or she is taking a big stretch, a playful nod to the fact that it’s been a while since they’ve been “in action” in front of a camera. ★ George Lopez is retiring from stand-up comedy, but fans have one final special to look forward to. From Prime Video, “George Lopez: Muy Católico (Very Catholic)”, recorded last September at LA’s Dolby Theater, will premiere on February 18. In it, Lopez shares his reflections on aging, Latino family dynamics, and cultural quirks. He also embraces the challenges of getting older and touches on generational clashes and Latino superstitions.

WORD OF THE YEAR – KID STYLE:
In what has been a particularly turbulent week in global affairs, coming after a particularly turbulent year, the word “kindness” has been chosen as Oxford Children’s Word of the Year for 2024. And in an example of the eternal optimism of youth, the word was picked by children. More than 6,000 kids aged 6-14 were asked to select the word they think best summed up 2024 by the Oxford University Press (OUP). According to teachers, the choice of ‘kindness’, selected by 61% of them, reflects a growing awareness among young people of the impact of mental health, and the contribution kindness can make to mental wellbeing. Oxford defines kindness as “the quality or state of being kind; kind nature of disposition, or the demonstration of this in action or conduct.” But one child may have summed up the word even better, saying: “We should treat everyone with kindness. You never truly know how much it could help someone.”
(Yeah, 61% of kids picked kindness. The other 39%? Probably just needed a snack!)
(Maybe we should let kids run things. Clearly, they’ve got their priorities straight. Plus, then we’d get to eat Gummies for dinner!)

MONITORING YOUR MONITOR:
According to a new survey, “Shōgun” was the most-liked TV show of 2024. In a Talker Research poll of 2,000 adults in the US, 94% of those who watched the FX historical drama gave it a favorable rating – with 65% calling it “great”. “The Bear” – another FX show — did very well in the poll, with 92% of viewers of season 3 ranking it as ‘good’ or ‘great’. Also ranking right up there was “Landman”, with a 91% approval rating. The most-watched show among survey respondents was “Fallout,” Amazon Prime’s adaptation of the video game series, followed, in order, by “The Penguin”, “Dune: Prophecy”, season 2 of “House of the Dragon”, and season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power”.” The most watched movies of 2024, according to the survey, were, in order, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, “Deadpool & Wolverine”, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”, “A Quiet Place: Day One”, and “Twisters.”
(The moral of the story: Make sequels!)
(The thing I find most inspiring about these survey results is this: Not a reality show – or a crappy reality “competition show” among ‘em!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ An NHL goalie is blaming one of the shots that got past him in a tight game on a tray of cheesy nachos flew from the stands and onto the ice. Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson said that the snack tray distracted him from stopping a shot during a narrow victory over the Edmonton Oilers. He made the admission when he met with reporters after Tuesday’s game in Edmonton. The Capitals still managed to win 3-2, likely leaving Thompson a little less “salty” about the occurrence. Thompson took part of the blame himself, saying, “Obviously, I have to play to the whistle”, but he had “never seen that before.” (Distracted by nachos – the story of my life!)
➢ A plastic surgeon in Taiwan has gone viral after sharing a video showing him performing a vasectomy on himself – as a gift to his wife. Chen Wei-nong, a father of 3 who works at a plastic surgery clinic in Taipei, posted the clip on his Facebook and Instagram pages. The young doctor wanted to get a vasectomy, and to make sure there was no risk of botching the procedure, he decided to perform it himself, and recorded it, he said, “for educational purposes”. After presenting a list of 11 steps involved in the operation, Chen got local anesthesia and then started working on himself, so to speak. The procedure, which usually takes about 15 minutes, ended up taking an hour, but it was a success. The video amassed over 4 million views in a few days, and Chen assured commenters that he is a licensed surgeon. He also warned others not to follow his example, but to find a qualified urologist instead. (I’m pretty sure that when someone said: “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself”, this isn’t what they had in mind!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Recent research indicates that you may live longer if you eat oatmeal for breakfast. Among the benefits of regularly enjoying a bowl of the stuff each morning are: lower cholesterol levels and an improvement in blood sugar levels, which may decrease the chance of heart disease and diabetes. There is also evidence that oatmeal boosts the immune system, helps with digestion, and along with other healthy breakfast options, can help with brain function, especially memory and focus. A previous study linked regular oatmeal consumption to a decreased likelihood of premature death. (The only problem? They’re talking about the “no added sugar” kind – not the “we added a ton of brown sugar to make it edible” kind!)

BS CHRONOMETER 01.24.25

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Beer Can Appreciation Day”, observed on the anniversary of the first canned beer, marketed by Krueger Brewing of Richmond, Virginia on this day 90 years ago, in 1935. (Gee, what should we do to celebrate?)
• “Compliment Day”, when we’re encouraged to say something nice to at least 5 people. (Who will, in turn, ask, “OK, what is it that you want?”) Here are a few that you probably SHOULDN’T use…
– “It must take a lot of self-confidence to wear something like that.”
– “It’s nice to see success hasn’t gone to your head … just your mouth.”
– “It’s good you’re so optimistic about being successful. False hope is better than no hope at all.”
– “Glad to see you’re a person who understands there’s more to life than keeping the house clean.”
– “You look like a million … every year of it.”

“Global Belly Laugh Day”, a day to experience the health & happiness benefits of taking a moment to laugh out loud. To that end, we’re all encouraged to throw our arms in the air and laugh heartily at precisely 1:24pm local time.
• “Peanut Butter Day”, originally called ‘nutmeal’, peanut butter has only been around for about 130 years, but it’s a staple in 85% of homes — and we eat about 3 lbs (1.4kg) per person per year. (What’ll it be? Chunky, smooth or creamy? Or PB cookies?)
• “Just Do it Day”. There’s no time left for excuses. Today, pick a thing that you’ve been meaning to do but have been hesitant about — and just do it! (Why do I feel the urge to buy some Nikes?)
• “Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day”, a tongue-in-cheek salute to the beginning of the 1848 gold rush in California. (“Well, consarn it! A whole ’nuther year’s done skedaddled right past an’ we’re celerbatin’ this agin!”)

SATURDAY:
• “Robbie Burns Day”, party time for Scots everywhere! Honoring Scotland’s national poet, who was born January 25, 1759, and whose most famous composition was ‘Auld Lang Syne’. A traditional “Burns Supper” includes cock-a-leekie soup (fowl, leeks, and herbs), haggis (minced sheep’s heart, lungs, and liver mixed with oatmeal), and neeps and tatties (mashed turnip and potatoes). The meal is then washed down with Scotch whisky toasts. (***See “Scots or Not?”, below***)
• “Intravenous Nurse Day”, saluting nurses whose main ambition in life is finding a good vein in patients’ forearms in which to insert a needle. In fact, medical insiders will tell you nurses often ogle and discuss the veins of unsuspecting people in public places. This is known as “nurse porn”.
• “Irish Coffee Day”. A delicious cocktail made with black coffee, sugar, Irish whiskey, and whipped cream. Joe Sheridan, a bartender at Foynes Airbase in Ireland, invented the concoction in 1942 as replenishment after a miserably cold 18-hour journey across the Atlantic.
• “Opposite Day”, a day to do everything backwards (eat wrong-handed, say the opposite of what you mean, etc.) as a fun way to get out of your tedious, day-in, day-out, lackluster, humdrum, milquetoast, run-of-the-mill rut. (I’m wearing my socks on the wrong feet!)
• “A Room of One’s Own Day”. English author Virginia Woolf was born on this date in 1882. An intellectual and a feminist, her works saw a resurgence during the feminist movement of the 1970s, and she’s still influential today. This day is named for her essay: A Room of One’s Own”, and celebrates having your own room or space to create, write, and follow intellectual pursuits.
“Fish Taco Day”, celebrating the culinary delight known as “tacos de pescado” in Spanish, which traces its roots to the Mexican state of Baja California. The traditional fish taco consists of grilled or fried fish, nestled in a soft corn tortilla, garnished with toppings like cabbage, pico de gallo, and a tangy mayo-based sauce.

SUNDAY:
• “Australia Day”, the national day for our mates Down Under, commemorating the 1788 landing of Captain Arthur Phillip at Sydney to establish a penal colony. Records of an annual celebration date back to 1808. (FUN FALSE FACT: Australia’s biggest export is boomerangs. It’s also their biggest import!)
• “Peanut Brittle Day”, celebrating the yummy treat that sticks to your fillings. A little sugar, a little corn syrup, a little more sugar, some peanuts, a little butter, a little more sugar …
• “Spouse’s Day”, a time to enjoy and appreciate your better half. (Just before you deposit this month’s alimony…)
• “International Customs Day”, recognizing the role of customs officials and agencies in maintaining border security. It focuses on the working conditions and challenges that customs officers face on-the-job. (To celebrate, body-frisk a co-worker today. Just kidding!)
• “Green Juice Day”, to encourage people to stick to their health and wellness resolutions by drinking a green juice and staying healthy. (Why do I have the feeling this is going to involve kale?)
• “Lotus 1-2-3 Day”, marking the anniversary of the day in 1983 when the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program, which was a 3-in-1 spreadsheet calculator, database manager, and graphics package, debuted as an application for the IBM PC.
• “Child Labor Day”, highlighting the problem of Third World children forced into the workforce. UNICEF defines child labor as work that harms “the physical and mental development of children and adolescents and interferes with their education.”

BULL’S BITS

BS WHACK FACTS:
✓ Night insects (like moths) are attracted to lights because they used the light of the moon to navigate before artificial lights were made.
✓ It may sound like gibberish, but the Minions of the “Despicable Me” movies speak an actual language created by the producers, combining Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Filipino (Tagalog), French and Russian — to create “Minionese”.
✓ Carnivores dream more than herbivores.
✓ A full jumbo jet tank has enough fuel to drive a car around the world 4 times.
✓ Tic Tacs got their name from the sound they make.
✓ In 2013, the first artificially created human tooth was created in China — using stem cells extracted from human urine.

BS FAKE ‘DRY JANUARY’ FACTS:

• If you want to participate, there’s a 3-drink minimum.
• If you thought January lasted forever BEFORE, now, it’ll just fly by…
• Non-alcoholic beer and mocktails are perfectly sufficient as substitutes.
• You are allowed to enjoy dry gin, dry cider, or a dry martini.
• If it rains during Dry January, you have to start all over again. Some years, it lasts ‘til August.
• People really enjoy listening to you explain why you’re taking part.
• It would be even harder if it didn’t ‘pause’ every night at 8pm.
• It’s fun.
• I also won’t be drinking on Feb. 1st.

This is ‘Skiing & Snowboarding Week’, so here’s a look at …
BS REASONS SNOWBOARDING IS BETTER THAN SKIING:
• Only one piece of equipment to chase down the hill.
• There’s no way to ‘snowplow’ down a bunny hill, so you won’t look like a total loser.
• A snowboard can’t go two ways at the same time.
• Snowboarders just look cooler … at least until they’re totally immobile in a full body cast.
• No chance of impaling yourself on a pole.
• Cheaper equipment … just bust the wheels off your skateboard.
