BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ This morning (5:18 am PST) Oscar-winners Brie Larson (“Room”) and Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”) are among those who announce nominees in 24 categories for this year’s Academy Awards. In a departure from previous years, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences is ditching a live audience for the announcements and will live-stream them on its website, Oscars.org. Some of the presentation also airs on ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America”. Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the 2017 Oscars on February 26th.

★ Millie Bobby Brown is the face of a new Calvin Klein ad campaign. The 12-year-old actress shot to fame after being cast as the lead in Netflix’s smash hit series “Stranger Things”. The part of ‘Eleven’, a child with extreme supernatural powers, required her to shave her hair off, and her short ‘do has now become a signature look. Uploading one of the fashion images to her Instagram account, Millie tells her 2.5 million followers she’s “so honored to be a part of this”.

★ And moviegoers who want to see “A Dog’s Purpose” will be greeted by animal rights activists. PETA organizers say they have plans to protest in front of many theaters. As you know, the controversy erupted after a video was posted of a German Shepherd in distress when a handler tried to pull it into rushing water. Producers say the dog was treated humanely throughout the filming, but got freaked out because the point of entry was changed. The studio cancelled the Hollywood premiere and press junkets, but the movie is supposed to open Friday anyway.

TIMMYS TO GO:
Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Tim Hortons and Burger King plans to launch an app Canada-wide this Spring that allows customers to order and pay in advance on their smartphones without lining up to pay a cashier. The move by RBI follows a similar one by Starbucks and is the latest push towards more automation in the food service industry. Since late December, the Brewster App has undergone testing in 25 Tim Hortons cafés in Ontario and 25 Burger King restaurants in Miami FL. The expansion would see the app rolled out to the roughly 4,000 Tim Hortons and Burger King locations across Canada. (Just one more way your phone’s going to get you in financial trouble.)

HOW TO SAY NO AT WORK:
Staying productive is all about consciously deciding what NOT to do. Here are 5 ways to say ‘no’ so you can reclaim your focus …
1. Make a ‘Stop-Doing List’ – The idea is to identify a short-list of habits you want to avoid, ie: scheduling meetings first thing in the morning, treating emails from strangers as urgent, etc.
2. Write Tomorrow’s ‘To-Do’ List Today – You can hit the ground running if you close out your workday by jotting down in advance a to-do list for the day ahead.
3. ‘Batch’ Your Email Time – Productive emailers (‘batchers’) set aside a few time slots each day to power through their inboxes, and say ‘no’ to email interruptions outside those times.
4. Teach People to Expect You’ll Say ‘No’ – Once you level the playing field between the possibility of saying ‘yes’ and saying ‘no’, it becomes easier to gracefully decline.
5. Swap “I Can’t Do That” With “I Don’t Do That” – When you say you “can’t do” something, it may convey weakness and inadequacy. “Don’t”, however, conveys power and conviction.

WE ALL DO IT:
Almost everyone has done it at one time or another, mixed up the names of family members or friends, even the family dog. A new study of these cognitive glitches by Rollins College in Florida finds the goof-ups often come down to the way the human brain catalogues names. We essentially shelve them away in folders based on how well we know and/or love people. When we mess up a name, it’s typically because we inadvertently choose a different one from the same folder. 95% of the time a name mixup occurs, it’s between family members. And moms, the research shows, seem especially prone to doing it. Interestingly, the study also finds that the names of people’s pet dogs get thrown into the ‘I-love-you-like-family’ folder, but not their cats or other pets. (This may explain why your mom has called you by the dog’s name so many times. “Does ‘Nippers’ want her breakfast?”)

PMS LINKED TO CATS:
Severe PMS has been linked to a parasite carried by cats. Scientists at Juarez University in Mexico have found that women with bad premenstrual symptoms – such as anger and depression – are more likely to have the parasite in their bloodstream. The organism has previously been linked with anxiety, schizophrenia, and aggression. You can catch the bug (toxoplasma gondii) simply by handling cat litter. It’s important to note that we’re talking severe PMS – or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder – rather than just feeling a little low before your time of the month. Far from gentle mood swings, PDD can cause extreme anger and anxiety, low self esteem, persistent depression, and trouble sleeping. (If you have any of these problems, see your vet.)
