★ The results of the judging at the Sundance Film Festival were announced Saturday night. 28-year-old writer-director Damien Chezelle won the drama competition for his film “Whiplash”, which follows a jazz drummer attempting to perfect his music. The documentary prize went to Tracy Droz Tragos & Andrew Droz Palermo for “Rich Hill”, a film about 3 adolescents struggling to escape poverty in the town of Rich Hill, Missouri.

• The Beatles – Tonight a 2-hour TV special is being taped, celebrating the legacy of the Fab Four’s famous debut performance on the old “Ed Sullivan Show”. The event is being shot at the LA Convention Center, taking advantage of the many artists in town for last night’s Grammy Awards. “The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles” airs on CBS-TV February 9th, exactly 50 years after the original event.
• Billy Joel – Tonight his Madison Square Garden residency begins in NYC. He’s announced he’ll perform once-a-month at the venue for as long as the fans will have him. Ensuing shows are already booked for February 3rd, March 21st, and April 28th. He’ll also perform on his 65th birthday, May 9th.
• Courtney Love – She has been found not guilty of libeling her former attorney. After a week-long trial in LA, she emerged victorious on Friday afternoon after a jury ruled in her favor. She was accused of libeling lawyer Rhonda Holmes in a 2010 tweet.
• Justin Bieber – Who was the blonde riding alongside the Biebs in his yellow Lamborghini in Miami FL? Her name is Chantel Jeffries, a self-described model and selfie snapper. The twosome were spotted over the weekend vacationing (hiding out?) in Punta Chame, Panama.
• Kanye West – Fiancée Kim Kardashian tells Jimmy Kimmel they’ll wed this Summer, hopefully in Paris, as it’s their 2nd home where they have an apartment. And according to UK tabloid “The Sun”, the pair are looking to hire Lady Gaga as entertainment at their wedding reception.
• Katy Perry – Due to overwhelming demand, 12 additional shows have been added to her “Prismatic World Tour”, including 2nd shows for Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Edmonton, LA, Toronto, and Washington DC. The North American leg begins June 22nd in Raleigh NC.
• Mariah Carey – The self-obsessed singer and hubby Nick Cannon (“America’s Got Talent”) are said to be writing a kids book starring – who else? – their twins Monroe & Moroccan.
• Sara Bareilles – The 34-year-old says she had a ‘mid-life crisis’ in 2013 and made a number of life-changing decisions. She took a new direction with her music, left LA after 14 years and moved to NYC, and also ditched a long-term relationship.
• Sugarland – Jennifer Nettles tops this week’s ‘Billboard Country Albums’ chart with her new solo project “That Girl”. The album also ranks 5th on the all-genre album chart.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN TRAVEL IN 2014:
A quick peek at what’s on the traveling horizon in the near future …
• More, and flashier, cruise ships. The coming months will see the debut of at least 6 new major vessels.
• Self-service car rentals. Hertz, most prominently, will soon be replacing agents with faster self-service kiosks.
• Your phone as your hotel key. The Aloft chain recently announced it would have this technology ready in 2014. It already allows guests to check in by text message.
• Swanky independent airport lounges. American Express, for example, has launched ‘Centurion Lounges’, free for use by its Platinum card members.
• Goodbye, room service. NYC’s largest hotel, the New York Hilton, has already ditched it in favor of a food marketplace in the lobby. Room service just isn’t a money-maker for hotels.
• More alternatives to hotels. Short-term apartment rental websites like FlipKey, Homeaway, and Rentalo are flourishing. AirBnB has 50,000 units on offer, more than any single hotel chain.
