BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Jamie Foxx is back in action. He was spotted with co-star Cameron Diaz on the Atlanta set of their upcoming movie, “Back in Action,” on Saturday. It was Foxx’s first time being seen at work since he experienced a health emergency last April. The two appeared to be in a chipper mood, and were pictured walking outside together in casual clothing. When Foxx was hospitalized, it was unclear if he had more scenes to shoot for the action-comedy.

★ Charlie Sheen’s neighbor has received a 2-year probation and been ordered to undergo treatment for substance abuse after attacking the actor at his home. 48-year-old Electra Schrock pleaded no contest to a charge of felony assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury in Van Nuys Superior Court on Friday. On Dec. 20, Schrock allegedly “forced her way” into the “Two and a Half Men” star’s house in Malibu, and attempted to strangle him. Schrock is also barred from contacting Sheen.

★ The box office has officially entered the January doldrums. The weekend’s only new wide opener, the outer space thriller “I.S.S.,” failed to make impact, with a $1.2 million opening day, and an estimated weekend haul of $3.3 million. “Mean Girls” continues its reign as queen bee of the box office, earning a projected $11 million. In second place, “The Beekeeper” combed together about $8.4 million over the weekend, and in third place was “Wonka”, with an estimated $6.7 million in its sixth weekend of release.

★ Friday, Alec Baldwin was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter, as prosecutors once again seek to hold him accountable for the on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin was initially charged in January 2023, but the charges were dropped 3 months later, after his defense team raised questions about whether the gun was functioning properly when it fired. If convicted, Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison.

★ Sofia Vergara and Netflix have been hit by a lawsuit by Griselda Blanco’s estate over the upcoming series “Griselda.” The suit seeks a court injunction to block the release of the miniseries, which is scheduled to premiere this Thursday, due to alleged unauthorized use of the family’s image and likeness. The series, which stars Vergara, follows the infamous cartel leader known as “the Godmother” as she rises through drug trafficking ranks in 1980s Miami. Vergara also serves as an executive producer.

SHOOTING THE BULL
LOCK CHECK:
If you’re one of those people who is always worrying about whether you remembered to lock the front door when you left, then this new product is for you. Created by Japanese lock manufacturer Miwa, the “ChecKEY” is a sleeve-like accessory that goes over the top part of your key and features a small window that indicates whether you locked your door or not. The ChecKEY comes with a built-in mechanism that detects when you turn the key clockwise or counterclockwise — and changes color accordingly. When you turn the key clockwise, the little window on the ChecKEY turns white, and when you turn it counterclockwise, it turns orange. The mechanism is entirely mechanical, so it doesn’t require a battery. And any time you want to check to see if you locked your home, you simply look at your key. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/yffksdhc
(…and if you’re one of those people who NEVER gives another thought to whether you locked the house or not, I envy you!)
(No thanks. I’ll wait until they unnecessarily over-complicate it, and make you hook your lock up to your wi-fi, download an app, and pay for a monthly subscription. THEN I’ll get it!)
(…unfortunately, what it DOESN’T tell you is whether your kid locked the door when he left after you did!)

TECH TALK:
❑ Researchers from the University of Basel and the Technical University of Munich are challenging previous assumptions about the impact on sleep of blue light emanating from our devices. Their findings are that the color of light might not significantly affect the human internal clock and sleep quality, contradicting prior research. The study results also cast doubt upon the common practice of using night mode on smartphones and tablets. Night mode often involves a yellowish color adjustment, which according to these study results, would be irrelevant. (I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I can fall asleep with a handful of sloppy nachos, in the middle of a movie, while watching TikToks on my phone. It seems to bother the other people at the theater, though!)
❑ It has been long-reported that spending excessive amounts of time online or on your phone is linked to lower levels of mental health and dissatisfaction in relationships. But a new Canadian report says there is a “sweet spot” regarding how long you can use digital technology without causing much of an impact. StatsCan found that people who spend less than 10 hours weekly watching online content report having very good or excellent mental health at a rate of 16% higher than those who watch content for 20 or more hours per week. It was also found that those who take a “break” from the internet are much more likely to report very good mental heath. (Why is it, then, that when the internet goes down (forcing me to take a “break” from the internet, I feel like I’m gonna blow a gasket?)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A Vancouver Island woman was heading home one night in Courtenay when she stumbled on an envelope stuffed with cash, frozen in the snow. Talia Ball said she “just saw like a $100 bill in the snow, so I thought like maybe somebody just dropped one — (but) it was like a big stack of cash.” It had the word ‘kids’ written on it, so she knew it was important to a family somewhere. Ball turned to social media, posting a message about the discovery, which spread like wildfire. She withheld the exact amount of cash, and other details, to ensure she would find the rightful owner. And it wasn’t long before someone who knew the family who lost the money connected them with the post. Ball said that when the owner came by, he told her that his wife “cried when she found out someone had actually turned it in.” She was given a $50 reward for her honesty.
➢ Supporters of a hockey team in Hershey PA came out in full force to break a world record. Every year, fans gather for the Hershey Bears Teddy Bear Toss, where they throw stuffed animals down to the ice. The plush toys are then donated to local charities. Early this month, the toss took place during the Bears’ match against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and after a Bears player scored in the second period, stuffed animals began to rain down. Bears Captain Dylan McIlrath said it was “incredible” to see. The Bears announced that for 2024, a world record 74,599 stuffed animals were tossed. Since the first event in 2001, nearly 390,000 stuffed animals have been collected. (We’re just thankful the “Sabres” have never tried this promotion!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Gamers are particularly at risk of going deaf or developing tinnitus because of excessively loud sound levels on their gaming consoles, researchers warn. A study by the World Health Organization and South Carolina University found that sound levels coming from gaming consoles can spike to short bursts of 119 decibels, equivalent to the noise of a bulldozer or motorbike. Prolonged exposure to anything over 85 decibels can lead to hearing loss or tinnitus.

BS CHRONOMETER 01.22.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day”, a day to concentrate on your feline and answer the questions you think it’s asking. People often consider cats unaffectionate, but the truth is, they only talk to humans. Studies show they rarely ‘meow’ at other cats.
• “Celebration of Life Day”, a day to honor the gift of children and grandchildren. (Because having “a 2-year-old is kind of like having a blender, but you don’t have a top for it.” — Jerry Seinfeld)
• “Hot Sauce Day”. If you’re one of those people who feels that “spicy” is never quite spicy enough, Hot Sauce Day is the day for you! It is used in Bloody Marys, and put on foods such as eggs, enchiladas, and chicken wings. There are many variations and brands, but the one thing common to all hot sauce is the presence of chili peppers.
• “Southern Food Day”, dedicated to celebrating the rich culinary tradition of the Southern US. Southern cuisine is known for comfort food, characterized by hearty flavors, locally sourced ingredients, and a blend of cultural influences. From fried chicken, barbecue, and catfish, to grits, collard greens, and biscuits… (Sorry my mouth started watering there, and I lost my train of thought!)
• “Polka Dot Day”. This day celebrates Disney’s most esteemed fashionista — ‘Minnie Mouse’. Minnie is not only Mickey Mouse’s beloved counterpart, but is a sassy and sweet pop culture icon who popularized the polka dot pattern.
• “Roe vs. Wade Day”, the day that changed everything. This date in 1973, the Supreme Court announced its decision that the constitutional right to privacy includes a right to abortion. 51 years later, Roe vs. Wade Day is celebrated as a historical moment in women’s rights.
• “Better Business Communication Day”, to help companies get on a path to implementing solid communication practices. By encouraging better communication in the workplace, employees feel connected and empowered, which leads to better decision making. (So hit “reply all” on all the emails you receive today!)
• “Blonde Brownie Day”, the blonde brownie uses vanilla and brown sugar as ingredients in place of the chocolate or cocoa of traditional chocolate brownies. Also known as “blondies”.
