BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
TV network Oxygen has nabbed the syndication rights to “Glee” for reruns beginning in 2013, and the net is also developing a companion reality TV series (thereby beating what was a fresh concept deep into the ground) . . . Now we know why Lindsay Lohan’s 2007 DUI case may have been plea-bargained so quickly, TMZ reporting the cop who took custody of the cocaine found in her vehicle mistook it for a breath mint and threw it in the trash (powdered breath mints?) . . . More probs on the set of NBC-TV’s “The Office” as actress Angela Kinsey (‘Angela’) has split from husband Warren Lieberstein – who just happens to be one of the show’s writer/producers (awkward!) . . . Details about Sandra Bullock’s divorce continue to trickle in, including the fact she still plans to co-parent ex-hubby Jesse Jame’s kids (how long before she qualifies for sainthood?) . . . 25-year-old Ali Fedotowsky, the current mate-seeker on “The Bachelorette” (ABC), reportedly gets engaged on the August 2nd finalé (have these people learned nothing?) . . . Britney Spears’ former bodyguard Fernando Flores, who quit due to her alleged erratic behavior, has told LA’s Department of Children & Family Services she’s too unstable to raise her sons (she’s denying charges she beat one with a belt and gave both food they were allergic to) . . . French film hit “Amelie” tops a new “American Cinematographer” magazine poll of more than 17,000 film fans as the best film made between 1998 and 2008 (it’s a must-see, even with the subtitles) . . . And the new movie trailer for horror movie sequel “Paranormal 2” has been pulled from cinemas in Texas because of complaints it’s – too scary (uh, isn’t that the idea?).

COMING ATTRACTIONS:
A BS selection of movies in the making …
• “Captain America: The First Avenger” – Tommy Lee Jones has joined the cast of this Marvel comics superhero movie in the role of ‘Colonel Chester Phillips’, who recruits one ‘Steve Rogers’ to join an experimental project that leads to the creation of the ‘Super Soldier’. Chris Evans has the title role as ‘Rogers/Captain America’. The flick’s due for release in July 2011.
• “Footloose” – Julianne Hough has kept her role as ‘Ariel’ in the at-times-troubled remake of the 1984 film. The new version is expected April 2011. Newcomer Kenny Wormald, a former dancer on Justin Timberlake’s tour, has been cast as ‘Ren’, the lead character originally played by Kevin Bacon. Dennis Quaid will portray Ariel’s party-pooper pop ‘Reverend Moore’.
• “Mad Max: Fury Road” – The upcoming 4th film in the series is designed to be ‘a relaunch, a revisit, and an entire restructuring’ of the cult sci-fi series. 32-year-old Brit actor Tom Hardy takes over as ‘Max Rockatansky’, the role that made Mel Gibson a star when he played it in 3 films from 1979-85. Charlize Theron is signed to co-star. The film’s due out in 2012.
• “Sherlock Holmes 2” – Director Guy Ritchie is working on a script that will take full advantage of the sleuth sequel being filmed in 3-D. It is also thought he’s hiring some of the crew that worked on James Cameron’s “Avatar” to oversee the 3-D effects. The as-yet-untitled sequel is expected in 2011.
CONSUMER WORKOUT:
The average woman burns off 48,000 calories a year … shopping. A recent study reveals that women make about 132 shopping trips per year. That works out to an annual total of 159 hours and 56 minutes of walking at a fast pace. Men don’t seem to experience the same calorie-burning benefit because … they don’t shop as much. (Thanks to online shopping, my fingers are in great shape!)
– “Daily Mail”
BODY BUGS:
The average human body hosts up to 35,000 different species of bacteria. In fact, bacterial cells outnumber human cells by 10 times. Most reside in just 3 places, the most populated being the intestines, where well over 5,000 species can be found. Next up is the mouth, home to a few hundred types; and finally, about 100 species of bacteria reside on our skin. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of these are not harmful to humans. (Eww, did you just get itchy?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Because it is considered bad luck if a bottle of champagne fails to break when launching a ship, the bottle is often scored to maximize its chances of smashing. Experts say you should also use a brand of champagne with big bubbles. The larger the bubbles, the higher the pressure inside the bottle. Oh, and give the bottle a shake first.

BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “I Forgot Day”, set aside to make up for all the birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions that you forgot to acknowledge over the past year. (What’s the lamest excuse anyone ever laid on you?)
• “International Chicken Wing Day”, celebrating the tasty chicken tidbits that used to be tossed out. The idea of drenching fried wings in hot sauce is said to have hatched in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo NY when unexpected guests showed up. The “Great International Chicken Wing Society Cookoff” begins today in Reno, Nevada.
• “Roswell UFO Festival”, through Monday in Roswell NM, a celebration inspired by the infamous day in 1947 when a UFO purportedly crashed on a local ranch and launched an entire industry of UFO/military conspiracies. Events include a ‘UFO Parade’, ‘Alien Pet Costume Contest’, and appearances by Marvel Comics characters and actor Wes Studi from “Avatar”. By the way, thanks to that incident 63 years ago, today is observed as “World UFO Day”.

• “World Wife Carrying Championships”, the 18th annual 2-day event in Sonkajarvi, Finland in which men from around-the-world tote their wives (or a female friend) around an 830-ft (250-m) obstacle course in hope of winning her weight in beer. The current record is 55.5 seconds.

SATURDAY –
• “Compliment Your Mirror Day”. Participation consists of complimenting your mirror on having such a wonderful owner and keeping track of whether other mirrors you meet during the day smile at you. (This is much more fun if you have a prescription for medicinal marijuana.)
• “Dog Days of Summer” through August 11th, traditionally the hottest time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The name comes from the ancients, who would sacrifice a brown dog at this time to appease Sirius, the Dog Star, believing that star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather. “Air Conditioning Appreciation Days” run simultaneously to celebrate the contribution of AC to a better way of life (and a really high electricity bill). Today is also “Stay Out Of the Sun Day” (unless you’re working on a melanoma collection).
• “Tour de France”, the 97th annual staging of the world’s premiere cycle race through July 25th, covering a distance of 3,642 km or 2,263 mi throughout France. American Lance Armstrong has announced it will be his final race. He’s won a record 7 consecutive times (1999-2005).
NET: http://www.letour.fr/indexus.html
SUNDAY –
• “Barbecue Day”, celebrating the time-honored tradition of roasting flesh over an open flame. Interestingly, ‘barbecue’ in Canada is either the implement (“It’s time you cleaned that caked-on grease off the barbecue”) or the process (“I’m gonna barbecue some venison steaks, thanks to Uncle Gordie bagging that buck last fall”). But in the US, ‘barbecue’ more often refers to the food (“Hoo-ey! Smoky Joe serves up the most lip-smackin’ barbecue!”).
• “Country Music Day”, celebrating the roots music movement that began in America some 80 years ago with the advent of the Carter Family & Jimmie Rodgers. Country is actually a mishmash of several other music styles, including traditional folk, Celtic, blues, gospel, hokum, and old-time music. (How come there aren’t any ‘All Hokum, All the Time’ radio stations?)
• “Independence Day” in the USA. Among the more unusual “4th of July” festivals: “International Cherry Pit Spitting Contest” in Eau Claire MI; “World’s Greatest Lizard Race” in Lovington NM; and the annual “Sidewalk Egg-Frying Challenge” in Oatman AZ. It’s also the excuse for the annual vegan observance “Independence From Meat Day”.
• “International Drive Your Studebaker Day”, honoring the innovative vehicle manufacturer that went defunct in 1967. If you’re old enough to remember the car, you’re likely too old to drive.
• “Pride Week” in Toronto culminates with the 30th edition of the famous ‘Pride Parade’, Canada’s largest gay & lesbian pride event,
NET: http://www.pridetoronto.com/
• “Queen’s Plate”, the 151st running of the first jewel in the Canadian ‘Triple Crown’ of horse racing, at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack. Queen Elizabeth II is this year’s guest of honor.
