BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Conor McGregor and his manager Audie Attar have provided an update after the fighter underwent surgery to repair broken leg bones suffered in Saturday’s UFC 264 loss to Dustin Poirier. Attar tweeted out details of the operation,  saying: “The surgery was successful repairing fractures of his tibia and fibula. Both doctors are confident that with time he will make a full recovery. We anticipate his return to the Octagon.” McGregor, meanwhile, tweeted that “Surgery went excellent!” and that he is “Feeling tremendous!”, before calling Poirer’s victory by TKO “illegitimate”.

★ “Basic Instinct” director Paul Verhoeven has responded to Sharon Stone’s claim she was tricked into removing her underwear for the 1992 film’s infamous leg-crossing interrogation scene. He said Stone “knew exactly what we were doing,” when they filmed the scene. Quote: “I told her it was based on a story of a woman that I knew when I was a student who did the crossing of her legs without panties regularly at parties. Then Sharon and I decided to do a similar sequence.” Stone wrote in her book that she was directed to remove her underwear for the film’s famous scene under the pretense it would not be visible on film.

★ Bill Cosby is plotting a comedy tour on the heels of his prison release, and his camp says several promoters and comedy clubs are interested — but the famed Comedy Cellar in NYC’s Greenwich Village is definitely NOT. Owner Noam Dworman says his venue is not the slightest bit interested, and Cosby isn’t even welcome to step foot inside his club. The Comedy Cellar is known for allowing comics and content that make audiences super uncomfortable, but apparently even it has limits.

★ Ricky Gervais is no stranger to stirring up controversy, and he’s at it again. In a recent interview to mark the 20th anniversary of the original U.K. version of “The Office,”  he offered his opinion on how the groundbreaking comedy would fare against cancel culture. The star and creator of the series said: “Now it would be cancelled. Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I say, ‘Good, let them cancel it. I’ve been paid!'” Following the interview, Gervais clarified on Twitter that he was joking.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Drake, Bruno Mars, Bob Dylan, and SZA – are all featured on Barack Obama’s summer playlist. Obama wrote on Twitter: “It’s a mix of old and new, household names and emerging artists, and a whole lot in between.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/9ha2de73
• Dua Lipa – is being sued for posting a paparazzi shot of herself on her social media. Integral Images wants $150,000 in damages after they say Lipa used a February 2019 photo taken by an Integral photographer in a now-deleted Instagram post.
• Scooter Braun – The manager of Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, among others, is separating from his wife, businesswoman Yael Cohen, after 7 years of marriage, but a source says they may still work things out. • Triumph – Their long-awaited documentary will be released this fall – in Canada at least. Bassist Mike Levine says they are still working out international release details for “Triumph: Lay It On The Line”, but he expects it will be available elsewhere by the first quarter of 2022, at the latest.
• Velvet Underground — Filmmaker Todd Haynes says he hopes to reach a new generation of fans with a documentary on the group, which includes scenes shot by Andy Warhol capturing New York in the 1960s. “The Velvet Underground”, presented at Cannes, will be released on Apple TV+ in October.
• Neil Diamond – His classic ‘Sweet Caroline’ became the fight song of the England national football team throughout their improbable UEFA Euro 2020 finals run. If they had won the championship, music licensing expert Bridget Bloom of 401K Music figures the song would have earned Diamond an estimated $10 million in royalties from advertising campaigns, promotional deals and streaming.
• Kacey Musgraves – will guest on the first edition of a new podcast featuring archival chats with country music legends before they were famous. “Radio Texas Live Legends”, hosted by DJ Buddy Logan, who interviewed everyone who’s anyone in country music as part of his radio program. Radio Texas Live Legends debuts tomorrow, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday.
• Carly Pearce – in the wake of her surprise invitation by Dolly Parton to join the Grand Ole Opry, she says she’s been receiving congratulations from some big names. Barbara Mandrell (whom she has never met) called unexpectedly, and she received a congratulatory text from Trisha Yearwood. She’ll be officially inducted on August 3rd.
• CMT Awards – Big changes are coming for 2022. Not only will the show move to a new network, it’ll take place 2 months earlier than usual. New broadcast home CBS has announced that the 2022 CMT Music Awards will take place on April 3. The fan-voted show has traditionally taken place in June.

SHOOTING THE BULL

CORONAUPDATE:
➢ Lottery incentives DO NOT lead to more people getting COVID vaccinations, according to researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine. They analyzed Ohio’s “Vax-a-Million” lottery-based incentive system, which gave away $5 million in prizes, and found “lotteries are of limited value in increasing vaccine uptake. Therefore, the resources devoted to vaccine lotteries may be more successfully invested in programs that target…reasons for vaccine hesitancy.” (Of course, if winning a million dollars won’t convince you to get a vaccine that could save your family’s lives, I’m not sure what else would!)
➢A COVID-19 treatment capable of ending the pandemic once and for all may already be available. A team of researchers, including three U.S. government senior scientists, are calling for governments to treat coronavirus patients with ivermectin. Ivermectin is a medication used to treat many types of parasite infestations. The findings show the drug not only prevents people from contracting COVID, it also defeats the virus and saves lives. Study authors are urging doctors to demand that local and national health officials add ivermectin to the list of approved coronavirus treatments right away. (It seems those vaccine incentive lotteries were REALLY unnecessary, then!)

DILLEMMA:
Here’s the latest TikTok food trend: As if air fryer pasta chips weren’t strange enough, TikTokers are now obsessing over “Snickles,” a bizarre combination of Snickers and pickles. That’s right, Snickles are pickles that have been cut in half and stuffed with a Snickers candy bar in the middle. The odd pairing resulted in the hashtag #snickle amassing over 10.8 million views. While the idea has been around for a few years, the trend skyrocketed after TikToker @liamslunchbox posted a video of himself preparing the tangy yet sweet treat, attracting almost 500,000 likes. This follows other bizarre food trends like mustard on watermelon, and chlorophyll water, which is made with a plant molecule that aids in growth and creates a green shade. LINK (***Caution: content***): https://tinyurl.com/y8pwkjhk
(I’ve heard of being “in a pickle” . . . but never heard of putting a candy bar in one!)
(What’s your best food “mash-up” idea?)
(Great idea…except for the part about the pickle!)

GREAT MOOS:
Scientists may have found an unlikely solution to the problem of plastic pollution — inside the stomachs of cows. Researchers in Austria found that common plastics can be broken down when exposed to rumen, the matter found in the largest part of a cow’s stomach. The microbes and enzymes found within rumen can break down common plastics — including those widely used for plastic bags, bottles, textiles and food packaging. They hope by replicating the enzymes responsible for the process, they can degrade some of the millions of metric tons of non-biodegradable plastic clogging up oceans, waterways and other parts of the environment. [And yes, the word “rumen” is related to the word “ruminate,” which comes from a Latin word meaning “to chew over.”]
(So instead of plastics all over the ocean, we’ll have cow barf?)
(If this is true, could someone please explain to me why milk doesn’t eat through the plastic jug?)

SAVE MONEY AT THE PUMPS:
With gas prices in some places double what they were 15 months ago, and no relief in sight, here are some tips to increase your gas mileage by up to 30% . . .
⇒ Check the air:  Do it before you go anywhere. Low tire pressure can affect fuel economy, performance and handling, plus accelerate tire wear. (And if you think gas is expensive, check out the prices on tires these days. It’s highway rubbery!)
⇒ Remove your roof rack:  At highway speeds, more than 50% of engine power goes to overcoming aerodynamic drag, so don’t carry unneeded items on the roof if you don’t have to.
⇒ Don’t speed:  You knew that was coming. You’ll not only avoid getting a ticket, you’ll save money on fuel. (Now you’re starting to sound like my wife…)
⇒ Drive smart:  Using cruise control, limiting use of air conditioning, combining errands and avoiding idling can also help save fuel. So can simply driving smoothly. Accelerate moderately and anticipate the movement of traffic.
⇒ Don’t buy premium:  Only pay extra for “high-octane” if your owner’s manual indicates that you should. (I’m pretty sure my bank account indicates I SHOULDN’T!)
⇒ Buy gas during the week:  Generally, it’s cheaper between Monday-Thursday in the evening. Many gas stations drop the price in the evening and during the work week, only to raise it back up in the morning and again once the weekend arrives. (That’s what they do around here…except for the part about “dropping the price”!!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Thousands of crowdsourced volunteers reported that YouTube’s recommendation algorithm referred them to videos that they regretted watching, according to a study by Mozilla. 71% of videos deemed by volunteers as “regrettable” were recommended by YouTube’s artificial intelligence, which is designed to keep users glued to the app. Viewers found that these videos often fall into categories such as “misinformation, violent or graphic content, hate speech, and spam/scams”. According to Mozilla, “When it’s actively suggesting that people watch content that violates YouTube’s policies, the algorithm seems to be working at odds with the platform’s stated aims, their own community guidelines, and the goal of making the platform a safe place for people”.

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Beans ‘n Franks Day”. One way to get rid of the extra wieners when you buy ‘em in packs of 10, but buns come in 8-packs. (Tomorrow is ‘Evacuate the Studio Day’)

• “Gruntled Workers Day”. We always hear about ‘disgruntled’ workers, but what about people who are happy with their job and can’t wait to go to work each day? Gruntled workers, this is your day … ya eager-beaver keeners.

• “Go West Day”, on the anniversary of the day in 1865 that Horace Greeley, founder and editor of the New-York Tribune, advised readers to “Go west young man”. (Today is all about going west…at least until your GPS says, “Recalculating!”)

• “Barbershop Music Appreciation Day”, created in 2005 by the worldwide organization of women singers “Sweet Adelines International” to mark its 60th anniversary. Today, relax and enjoy the sweet voices of the Sweet Adelines, or a Barbershop Quartet.
