The Sheet Hits the Fans!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
Hold-out Jennifer Lopez is said to be ready to confirm she’ll return to “American Idol” (FOX) as a judge for a 2nd season (she’d be crazy not to – it jump-started her career!) . . . After quitting last week, Vinny Guadagnino has reportedly now moved back into MTV’s “Jersey Shore” house (just like the script demanded) . . . 13-year-old “Super 8” actress Elle Fanning has just become the new face of the ‘Marc’ clothing line by Marc Jacobs (could be nepotism – her 17-year-old sister Dakota Fanning also had that gig) . . . “Torchwood” actor John Barrowman (‘Captain Jack Harkness’) claims half the straight actors who are playing straight characters in Hollywood are actually gay, some pretending to have wives and be married (OK, we’re interested – names?) . . . David & Victoria Beckham have named their new baby daughter ‘Harper Seven Beckham’ (proving they can’t even count – she’s #4) . . . A struggling actor has been charged with burglary and criminal mischief following a weekend break-in at Broadway’s Ed Sullivan Theater, home to CBS-TV’s “Late Show With David Letterman” (trying to ‘break into’ show biz?) . . . Longtime “Vogue” magazine editor Anna Wintour is reportedly in negotiations to write her autobiography and is said to be interviewing writers to help her tackle the book (now there’s the gig from hell!) . . . And remember Nikki Blonsky, the round mound of sound that played the lead role in the movie version of “Hairspray” (2007)? Well, she’s now working in a shoe store in her hometown of Great Neck NY (thereby connecting the words ‘fame’ and ‘fleeting’).

NAVEL GAZING:
North Carolina State University researchers have found 1,400 strains of bacteria lurking in … human belly buttons. The study, entitled ‘Belly Button Biodiversity’, has found that 80% of the isolated bacteria are from 40 common species, most of them ordinary skin dwellers that are typically harmless. However, 662 unrecognized strains have also been discovered which could be new species. (That’s it, I’m tossing my lint collection … as soon as I get a Hazmat suit.)

• 73% think sending a text message during a date is rude.
• 68% say it’s a no-no to ‘check-in’ on Foursquare or another platform when you arrive at a date.
• 51% find taking a call during a date offensive.

• Surprisingly, only 35% of singles under 30 have a problem with their date taking and later posting photos to Facebook or Twitter.

PRIVACY RISKS:
A look at a few seemingly innocent ways you risk identity theft each day …
• Playing Facebook Games – The makers of “Farmville” are masterminds at collecting data from games. You may think you’re just killing time, but you’re also revealing personal info.
• Using Public Wi-Fi – Whether in a coffee shop or an airport, hackers can gather the cookies from whatever sites you visit., harvest your passwords, and create other digital mayhem.
• Following Celebrities on Twitter – Celebrity Twitter accounts have anonymously been hacked and followers invited to access or download material infected with various viruses.
• Having a Cellphone – Just one example: Penn State researchers recently looked at 30 popular Android apps and found two-thirds of them misused or suspiciously used user data.
• Trusting ‘Experts’ With Your Data – Almost all of us have given personal data to ‘trustworthy’ companies and governments. Thanks to human error and tenacious hackers, even this private info can become exposed.

REASONS YOU FORGET:
In his book “Thank You Brain For All You Remember (What You Forgot Was My Fault)”, Texas A&M professor Bill Klemm claims your memory can be sharpened through a regular workout for the brain. Klemm notes there are 4 major obstacles to remembering things – information overload, multi-tasking, stress, and lack of sleep. (Coincidentally, 4 of the major hurdles for morning radio personalities.)

ENERGY FM:
Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology say scavenging the ambient energy all around us could provide a new way to power small electronic devices. Put simply, the energy transmitted by radio and TV transmitters, cellphone networks, and satellite systems can apparently be captured and harnessed. The scientists have already managed to power a temperature sensor using electromagnetic energy emanating from a local TV station. (Your new station slogan: “The most music AND we recharge your smartphone!”)

CAMP CANINE:
In the past 20 years, more than a dozen summer camps for dogs have sprung up across North America. For instance, at ‘Dog Scout Camp’ pooches can earn merit badges in 60 different activities, ranging from ‘Backpacking’ and ‘Cart-Pulling’ to ‘Search & Rescue’ and ‘Picking Up Litter’. (Why don’t they teach them to stoop n’ scoop on their own?)

• “Swimming Pool Day”, a good day to call a friend who has one and invite yourself over. According to an online fact site, if you spend 1 hour in a public swimming pool you come into contact with about 50 oz of urine. But then … that’s according to an online ‘fact’ site.
