BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Michael Jackson’s 2,800-acre ‘Neverland’ ranch – once home to a zoo, an amusement park, and its own fire station – has gone up for sale with a price tag of $100 million. Jackson bought the Santa Barbara CA property in 1987 for $19.5 million but struggled to pay for it, until an investment company stepped in to help save it from auction. The property is now called ‘Sycamore Valley Ranch’ and has undergone extensive redevelopment since Jackson’s death in 2009. Anyone wanting to view the property is being subjected to ‘extensive pre-qualification’.

★ The cast & creators of TV comedy “The Big Bang Theory” (CBS) have created a $4-million scholarship for future scientists. The program, which documents the achievements and obsessions of 4 science nerds, has just finished its 8th season. Although the sitcom is partly set at California’s Caltech, the fund sponsors studies in science, technology, engineering, and maths at rival UCLA. The endowment is the university’s 1st to be created by a TV series. Its first 20 scholars are being announced on the “Big Bang Theory” set this Autumn. Afterward, the scholarship will support 5 students each year.

★ A new book on 1940s-50s singing sensation Frank Sinatra is on the way. Produced with the participation of the Sinatra family and drawing upon their vast personal archives, “Sinatra 100” will feature 400+ photos, half of which that have never been seen by fans. According to the book’s author, Charles Pignone, there are no current artists that are capable of duplicating Sinatra’s extraordinary career. The tome will be published by Thames & Hudson later this year.

★ And  ‘Pussy Galore’ is back! Late author Ian Fleming’s famous leading lady is being reunited with ‘007’ in Anthony Horowitz’s new official ‘James Bond’ novel, titled “Trigger Mortis”. The new spy adventure begins in 1957, two weeks after the end of Fleming’s original novel “Goldfinger”. As well as ‘Galore’ (played by Honor Blackman in 1964’s “Goldfinger” film), the new book features a new ‘Bond’ girl called ‘Jeopardy Lane’; and ‘Jai Seung Sin’, described as a sadistic, scheming Korean adversary. “Trigger Mortis” is being published by Orion on September 8th.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• The Bee Gees – A ‘lost’ Robin Gibb album is released today, 45 years after it was recorded. “Sing Slowly Sisters” was recorded in 1969-70 and existed on bootlegs only. The remastered version is titled “Saved By The Bell – The Collected Works of Robin Gibb: 1969-70”.
• Beyoncé – Much of her iconic 2008 “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” choreography was lifted from old Bob Fosse routines.
• Echosmith – Frontwoman Sydney Sierota has landed a modeling contract with top agency Wilhelmina Models. The 18-year-old joins a star-studded roster of multi-talented artists at Wilhelmina, including Nick Jonas, “Boyhood’s” Ellar Coltrane, and Coco Rocha.
• Jason Derulo – His new album “Everything Is 4” is out tomorrow. The 25-year-old tells “Daily Mirror” he often gets approached by ‘cougars’ who attempt to seduce him by singing the lyrics to his hit w/Snoop Dogg, “Wiggle”. Derulo doesn’t mind; in fact, he thinks it’s ”awesome”.
• Little Big Town – They’re once again atop the ‘Billboard Hot Country Songs’ chart this week with “Girl Crush”.
• Miranda Lambert – After a radio consultant’s comments last week about putting fewer female singers on country radio, she’s tweeted one simple message: “I am gonna do everything in my power to support and promote female singer/songwriters in country music. Always.”
• Taylor Swift – Her light-up concert wristbands are being credited with saving lives. After her gig in Baton Rouge LA, 3 girls were trapped in a smashed-up car after the one driving fell asleep. But their bracelets that flash in time to music eventually caught the attention of a woman driving by, who helped them out of the car and called for medical assistance.

PHONE PROJECTOR:
Chinese electronics giant Lenovo has unveiled its new  ‘Smart Cast’ phone with a built-in laser projector that can be used to display a virtual keyboard for typing or piano keys for playing music. A kickstand mounted on the back of the phone keeps the device upright while the virtual keyboard is in use. The phone’s laser projector can also be used to beam images and videos onto walls. Adjusting the device’s lens can then turn it from a standard wall projector into ‘surface mode’, in which it beams the display onto a tabletop. (Cool, now you can watch “Orange Is the New Black” … on the side of your house.)

PRESSING PROBLEM:
Brit music promoter Harvey Goldsmith says the biggest problem facing the recording biz today is the inability to produce enough vinyl records. It seems there just aren’t a sufficient number of pressing plants left to keep up with the demand, nor crafters who actually know how to make vinyl LPs. Sales of vinyl records have gone up 100-fold in the last 2 years, and risen almost 70% this year alone. Recent releases from Arctic Monkeys, Jack White, Pink Floyd, and Royal Blood are among those fueling the demand. Nowadays if an artist wants to produce a vinyl version of their new project, they have to wait in line 4-to-6 months before a factory can schedule production. (Think vinyl’s back for good or just a passing fad?)

POCKET OPTOMETRIST:
Developers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine hope their new app can transform eyecare for millions of people in remote parts of the world. The ‘Portable Eye Examination Kit’ (PEEK) uses the phone’s camera to scan the lens of the eye for cataracts. It uses the camera’s flash to illuminate the back of the eye to check for disease. And its ‘Acuity App’ uses a shrinking letter that appears onscreen as a basic vision test. The first clinical tests in Kenya show the vision test gives equivalent results to traditional eye charts. It’s also relatively cheap, costing less than $500 compared to bulky eye exam equipment that can run $150,000+. (All well and good but what we wanna know is … can we get an app to replace a colonoscopy?)
