BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Late TV icons Larry King and Alex Trebek were among the award winners at the Daytime Emmys on Friday night. King was named ‘Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host’ for “Larry King Now”, while longtime “Jeopardy!” star Trebek landed the ‘Outstanding Game Show Host’ honor. Jeopardy! also picked up ‘Outstanding Game Show’. Elsewhere, it was a great night for Kelly Clarkson, who was named ‘Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host’, while her namesake daytime show scored ‘Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show’.

★ Tom Cruise’s trouble-plagued “Mission: Impossible 7” shoot has reportedly been suspended again due to another positive COVID test. This comes 2 weeks after it was reported the cast and crew were in a race against time to finish the blockbuster, following several delays as a result of the pandemic. Production has been put on pause several times after a series of positive COVID tests and Cruise famously blasted crew members for violating health and safety guidelines on set.

★ “Good Girls” run has ended, much to the dismay of many fans. NBC has canceled the dramedy after 4 seasons and a successful stint on Netflix. In spite of the protests of its loyal fanbase, not even the streamer is willing to pick up another season of the show, which starred Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman and Manny Montana. Good Girls was a dud ratings-wise for NBC, and the network balked at footing the bill for another season. Netflix has sole rights to stream the show, but despite its success there, it didn’t see the value in producing a 5th season, either.

★ Jonny Lee Miller will play former UK Prime Minister John Major in Season 5 of “The Crown.” Major served as prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party from 1990-97. The fourth season of “The Crown” was released in November 2020, but fans will have to wait until 2022 for Season 5. Last July, series creator Peter Morgan announced the show will end with Season 6.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Drake – is the musical artist who has inspired the most baby names in the US, according to a new ranking by Jewellery Box. They say more than 25,000 babies who were born between 2000 and 2019 share his name. The rest of the top-5, in order, are: ‘Jonas’, ‘Miley’, ‘Prince’, and ‘Demi’.
• Ed Sheeran – admits he makes music for himself rather than his fans. Quote: “I’ve always tried to make records that I want to listen to…But people always say, ‘Do you make music for your fan base?’ And I go, ‘No.’…I wouldn’t be happy. I’d be making music to appease someone else.”
• Mumford & Sons – Banjoist Winston Marshall has exited the group after becoming embroiled in controversy for praising a book by right-wing journalist Andy Ngo. In March, Marshall tweeted: “Finally had the time to read your important book. You’re a brave man.” Marshall later apologized and announced he would take some time away from the group “to examine my blindspots.”
• Belinda Carlisle – According to their concert schedules, both she and Todd Rundgren will be skipping their Rock Hall of Fame inductions on Oct. 30. Carlisle (who will be enshrined as a Go-Go’s member) has a gig in Sheffield, England set for that date, and Rundgren is booked for a show in Cincinnati.
• ZZ Top – will kick off an extensive North American tour next month. “A Celebration of ZZ Top” begins July 16 in Manchester, IA. They’ll play through the end of the year, then pick up again in April 2022, finishing the tour May 14 in St. John’s, NL. More dates are expected to be added.
• Rush – Some classic cars once owned by late drummer Neil Peart are up for sale. The collection, which he called the “Silver Surfers,” includes a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (estimated worth: $650,00-725,000), a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 ($900,000-1 million), a 1970 Lamborghini Miura P400 S ($1.2 million-1.5 million), and others. They will be auctioned Aug. 13-14 in Pebble Beach, CA.
• Sam Hunt – Thursday, he previewed the “rough acoustic demo” for an emotional ballad tentatively titled ‘Came the Closest’ via Instagram. • Trace Adkins – is joined by Luke Bryan and Pitbull (!) on ‘Where the Country Girls At?’, which was released on Friday. • Kelsea Ballerini – is going to release a collection of poetry. (MORE) WORK FROM HOME:
The past year-plus of pandemic living has resulted in big changes to everyone’s routine, but it could be that Moms have had it worst. New research shows that women took on the bulk of additional child care duties in 2020 – to the tune of an additional 173 hours of work without pay, compared to an extra 59 hours for men, as work and school were done remotely. According to the study by the Center for Global Development, in low and middle-income countries, women took on an additional 217 hours of extra free labor, and men an added 70 hours. And the pandemic hasn’t been easy on kids, either, with students from low to middle-income backgrounds missing an average of 124 days of school due to closures.
(Actually, my kids didn’t miss it at all!)

WHACKY JABACKY:
A Manitoba marijuana dispensary is offering a year’s supply of free weed in an effort at encouraging people to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The “Joints for Jabs” initiative, introduced by Winnipeg-based retailer Delta 9, is part of the company’s responsibility as an “essential service” to do what they can “to get as many Manitobans vaccinated as possible and help get things back to the way they were before the pandemic”, according to a spokesperson. The program, running until September, offers 3 grand prize winners up to $100 worth of weed (about 28 grams) per month for 12 months. Every Delta 9 store in Manitoba will also give away 20 free joints each month. To enter, customers don’t need to buy anything, they just need to prove they’ve received both doses of a two-dose vaccine.
(Hold on: Do they mean ‘a year’s supply’ in normal times, or during a pandemic? Asking for a friend…)

“Quarantine” was the most-commonly misspelled word over the past year, according to according to Google Trends. Communications giant AT&T reviewed the top-searched words that users in each US state looked up when searching “how to spell” for the one-year period ending March 24, 2021. The phrase “how to spell quarantine” was the most popular in 12 states, and was often entered in the search engine as “corn teen”. Seven states struggled with spelling “favorite”, while other words that commonly appeared in “how to spell” searches included “coronavirus”, “which” and “every”.

FOODS YOU CAN EAT PAST THEIR EXPIRY DATE:
✓ Cereal: As long as it is sealed, it can last months past the date on the box. Stale or not, it’s still safe to eat. (Good. Because that’s the only thing I can cook!)
✓ Canned goods: As long as there are no dents or rust on the can, they should be good for years. (They were never “good” in the first place!)
✓ Chocolate: You might notice a white film on it, but don’t worry, it’s not mold—it’s what’s known as chocolate bloom. As long as you’ve kept it in a cool place, it should be perfectly safe to enjoy. (Good. Because it would kill me to have to throw chocolate out!)
✓ Bread: It may get stale, but it’s still safe to eat. (At least for a while…)
✓ Eggs: You can tell if it is still good to eat by placing it in a glass of water. If it sinks, dig in; if it floats, toss it.
✓ Pasta: Because it doesn’t contain water, it can last longer than its posted shelf life. Keep it in a cool, dry place.
✓ Yogurt: Unopened, it is usually good for 3 weeks after its expiry date. Opened? Still should be good for a week.
✓ Ketchup/Mustard: Ketchup is good for a year (unopened) after its expiry, mustard: 2 years. (Makes you wonder why they even HAVE expiry dates…)
✓ Frozen Foods: They may lose some taste, but they are still safe long after the dates on the label. (As if your TV dinner had any taste to begin with…)
✓ Peanut butter: Unopened, it is usually good for a year after the expiry date. Opened, still good for a few months. (As if it would ever last that long…)
(Actually, you can eat ANY food past its expiry date…once!)
