Happy St Paddy’s Day, for Sheet’s Sake!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Steven Yeun made history Monday by becoming the first Asian American actor to be nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. His performance in “Minari,” a semiautobiographical drama about a Korean American family cobbling together a life in rural Arkansas in the 1980s, has earned him widespread critical acclaim. It marks long overdue recognition for both Yeun, who has had a long career in TV and film, and for Asian American actors, who have been historically underrepresented in film and at the Oscars.

★ Chadwick Boseman has been posthumously nominated for best actor at the 2021 Oscars. He’s become the seventh actor to receive a posthumous nomination, joining the likes of Heath Ledger, James Dean, and Peter Finch. Boseman is the current favorite to win the best actor Oscar. If he did, he’d be just the third to win posthumously, alongside Ledger, who won for his role in “The Dark Knight”, and Finch (“Network”).

★ A long-standing rumor about Princess Diana and Burt Reynolds has been confirmed. The story was that in 1993, Princess Diana sent a joking thank-you letter to Reynolds and his wife, Loni Anderson for keeping her out of the headlines for a while with their highly-publicized break-up. Anderson confirmed the story during an interview on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen”. Princess Diana did apparently get a short reprieve from the non-stop news coverage when Reynolds and Anderson announced their split. When a fan brought up the old rumor to Anderson, she laughed, saying: “Yes, that’s true.”

★ In addition to being CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk has added a new title: “TechnoKing of Tesla.” The cheeky “appointment” was revealed in a new Tesla filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, with no further elaboration. At the same time, the electric car maker said CFO Zach Kirkhorn has been given the new title “Master of Coin” — a clear nod to Tesla buying $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin last month.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Drake – has become first artist ever to debut 3 songs in the top three of the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. ‘What’s Next’ (containing the lyric: “I’m on the hot one hundo, numero uno”) entered the chart at #1, while ‘Wants and Needs’, ft. Lil Baby debuted at #2 and ‘Lemon Pepper Freestyle’, ft. Rick Ross, is new at #3.
• Beyoncé — made history by winning her 28th Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance with ‘Black Parade’. But she wasn’t the only member of her family to win a Grammy on Sunday. Her daughter Blue Ivy Carter became the second-youngest winner ever, at 9, when the mother-daughter duo won Best Music Video for ‘Brown Skin Girl’.
• U2 — have announced the online concert series “The Virtual World” that will be broadcast on their YouTube channel. It will showcase 4 legendary performances, kicking off today with the band’s 2001 concert at Slane Castle in Ireland. Subsequent weeks will feature shows from Red Rocks in Denver, Mexico City and Paris.
• Bon Jovi — plan to scale back on touring. Jon Bon Jovi says he still plans to hit the road when it’s possible, but “I just don’t see me doing 100-show tours any more. It’s not really motivational for me.”
He’s still good with shorter treks, “as long as we do it in a manner that’s pleasurable.”
• Queen — drummer Roger Taylor revealed that the band jammed some Cream covers with David Bowie during the 1981 studio sessions in which they recorded ‘Under Pressure’. Quote: “If we look to the archives, there’s…all sorts of old songs … we did ‘N.S.U.’ and ‘I Feel Free,’ just for a laugh really, and then we decided, ‘Let’s write one for ourselves.’”
• George Strait, Miranda Lambert and Willie Nelson – All 3 Texas natives are in the lineup for Matthew McConaughey’s “We’re Texas” virtual benefit concert on March 21. It will help Texans impacted by the winter storms last month. It will also feature performances from Don Henley, Gary Clark Jr., Kelly Clarkson, Khalid, Leon Bridges, Lukas Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Post Malone and more.
• Charley Pride — The Texas Rangers MLB team is paying tribute to the country music legend, who died at 86 in December. They are naming their spring training facility after Pride, who was a minority owner. The stadium’s new name is Charley Pride Field. Pride pitched professionally in the Negro and Minor Leagues throughout the 1950s.

CROWDSAUCING:
Heinz ketchup of Canada has announced 3 new mashups, which they claim are “crowdsauced from the most random corners of the internet”: ‘Hanch’, ‘Tarchup’, and ‘Wasabioli’. “Hanch” is a combination of hot sauce and ranch, “Tarchup” is a mashup of Tartar sauce and ketchup, while Wasabioli comes from mixing together garlic and wasabi mayo. According to a promotional video, the company “dug deep across the internet” to find old posts containing suggestions from regular people on what kind of sauces they’d like to see become available. For instance, apparently the idea for “Hanch” came from “the 12th post in an archived sub-thread of people arguing about pizza”. All 3 new sauces are available now. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/un8h3cy7
(I’m just glad they never found that drunken post I made about BBQ sauce and Oreos! Good idea at the time…)
(…for about a week!)

RESEARCH ANIMAL:
University of Guelph researchers say they’re surprised by the findings of their study about how vegan diets affect the health of cats. They conducted an online questionnaire of cat owners, and found that cats on vegan diets have no more health problems than felines fed conventional, meat-based diets. Over 1,300 cat owners in the US and Canada were surveyed, with just over 18% feeding their cats a plant-based diet. Lead researcher Sarah Dodd says the results are surprising because previous studies have indicated that cats, which are considered carnivores, need nutrients from meat, and without them, they can suffer from liver, heart, skin and eye problems. But she also pointed out that research has shown most people are notoriously bad at scoring their own cats’ bodies, so more objective studies are needed. She says anyone considering a vegan diet for their cat should use commercial food over a homemade diet, and to let a veterinarian know, so any potential problems can be caught early.
(Also, let your cat know, so it has a chance to run away!)
(It’s a good way to get rid of mice…I guarantee it!)
(Yes, I’m sure a vegan diet is ok for cats…but I’m also sure that cats aren’t ok with a vegan diet!)

THROAT ANECDOTE:
Another weird “fact” about the human body has blown up on TikTok. A man is challenging his followers to try to swallow more than 3 times in a row. Why? TikTok’er @jessiebeharrell says “you can only swallow 2-3 times before your body forces you to stop”. Viewers of his video made comments like “I did 3 times and then I felt like I forgot how to swallow” and “4 times and then I saw God”. Give it a try, while I explain. According to the site “IFLScience.com” after swallowing a certain number of times, it does become difficult for most people. One of the main factors is the diminishing amount of saliva. As it runs out, diminishing saliva makes it difficult for your muscles to produce a peristaltic sequence (a series of contractions beginning in the esophagus), making it near impossible (for some) to perform a swallow. (The only thing harder to swallow is reality TV!)

IRISH SUPERSTITIONS:
➢ If you trip and fall in a graveyard, you will most likely die by the end of the year. (Especially if when you fall, you are running from a knife-wielding psychopath!)
➢ To counteract the bad luck from black cat crossing your path, make a triangle shape with your thumbs and forefingers and spit at the cat through the hole. This also works when you accidentally walk under a ladder. (In this case, spit at the ladder, not the cat!)
➢ If you find a horseshoe and nail it to the door, it will bring good luck. This will not work if the shoe is bought or given as a gift by someone else. (In fact, let’s just say “This will not work!”)
➢ Handing someone a knife is bad luck. Always put it on the table in front of them. (Although it is better to have someone hand you a knife, than to have them throw it to you…)
➢ If the palm of your hand itches, you’re going to come into some money.
➢ If your elbow itches, you will be changing beds.
➢ If your nose is itchy, you are going to have a fight with the person nearest to you. To remedy this, punch them in the arm and shake their hand.
➢ If your ear feels hot, someone is talking about you.
➢ Never ask a man who is going fishing where he is going. (But if I know he’s going fishing, why would I ask?)
➢ If you get your shirt wet while washing the dishes, you will marry a drunk. (And if that’s the case, get used to washing glasses!)

DID YOU KNOW?
An analysis of 44 recent studies of more than 9,000 seafood samples from restaurants, fishmongers and supermarkets in more than 30 countries found that 36% were mislabelled, exposing seafood fraud on a vast global scale. The UK and Canada had the highest rates of mislabelling at 40% of those tested, followed by the US at 38%. And some samples of prawn balls sold in Singapore were found to be entirely non-aquatic, containing pork and not a trace of prawn. (As underhanded as this sounds, I’m guilty of it too. The only way I can get my 5-year-old to eat fish sticks is to tell her they’re chicken nuggets!)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “St Patrick’s Day”, the Irish national holiday that began as a ‘solemn religious observance’ to honor St Patrick (389-461 AD), patron saint of Ireland. It’s a public holiday in Ireland, Montserrat, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland & Labrador. Some fast facts …
– It’s been an Irish holiday for 1,500 years.
– The world’s largest “St Patrick’s Parade” is in NYC where over a million spectators and 100,000 participants usually turn out. A tradition since 1762, the parade lasts about 6 hours.
– It was first celebrated in Canada in 1765 in Québec City QC.
– Since 1965, the Chicago River has been dyed green for the “Chicago St Patrick’s Parade”, an idea conceived when a plumber was observed using green dye to trace leaks from a building.
– Green is associated with “St Patrick’s Day” because it’s the color of Spring, Ireland, and the shamrock.
• “Corned Beef & Cabbage Day”, you may think that corned beef and boiled cabbage is a traditional Irish dish for St. Patrick’s Day, actually it is not. It is an Irish-American invention, originating when Irish immigrants discovered that beef was cheaper than pork in America at the time.
• “Submarine Day”, to commemorate this date in 1898, when Irish-born engineer John Philip Holland demonstrated a submarine he designed, the Holland VI, for the U.S. Navy. During the demonstration, the vessel was submerged for 1 hour and 40 minutes. (That seemed to “go down” well…)
• “Camp Fire Girls Day”, the sister organization to the Boy Scouts of America. In 1975 the name was changed to Camp Fire Boys and Girls, in 2001 to Camp Fire USA, and to Camp Fire in 2012.

BULL’S BITS
BS WHACK O’FACTS:
✓ St. Patrick wasn’t Irish. He was actually British, born to Roman parents in Wales.
✓ Although he is given credit for driving the snakes out of Ireland, fossil records show that the country has never been home to any snakes.
✓ The original Guinness Brewery in Dublin, Ireland has a 6,000-year lease.
✓ There’s no corn in corned beef. That’s a nod to the large grains of salt that were historically used to cure meats, which were known as “corns.”
✓ It could have been called St. Maewyn’s Day. Patrick’s birth name was Maewyn Succat, but he changed his name to Patricius after becoming a priest.
✓ Until the 1970s, St. Patrick’s Day was a religious occasion, and thus a dry holiday where the only alcohol available was at the national dog show.

TODAY’S SLICE OF BS:
➠ It’s St. Patrick’s Day! (“Fact:” Right after St Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, he guided them to the TV studio for their usual appearance on “The View”.)
➠ By all accounts, St Patrick was a very nice human who lived a pretty darn-good pure life. (What a better way to honor him than by sitting on the edge of a gutter, vomiting corned beef spew into your green paper hat!)
➠ Dr. Phil once said his greatest regret was getting a vasectomy at age 29. (I WOULD let him know it’s possible to have it reversed, but then that would be MY biggest regret!)
➠ Fact: The creator of “Star Trek” originally wanted Spock to be female. (And instead of the “Vulcan nerve pinch” Spock would have just used “the silent treatment.”)
➠ Did you know Facebook is headquartered at “1 Hacker Way” in Menlo Park, California? It’s True!! (It’s right at the intersection of “Colossal Waste of Time Drive,” just off the “Misinformation Highway.”
