BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Leonardo DiCaprio and his girlfriend, Vittoria Ceretti, have sparked engagement rumors, as she was spotted wearing a new ring on her left hand. The Italian model, who is 25, flaunted the rock while grabbing lunch with DiCaprio at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. The 49-year-old “Wolf of Wall Street” star attempted to stay under the radar in his signature black LA Dodgers baseball cap and a face mask strapped to his chin. It is unclear whether Ceretti’s ring is, in fact, an engagement ring, but the Vogue cover star has not worn the piece of jewelry in any recent Instagram posts. The 2 first sparked dating rumors last summer when they were spotted on the dance floor at a club in Spain.

★ Cillian Murphy is headed back into the world of non-fiction. After winning a best actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer”, he has signed on to star in and produce “Blood Runs Coal”. The project is based on a book following the 1969 murder of mining union organizer Joseph “Jock” Yablonski, who was killed at home with his wife and daughter. That followed his campaigning against a corrupt union leader, and sparked a lengthy investigation that unveiled shady dealings within the coal industry. Murphy is also attached to work on a sequel trilogy to the 2002 zombie movie “28 Days Later”, and a ‘Peaky Blinders’ film.

★ Paging TV’s erstwhile Dr. Carter! Noah Wylie will star in and exec-produce a new medical drama for Max called “The Pitt”, and fellow “ER” vets John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill are also on board as EPs. The Pitt, which has received a 15-episode order, is described as “a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh.”
-TVLine
★ Warner Bros. is doubling down on the business of Timothée Chalamet. The studio signed a multi-year feature film deal with the actor to collaborate on future projects as a star and producer. Chalamet led back-to-back box office hits: Last December’s “Wonka” ($632 million globally) and this month’s “Dune: Part Two” ($575 million globally and counting). The studio says he is the first actor in 4 decades to star in the top 2 domestic films that were released in 8 months. Now, he’ll enjoy a salary of over $10 million per film, after earning about $8 million for “Wonka”, sources say.
-Variety
★ Robert Pattinson is a dad! The 37-year-old Twilight actor and his 32-year-old reported fiancée, model Suki Waterhouse were recently spotted pushing a stroller in LA, says The Daily Mail. It’s unclear when they welcomed their bundle of joy — neither Pattinson nor Waterhouse has confirmed the news — but the outlet noted that the couple were seen in February, with Waterhouse looking very pregnant.

A.I. ALE:
Finally! Some good that could come from the use of AI! A team of Belgian researchers say they are getting close to using artificial intelligence to develop some of the best-tasting beer, ever. They used machine learning algorithms to analyze a vast dataset of beer recipes, chemical compositions, and flavor profiles. The idea was to create a model that can predict how different aroma compounds contribute to a beer’s taste and overall consumer appeal. To do this, the researchers did a detailed analysis of 250 Belgian beers, and the aroma compounds in each. Using that data, they used AI to uncover the complex relationships between a beer’s ingredients, its flavor profile, and its overall consumer rating. By training machine learning models on this extensive dataset, they were able to create a system that can predict key aromas and appreciation scores without the need for human tasters. From there, they were able to fine-tune the recipe of an existing ale, adding specific aroma compounds that the AI suggested — which blind taste tests confirmed to be significantly better than the original. The scientists say their main goal is to “make better alcohol-free beer.”
(Sorry, guys. There are some things that even AI just can’t do!)
(Originally, they started their research on 250 American beers, but found they all tasted exactly the same!)

GERMINATING GERMS:
While it’s true that these days, it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing hand sanitizer stations available, there are other, far more sinister sources of germs than doorknobs and handrails. In fact, scientists are warning of 7 common spots where bacteria are thriving. In fact, these areas, places you might never suspect are hotbeds for microbial life, are all germier than the average toilet seat, according to science…
1. Smartphones: When did you properly clean yours last? They are likely a key source of bacteria entering the body. (That explains my blue tooth…)
2. Kitchen sponges: One study even found that the average kitchen sponge carries more bacterial species than a lab Petri dish. (Well, what did you think they use to clean a petri dish?)
3. Water bottles: Reused water bottles can contain mold and bacteria, especially if they aren’t washed thoroughly. (Take that, Stanley!)
4. Fountain soda water: The water lines from these things are usually teeming with bacteria, researchers say. That includes salmonella and E. coli. (And Dr. Pepper!)
5. Handbags: Consider all the bacteria-laden items that get stored inside the bags, none of which are routinely cleaned. (Think of THAT next time you arrive home and plunk it on the kitchen counter!)
6. Self-checkout screens: They are touched by so many dirty fingers, they’re hot beds for bacteria. A British investigation found E. coli on nearly all the surfaces tested. In addition, fecal bacteria and microbes that can lead to urinary tract infections were found on self-service screens. (I’ll remember that next time I order at a McDonald’s kiosk – then sit down to eat!)
7. Pet toys: Of course. Pets handle them with their mouths, and who knows where their mouths have been? Plus, the toys come in contact with all sorts of surfaces around the home. Pet toys can be a source of coliform bacteria, yeast and mold. (And we expect our poor pets to carry these things around?)
(Well, after this, I can see that I’ll now be washing my hands 50 times a day, rather than 25!)

GENIUS APRIL FOOLS’ DAY PRANKS YOUR KIDS WILL TOTALLY FALL FOR:
You’ve got lots of time to prepare over the weekend, to pull these stunts on Monday…
✓ Put a bowl of your kid’s favorite cereal and milk in the freezer overnight, then watch in the morning as your unsuspecting kid clanks a spoon against the frozen milk.
✓ Put a twist on a sunny-side-up egg. A halved peach in yogurt not only looks like an egg, but also makes a delicious breakfast.
✓ Stuff toilet paper into the toe of your kid’s shoes. Especially fun if you casually mention first thing in the morning that her feet look bigger.
✓ Put a ‘For Sale’ sign in your front yard.
✓ Confuse your kid on the ride to school by sticking a sign on the rear of your vehicle reading: “Honk and wave and yell at my kid [name] … he doesn’t know it’s April Fools Day!”
✓ Make –ahem — ‘chocolate chip cookies’ out of mashed potatoes and black beans.
✓ Put a photocopy of your face under the toilet seat and close the lid.
✓ Make candied apples with onions. Your kid will find it hilarious … in a decade or two.
✓ A mashed potato sundae also makes for quite the surprise.
✓ Serve up a glass of juice that is really Jell-O. That first sip will be classic.
✓ Tell your kid you bought her a new iPad. Give her a pirate’s eye patch from a Halloween costume. “I’m sorry, did I say iPad? I meant I bought you an eye pad.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Twenty domesticated parrots have been taught to play video games on iPads – using their tongues. The colorful birds were taught to play a touch-screen children’s game in an effort at staving off boredom for the bright birds. In a study aimed at enriching the parrots’ brains, they were stationed in front of a tablet and learned a game that had them tap circles with their tongues. Not only were they good at it, they appeared to enjoy it too. The study’s researchers, from Northeastern University, hope the findings will contribute to the development of parrot-specific video games that could boost the birds’ quality of life. (Enriching their brains? And all these years, we’ve been telling our kids that playing video games will rot their minds…?) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/299khpm9

BS CHRONOMETER 03.28.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Something on a Stick Day”, celebrating corn dogs, shish kebabs, Popsicles, ice cream bars, and any of the estimated 3 dozen other foods regularly served on a stick.
• “Children’s Picture Book Day”. They combine images and basic words, and are usually read to young children by adults, and later, these are usually the first books the children read on their own. (And the best of all-time? “Hop on Pop”, of course!)
• “Hot Tub Day”, time to soak yourself in a steaming hot tub and bust the stress. Human stew!
• “Weed Appreciation Day”. Easy does it, there…It’s a salute to plants that grow wild, which, though classified as weeds, have a beauty all their own. Think of them as wildflowers, and see if that helps.
• “Black Forest Cake Day”. It is not named directly after the Black Forest in southwestern Germany, but from the specialty liquor of that region, known as Schwarzwälder Kirsch(wasser), distilled from tart cherries.
• “Respect Your Cat Day”. In order to be respected, the desires and needs of cats must be acknowledged. For that to happen, we humans must observe and listen to cats, and we must understand their body language, including their posture and vocalizations. (Or else!)
• “Eat an Edy’s Pie Day” (formerly Eskimo Pies), The inspiration for Eskimo Pie was a boy’s indecision in a store in 1920. He wanted ice cream, then decided on a chocolate bar. When asked why he didn’t buy both, the boy replied, “I only got a nickel.” The proprietor began experimenting with methods of sticking melted chocolate to ice cream, until he found cocoa butter to be perfect.
• “Piano Day”, takes place on the 88th day of the year, because of the number of keys on the instrument. Piano Day celebrates pianos and everything in their orbit: composers, performers, listeners, builders, tuners…and even piano movers.
FRIDAY-
• “Good Friday”, a solemn day commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, as recorded in the Bible. It is observed during Holy Week on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, and sometimes as Black Friday.
• “Mom & Pop Business Owners Day”, honoring family-run, small-time business operations. (***Ask listeners for the most unusual combination of services offered by a single business that they’ve come across, ie: “Sam’s Roofing & Dry Cleaning”…***)
• “Smoke & Mirrors Day”. The name is based on magicians’ illusions, in which they make objects appear or disappear by extending or retracting mirrors amid a confusing burst of smoke. But ‘smoke and mirrors’ may refer to any presentation in which the audience is intended to be deceived. (A press conference, for instance.)
• “Vietnam Veterans Day”. The last US troops left Vietnam 51 years ago today, in 1973. In 1971, at the height of the conflict, some 33,000 soldiers deserted, many moving to Canada.
• “Knights of Columbus Founders Day”, the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven CT, in 1882, it was named in honor of explorer Christopher Columbus.
• “Lemon Chiffon Cake Day”. The recipe debuted in a 1948 edition of Better Homes and Gardens. General Mills marketed it as “the first new cake in 100 years” and it quickly became a sensation. The secret recipe called for vegetable oil instead of butter or shortening, and instructed the baker to beat the egg whites and egg yolks separately.
SATURDAY-
• “Earth Hour”, an effort initiated by the World Wide Fund to raise awareness of the need to reduce energy consumption. Show support by turning off your lights for 1 hour at 8:30pm. For a list of 7 ways you can spend the Hour with friends, family, and community – virtually or in-person, go to: https://www.earthhour.org/
• “Doctors Day”, an observance dating back to 1933, commemorating the first use of anesthetic during surgery by Dr Crawford Long in 1842. He got the idea from observing party-goers high on nitrous oxide and sulfuric ether. (He asked if they would mind if he stole the idea, and they said, “Go ahead, knock yourself out!”)
• “Brothers and Sisters Day!”, a day to let siblings know you care. (Or maybe to add up all the times you got ratted on, had your hair pulled or your dessert stolen … and get even!)
• “Pencil Day”, observed on the anniversary of the ‘Pencil with Attached Eraser’ being patented 166 years ago (1858) by Hyman Lipman. (Thereby giving us all something to chew on…)
• “Take a Walk in the Park Day”, which not only helps you stay healthy and manage weight, it reduces stress (especially if it’s your mother-in-law who’s doing the walking…).
• “World Bipolar Day”, observed on the birth date of artist Vincent Van Gogh, who was posthumously diagnosed as probably having bipolar disorder.
• “National Virtual Vacation Day”. Virtual vacations do not require money, packing, or transcontinental flights. All you need is your imagination and free VR apps or a VR headset. (Which I can’t afford, either!)
• “Grass is Always Browner on the Other Side of the Fence Day”. You’ve heard the phrase, “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” Well, that might not always be the case. Today is for taking stock in things you DO have, whether it be a roof over your head, a family, a job, or something else you’re grateful for.
SUNDAY-
• “Easter”, celebrated by Christians to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans in 30 AD. It is preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. Special church services are held, and in some countries, there are processions.
• “Farm Workers Day”, encouraging us to thank agricultural laborers for their role in growing what we eat. (Remember, today is for farm WORKERS, not their boss, the C-I-E-I-O!)
• “She’s Funny That Way Day”, paying tribute to the female funny bone. How do the women in your life make you laugh? (***Ask for quirky things that funny ladies do***)
• “Dance Marathon Day”. Dance marathons are events where people dance or walk to music for an extended period of time. They started as dance contests in the 1920s and developed into entertainment events during the Great Depression in the 1930s.
• “National Crayon Day”, celebrating the invention of crayons and the joy of coloring. It’s a perfect day to dust off your crayons and spend the day coloring. (Crayons are like M&Ms . . .They taste the same no matter what color they are!)
• “National Prom Day”, a day created to honor friendship, cherish memories, celebrate history, and enjoy the fun and excitement this milestone event brings (***Who has a prom disaster story?***)
• “International Transgender Day of Visibility”, to celebrate transgender people and raise awareness of the discrimination faced by them. It’s also a celebration of their contributions to society.
• “World Backup Day”, a reminder to be prepared against data loss and data theft. Today, back up and better protect your data. (I know some people who have no idea how to back up…their computer OR their car!)
